Use your Apple Watch to control Whirlpool washing machines, dryers and ovens

“Whirlpool’s Wi-Fi-connected ovens, washing machines and dryers will work with Apple Watch so you control your appliances from your wrist, the manufacturer announced today at the CES tech show in Las Vegas,” Ashlee Clark Thompson reports for CNET. “The Whirlpool app for the Apple Watch will debut later this year and will connect to more than 20 connected Whirlpool appliances.”

“This appears to be the first time an appliance manufacturer has coupled its products with the Apple Watch,” Thompson reports.

Here are some of the tasks you’ll be able to complete from the Apple Watch:

• Ovens: Check temperature, change oven settings during a cook cycle
• Washing machines: Change the type of wash cycle when the washer’s in use
• Dryers: Check if a cycle has started, see how much time is remaining on a cycle

  1. Having got quite a decent oven, I know that it’s going to maintain the temperature I set and I also know it reaches that temperature pretty quickly ( 5-10 mins at most, quicker if using fan ). Therefore I don’t see much advantage in being able to remotely check the oven temperature.

On the other hand, if they fitted a camera into the oven and I were able to remotely check exactly how golden brown the stuff in the oven was, that would be massively useful.

    1. Camera could be useful but given the amount of vaporized fats emitted during use, it would be the devil to keep the lens cover clean.
As far as washers are concerned, changing the washing cycle after the detergent has gone in is pretty redundant.

  2. I talked about Apple getting into washing machines and dryers way way back. Nice to see it happen. It is a good idea. Now if they could make a dryer that folds clothes.

Mind you there are those in the textile industry that think that one day our clothes will be printed at home and recycled as part of the 3D printer’s function. Exciting times.

    1. Hi. You said: “Now if they could make a dryer that folds clothes.”
Reminds me of an episode of the original Lost in Space TV show where June Lockhart (the Mom) put the dirty clothes in the washing machine, closed the door, pressed some buttons – and then opened the door and took out the cleaned clothes – already folded!
      Anyone remember seeing that one?

  3. Whirlpool stuff is way too expensive and is no more reliable than what can be bought from others. I have a Samsung Refrigerator that has given great service and an LG washer that replaced a crappy GE Profile that died literally the month after the warranty expired.

LG has had this capability for some time.
