KGI’s Ming-Chi Kuo ups his outlook for Apple’s iPhone X

“Just over a month ago KGI’s Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, wrote in a report picked up by MacRumors that while the company’s production problems with the iPhone X were getting resolved that he believed that there would only be 2 to 3 million units to be shipped into the distribution channel ahead of its launch,” Chuck Jones writes for Forbes. “He cut his forecast from 30 to 35 million X’s in the December quarter down to 25-30 million. And he wrote that shipments would ‘“pick up markedly’ in the March quarter.”

“There have been a number of data points indicating that the iPhone X’s demand has been at least solid if not strong with the wild card being that its lead-time has fallen to 1 to 2 weeks very quickly,” Jones writes. “Overall he believes that the X’s demand is strong and that its March quarter shipments should be flat to slightly lower than the December quarters. Since Apple doesn’t break out unit sales by model and that the iPhone’s March quarter unit sales have been down by 18% (post iPhone 6 launch), 32% and 35% the past two years, respectively, I believe it could be hard for them to be flat since the X’s lead-time is down to 1 to 2 weeks and production seems to be ramping well.”

MacDailyNews Take: Kuo estimates the current iPhone X production levels are between 440,000 and 550,000 units per day!

If March quarter iPhone X sales can match holiday quarter sales, it would be amazing and an absolutely staggering number of units would have been moved during the early months of the iPhone X revolution!

  1. Nope. I have my iPhone X, I do love it. The screen is amazing and the Face ID works like a champ but the phone is expensive. And while it is well worth it to me demand will drop as the market for folks willing to pay more shrinks. Uneducated buyers will pass on considering just because of the price.

    1. So “uneducated” people don’t spend $1400 on an iPhone? The opposite makes more sense to me. The X is a wonder of technology, but it is not a game changer yet, AR apps don’t exist to make it a must-have. I have one waiting for me in the US, but I may well return it and save the $1250 (Applecare would be an extra $150).

The X doesn’t do anything extraordinarily different or better than my 6+ does. The UI is a step back in some respects. Once I spend some time with it I’ll judge whether the tradeoffs are worth it. My first impression at the store was disappointment that the screen is smaller than my 3-year-old phone, with smaller text and images on websites. With an “X-plus” rumored for next year, I may hold off, or at least sell my X and upgrade then.

  2. Yes the phone is expensive. The tech is awesome. Remember though that through sales/trade-ins the initial cost of the iPhone X can be reduced AND; the monthly payments Zero interest options are also popular for those who don’t want to pay cash up front…….

  3. I was so excited before the X’s release, but once in store using
one I was underwhelmed! Maybe if the 64gb was $850 and the
256gb was $999. Really had hoped they’d perfect the embedded fingerprint scanner, maybe next time around. For now I’ll keep my iphone 6 128gb with headphone jack that i listen to music on everyday! And with the new battery it’s working like a champ!
