Amazon to start selling Apple TV

“Amazon said Thursday that it will again be selling Apple TV and Google Chromecast devices, two video-streaming gadgets the e-commerce giant removed from its site two years ago and that compete with its own Fire TV products,” Ben Fox Rubin reports for CNET. “‘I can confirm that we are assorting Apple TV and Chromecast,’ an Amazon spokeswoman told CNET on Thursday, referring to the company’s plans to stock up on the devices. She offered no further statements.”

“Amazon added product listing pages for the Apple TV and two versions of the Apple TV 4K, as well as the Google Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra,” Rubin reports. “The gadgets aren’t available for sale yet, but customers should expect they will be shortly.”

“Amazon removed both competing streaming devices from its online store in late 2015… But last week Apple TV finally added Prime Video, laying the groundwork for an anticipated return of the device to Amazon.com,” Rubin reports. “Separately, Google said last week that it was removing YouTube from the Amazon Echo Show and Fire TV devices. Google claimed a ‘lack of reciprocity’ from Amazon, which stopped selling Chromecast and some Google-owned Nest products on its site. Amazon’s move to start selling Chromecast again can be seen as an olive branch offered to Google in the hope of bringing YouTube back to Amazon’s devices.”

MacDailyNews Take: Hopefully Apple TV units will be ready for sale at Amazon in time for Christmas delivery, but, even if not, better late than never!

  1. It’s soon to be reported that Amazon will also be redesigning the Apple TV and submitting for Apple’s approval early 2018. Amazon had hoped to sell an updated Apple TV on amazon.com sooner but tired of Apple‘s lack of progress with the product, so took the redesign project upon themselves.

    1. Not clear what you are saying here it’s surely their Prime app you are referring to the poor design of which is entirely down to their own unwillingness to bother to do a proper job, unlike Netflix for example. And I don’t expect Apple to be allowing them to redesign the AppleTV somehow. Unless you were being ironic in some way of course.

  2. I love my 4K Apple TV, especially for watching Prime video in 4K Dolby HDR. The picture is signifitantly better than either the built in Amazon Prime app on my LG OLED65E7 or the Amazon Fire TV box. Significantly better.

Just not that crazy about the remote control.
