Apple developing new original drama ‘Are You Sleeping’ starring Octavia Spencer

“Apple is developing a new original drama series entitled ‘Are You Sleeping,’ starring Octavia Spencer,” Danielle Turchiano reports for Variety. “Created and written by Nichelle Tramble Spellman, the series will be produced by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and Chernin Ent/Endeavor Content.”

“The series is based on Kathleen Barber’s novel of the same name, which gives a glimpse into the obsession with true crime podcasts and ‘challenges its viewers to consider the consequences when the pursuit of justice is placed on a public stage,'” Turchiano reports.

Turchiano reports, “Sarah Koenig, the creator and producer behind true crime podcast ‘Serial,’ will consult on the series.”

MacDailyNews Take: We already can’t wait to see some of these Apple series!

Note: The full article contains some confusion between the Aniston/Whiterspoon vehicle, based on a book by CNN reporter Brian Stelter, Top of the Morning, a series for which Apple outbid Amazon and the reimagining of the anthology series Amazing Stories, executive produced by some guy named Steven Spielberg, which is also being produced for Apple. They are two separate projects.

  1. “Created and written by Nichelle Tramble Spellman” currently developing for Amazon. The talent is in the writing and the author is Producing work for Jeff Bezos & HBO.

Apple’s people just bought the rights to an existing story. 2nd place.

      1. Apple is 2nd place in a lot of ways these days. Apple had oft been 2nd or 3rd to the market, but pressed ahead to eventually lead. MDN’s headline of “can’t wait to see some of the Apple series,” gave me a stomach of uncomfortable uncertainty because unfortunately, Apple’s 2nd to the party m/o doesn’t play out like it used to. Can the change of events be called rare/new? No, there’s a pattern and many & varied examples of an enduring 2nd place. Apple used to make the market and now the market plays Apple. I know, please don’t tell me about the phone.

      1. This the point and reason for “Wait and See” Apple’s bias and politics I suspect will be the hampers them from providing programming people will be interested in viewing. I hope I’m wrong.

  2. Oh boy – Apple TV shows!!!!!
    /s

With every new product category they enter it seems like Apple’s ability to pay adequate attention to the details of it’s products seems to wane even more so sure – let’s add multiple TV shows and movies to the mix. Cook and Ive can pull a Gene Simmons, be starstruck, hang out in Hollywood & let their real business languish.

    1. Steve Jobs famously hung out with lots of ‘A’ list musicians.

There is a lot of scope for people in one industry to bring something meaningful to another. It’s not a though Apple’s software developers and hardware engineers will be redeployed to write scripts and build scenery. Apple is hiring industry-leading specialists to make TV programmes, just as Apple recruits proven specialists to create chips or develop new technology and Apple will be using their expertise in the hope of making the Apple brand more valuable.

  3. Excited? No, more worried. Not b/c they will get distracted in H-Wood, but because they don’t have the DNA to do it well.
Lou Reed in a song asked, “do we really need another billion dollar rocket,” and it frames my thought, “do we need another vapid selection of media?”

  4. Stop chasing movie making. Stop kissing the Dems ass. Stop parading around is asinine causes like the gay movement, BLM and all the others.

Cook. Stop it all and just get out products on time, if at all.

You can’t chew gum and walk. So just chew gum.

Make great products. Ship great products. On time.

Try to at least pretend you are Jobs.
