Analyst: Apple’s 6.5-inch ‘iPhone XIs Plus’ to be a boon to OLED

“Although supplies are still tight for Apple’s iPhone X, it’s not too soon to start thinking about 2020, writes Chuljoong Kim of Jefferies & Co., who opines that by that time, Apple will be offering what might be called an ‘iPhone XI,’ in an ‘S’ version, with three sizes, ranging up to as big as a 6.5-inch display,” Tiernan Ray writes for Barron’s.

“That should be a boon to the entire supply chain for organic light-emitting diode, or OLED, technology for displays, including LG Electronics (LPL), which is likely to see its shares ‘re-rated as an OLED company,”’ he writes,” Ray reports. “Broadly speaking, iPhone X, the first Apple phone with an OLED-based display, is helping further proliferate the technology… ‘Smartphone models featuring flexible OLED will likely increase sharply thanks to the positive market response to the iPhone X,’ [Kim writes].”

Ray reports, “Among other things, Chuljoong claims OLED-based screens will generally expand, from the current 5.85-inch iPhone X, for example, to a 6.5-inch beast he’s referring to as the ‘iPhone XIs Plus.'”

MacDailyNews Take: We expect Apple will have further cleaned up iPhone naming by then.

Just name ’em like you do MacBook Pros, with the screen size and the year.

  1. You can’t name iPhones by year since they will continue to sell the same model at a discount in future years. Trying to sell an iPhone 2017 in 2020 probably won’t work well.
I can see iPhone 9’s being sold next year as successors to the 8’s. Kinda wonder what the naming on the iPhone X family will be going forward. Series 2, series 3, etc…?

    1. Indeed just follow the watch naming. I think there will be a 9 next year to finish off the present mid range sequence thereafter all new phones will I think be based on X tech with 8 and 9 gradually fading out over the years. The only fly there maybe if the 8 sales don’t really impress enough a 9 if it launches at all might be a very minor update. The SE if rumours are correct and series 2 arrives early 18 then that new naming protocol will be revealed therein while I doubt it’s future thereafter, some two years down the line is yet set in stone.

    2. Agree with MDN. The only smart way to go is screen size and year.

Even if the phone design does not change as you suggest in later years, it is still manufactured in those later years and the name would be accurate …

    1. Certainly Apple can come up a more elegant solution than the obtrusive notch. As far as what they call it, name and year manufactured, just like motor vehicles, will clear up the confusion for everyone …

  2. “Smartphone models featuring flexible OLED will likely increase sharply thanks to the positive market response to the iPhone X…”

So I can expect my EFC Global any day now?
