Firmware update 7.6.9 improves the security of your base station and is recommended for all Apple 802.11n Wi-Fi base stations including AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule.

I’d like to celebrate, but I’m sad that Apple dropped the router lineup.
My AirPort Extreme has worked flawlessly for a number of years now. I’ve only had to reboot it for firmware updates.

There no evidence that Apple has “dropped” the airport lineup. They’re still making them, and you can still buy them new. They haven’t updated them in a while, and I’d like an airport express refresh, but the AirPort Extreme from 2013 still performs better than all of its competitors in the space. It never needs restarted unless there’s a firmware update, runs 24/7 without maintaince, and provides maximum throughout for every device connected, they cover the whole house, and you can use them as a “mesh” network very easily. Just because something hasn’t been updated doesn’t mean it’s bad, or being “dropped”. Unlike the display which they officially said they’d be discontinuing, no such language has come for the airport line. It was way ahead when it was released 4 years ago, and other companies are now somewhat catching up but the reliability still isn’t there, so there’s no need for Apple to release a new one especially since the “wave 2” AC devices don’t perform much better. My guess is that the next AirPort Extreme will have 802.11 AX which has entered the draft stage. Then the express will get AC.
Wow Emperor, I didn’t know Apple was still making Airport Base Stations, as I still call them having bought the very first one Apple made. Think I’ll go to Apple Store right now and buy another one. My current AirPort Extreme is only the n version.

Bull. The Airport is blown away by newer routers. Apple reduced the headcount in all Mac accessories groups and it shows. Airport is 4 years old and is far from state of the art.
Don’t take my word for it. Buy a Synology router or an Orbi or whatever. Better control apps, better performance, and/or lower prices than Apple.
Apple is being led by a group of has-been coattail execs who are chasing iPhone and app profits a the detriment of everything else that made Apple a cohesive Personal computing platform. They are so eager to push you into subscriptions that they are willing letting critically important products die on the vine. The fact that you can find a few dusty Airport boxes in the back of your local Apple store underneath the glitter iPhone cases, next to the huge overpriced adapter department, only underscores how out of touch Apple’s leadership team is.
Question to the insiders : What networking do you have in your new donut office? Why isn’t it Apple hardware?
As far as using the other products, I have used the eero, the orbi, and the amplifi HD. None of them perform as well, none. The orbi had to be rebooted at minimum once a week once it’s cache got full, which is the same problem all netgear routers have, also can only connect at 866mbps, even though my MacBook Pro has a 1.33gbps chip in it, the airport DOES deliver that link speed, the orbi is also 399. The eero doesn’t have th es se management capabilities and isn’t as fast, my broadband connection is 550down/550up, and the eero could only broadcast about 280mbps even when devices were connected at full link speed, also the coverage wasn’t very good. The amplifi HD came the closest in performance, being able to broadcast 490/490 at full link speed, but again the coverage wasn’t the same and it also needed rebooted more than it should. The airport network in my he’s consistently delivers almost full up and down speeds (520/520), and it works all over my house with 20 devices connected at any given time at full link speed… I achevé yet to find about her wireless product that performs as reliably or as well, sometimes you don’t update something because you don’t have to. Change for change sake is silly, unless it makes it better. All of those products are more expensive or the same as the AirPort Extreme and they don’t perform as well, I swallowed this line also last year and went through all of these different products but discovered that I already had a better product. People got really excited because they’ve been using a bunch of truly shitty wireless access points and these new ones are better than the old blue boxes, but not the airport.

Seems like a pretty bad guess, seeing there hasn’t been a router development team for over a year now.

Recently bought an eero after having been on Airport Base Stations since jump street. The eero does not have the range of my Airport Extreme, has no web interface and no Macintosh app for management of setup- like Tim Cook it is all iOS all the time.
It makes no sense that a company with the resources of Apple could not continue development of the product.
So what do you think of the eero compared to the extreme? Was it worth making the switch? I have been considering it, but my extreme works OK and unless it is a ground breaking performance switch, not sure if it is worth it or not.
Stable and fast, not as much range, no Mac app and no web interface (iOS only). Satellite units do not hVe outputs like Airport Express.
As a router it seems OK- less than Apple’s product despite the hefty price tag. Not happy with the lack of outputs on the satellite units and lack of Mac support.
If you are someone who lives on your iPhone or iPad you will probably like it. If you want an App so you can set up and manage the thing, you might be less inclined.
Were Apple continuing to develop the Airport line I would never have bought it.
Let others install this latest Apple update first. Wouldn’t want to take your network down, now would ya?
had they stuck with the router game it would have been a terrific product line to integrate apple into my iHome; too bad they pissed away the home networking market too; Apple have no game
I suppose asking for Airplay 2 support on Airport Express would be asking too much.
How does one install it? The link above simply leads to an “We’re sorry” page from Apple.
