Twitter issues statement regarding world leaders on Twitter

Twitter Inc. on Friday posted the following statement to the official Twitter blog:

There’s been a lot of discussion about political figures and world leaders on Twitter, and we want to share our stance.

Twitter is here to serve and help advance the global, public conversation. Elected world leaders play a critical role in that conversation because of their outsized impact on our society.

Blocking a world leader from Twitter or removing their controversial Tweets would hide important information people should be able to see and debate. It would also not silence that leader, but it would certainly hamper necessary discussion around their words and actions.

We review Tweets by leaders within the political context that defines them, and enforce our rules accordingly. No one person’s account drives Twitter’s growth, or influences these decisions. We work hard to remain unbiased with the public interest in mind.

We are working to make Twitter the best place to see and freely discuss everything that matters. We believe that’s the best way to help our society make progress.

    2. Twitter is an extraordinary tool. You can use it to monitor nonsense if you like. Or you can monitor tweets from people you admire, news sources you trust, and so on. In doing so it becomes the greatest heads-up system on the Internet. People who go around bad mouthing twitter all the time are typically those who look for garbage. Seek and ye shall find.

        4. You do not have to follow PR websites. You can choose to, but do not have to.

          Plenty of experts on many subjects have Twitter accounts and post on their work and stuff they find interesting related to it. Everything from hobbies to highbrow science.

          I have found out that a thoughtful and respectful question- even in opposition- will earn a thoughtful reply. Even Tim Cook reads his Tweets (at least sometimes).

          If I thought Apple would not make it report to Eddie Cue, Twitter would be a good acquisition for Apple. Twitter could use the financial stability and Apple could use the Social Media expertise. Remember Ping?

      2. That’s the right way to look at it: it’s a tool, one with multiple useful functions. I, myself, seldom use my Twitter account but keep it active as a backchannel in case of disruptive world events, just like my survival kit and AARL buddies.

    This exactly is why Trump’s law suit against Michael Wolf’s new Book, and his attempt to stop its publication is so extraordinary. As is his repeated attempts to threaten the free press.

      The Obama Administration prosecuted several. At worst the Trump Administration has mocked the media, and see’n as 95%(according to a Pew Study I believe) of the stories about Trump are negative, he is well within his rights to be nagative right back at them.

The DOJ, led by Eric Holder, somehow labeled Rosen an unindicted co-conspirator in a criminal case, even went so far as to call him a flight risk.         The same DOJ seized two months of phone records from the Associated Press. Close your eyes for a moment and picture the reaction if Attorney General Jeff Sessions had been found to order the same action against the New York Times. If anything but the apocalypse comes to mind, you’re in a small minority.

        The Obama administration rejected more Freedom of Information Act requests than any administration in history. That was after Obama promised the “most transparent” administration in history.

        New York Times reporter James Risen summed it up well when he called the Obama administration “the most anti-press administration since the Nixon administration.”

        “Over the past eight years, the [Obama] administration has prosecuted nine cases involving whistle-blowers and leakers, compared with only three by all previous administrations combined,” Risen wrote for The Times in a Dec. 30, 2016 column. “It has repeatedly used the Espionage Act, a relic of World War I-era red-baiting, not to prosecute spies but to go after government officials who talked to journalists.”

        But for the previous eight years of outright giddiness at the White House Correspondents Dinner, no First Amendment pins were handed out. No speeches were given about threats to press freedom.

          Several people challenged the truth of that claim. your article from a frustrated journalist doesn’t show anything other than federal prosecutors doing their jobs, preventing classified information from being leaked. Same as every administration before it. This NYT reporter’s frustration with getting stories about the CIA published shows that both the Bush administration and from the Obama administration were consistent. He was pressured and warned and challenged in court to reveal who was leaking to him classified CIA intelligence, but the reporter was not prosecuted. “Several” journalists were not prosecuted, they were prevented from leaking antiterrorist intelligence. Countersuits were filed against the administrations claiming freedom of information, which I personally wholeheartedly endorse. However, the courts in the end agreed with the administration and decided that top secret information could not be published on grounds of national security. This is how the system is supposed to work.

          Normally one would think an extreme right winger like Goeb would put national security and anti-terrorism intelligence above politics, but no, Goeb shows how low he can go, attempting to slander Obama, who in my opinion conducted two more terms of the Bush administration’s antiterrorism policy. Not one right winger here uttered a peep when Dubya talked tough on terrorism and overreached all over the place without checks and balances. Who knows what the CIA was doing under Cheney’s meddling interference? No republican wanted to know. Little has changed in that regard in a decade; to hear modern chicken hawks speak, they love military power managed under a single party, like China or Russia. Checks and balances and compromise and representation of the citizen above the party, that’s all inconvenience that the new right wing extremists refuse to allow. They will attack the free press, a right enshrined in the Constitution and essential to democracy, unless that press reveals anything about their party.         3. Thank you for your feedback. My understanding of the US, its politics and laws is thankfully next to nonexistent. That’s probably why I picked up a paragraph from wikipedia. Really should have referenced it. I also understand very little about the mechanics of cars, but I know enough to drive one. Similarly while I may know very little, I do know that there are limitations to free speech. That quality of information can sometimes be more relevant then the quantity of information one has.

          So my point is that there are limits of free speech, a limit that Twitter has decided does not apply to world leaders. Your comment about how little I know about the law is spot on yet I still believe my point is accurate, there are limits to free speech and it appears that Twitter will ignore that for world leaders.

          I’m not saying that any laws have been broken and I’m not a fan when comes to censorship. If the chump wants to talk about the size of his functional button go ahead, I’m sure there are those that want to know if it is an innie our outie, and will be astonished at how much better he can press it than some guy with glasses, but when he is the only one that has that ability, it becomes a special privilege, an inequality.

          That’s what he did for world peace, prior to his becoming president (he was nominated less than two weeks after being in office). He did not win it because of a perceived intention that I know of, he did not win it just for showing up, at least not from the references I have read though certainly that there was a sentiment of hope that he would continue peaceful moves and I did come across one article where there was regret on behalf of the Nobel Secretary, Geir Lundestad.

          Now I’m keeping an open mind so if you have a reference where he was awarded the prize based on mere hope, bring it on. Otherwise, well it looks like you are speculating, distracting and failing to see what he actually won the prize for. What I’m reading is that he won it based on prior work and efforts.

          All that aside, it still does not answer the question I’ve been asking, when was the last time Apple’s home nation was at peace? Now you might view the Nobel Peace Prize as soiled, that’s fine, but what about the innovation of peace itself? I know Apple’s home nation has had very few years of peace, the majority of its history has been at war, that’s easily referenced and that’s very telling. So is peace soiled? Gauging from the actions of the nation, it prefers war over peace. That looks pretty darn clear and any country that is that obsessed with war and acts against humanity the way it has is soiled.

Close down the torture gulags, adhere to the principles of the Declaration of Human Rights, bring those responsible for betraying humanity to justice. It’s not just about name calling, it’s about charting a course for the future, a sustainable course, a humane course.

          That’s why your insight is appreciated, you are spot on, the extremes are screwed up, on both sides but unfortunately that is what is running your country now and has been for some time. It leads to sore losers and poor winners. The name calling can go on, but to me it boils down to this concept, tolerance.

    what’s being overlooked is:

    twitter has a “terms of use” clause (as does practically everything on-line). their statement about world leaders, in essence, means that those rules apply only to some, and not to all. this is dangerous.

    there’s a george orwell quote cited already in this post from “animal farm”. maybe we should all take a step back and think about that for a second. because, essentially, what twitter just said is:

    “all animals are created equal, but some are more equal than others.” (also “animal farm”)

    this is bullshit. either the terms of use apply to all, or they don’t apply AT ALL. citing freedom of speech, or “importance” of the user does not negate this fact.
