Apple’s services are like lousy sex

“Apple’s services are often very misunderstood,” John Kirk writes for Tech.pinions.

“Many tech observers do not grasp the role that services do and should play at Apple,” Kirk writes. “Some contend that Apple’s services are awful and that Apple is losing out to Google’s services. Others point out how rapidly Apple’s service revenues have been rising and contend that Apple is fast becoming a services-first company. In my opinion, both views are wrong. Or perhaps it would be more accurate to say that both views are incomplete.”

“There is a fundamental difference between the way Google approaches services and the way Apple approaches services. Google uses services to attract customers and to keep them. Apple uses services to keep existing customers from leaving. When it comes to services, Google is like a mistress and Apple is more like a spouse,” Kirk writes. “(I know this analogy is both salacious and sexist. Please understand that I use it because I think it is both informative and illustrative. No aspersions or moral implications are intended.)”

“Apple’s services are like lousy sex,” Kirk writes. “Their services may not be great, but they’re still pretty damn good.”

  1. iCloud still sucks. If I want to stream a video from iCloud, the dumb thing has to be downloaded to my iDevice and then I can watch it.

OneDrive and Dropbox allows me to simply stream it without having to download it to my iDevice.

    Nice and simple.

I really don’t understand how a multi billion dollar company still makes cloud services inferior to smaller companies.

    1. You’re completely mistaken about iCloud.

The iOS TV app lets you directly stream iTunes video purchases as well as video from other streaming providers including Showtime and HBO Now.

Apple Music and iTunes Match let you stream musics and music videos directly to your device as well.

Lastly, the iOS Files app, lets you stream any supported media file directly to your device

Learn to use your tools before b*tching about them.

    2. it’s hard to know where you’re going with your head up your… ahem, wtf is wrong with apple these days?!? nice campus, great phone but pretty much everything else is crapping the proverbial bed

  2. The analogy is not quite right.

Apple’s services are like sex, in a good marriage: comfortable, familiar and great. Wanting to try other services is like the temptation of an affair: the desire for something new and exciting.

It’s good to remember that most of those who leave a good marriage for an exciting affair end up wrecking their lives.

  3. And using services from both is analogous to polyamory (aka “ethical non-monogamy”): when one service (partner) doesn’t meet a particular need, you find another to fulfill it.

  4. I tend to find Google services a mixed bag, some very good some aweful and most certainly start out at best annoying before gradually improving over some considerable time, yet don’t however seem to be questioned objectively at all.

    1. Google Services. You mean those apps where you freely serve Google all your data in exchange for the illusion of convenience, when in reality everything Google offers can be acquired elsewhere.

  5. Never read something more illustrative of the author’s own particular life via metaphor. I’m sure they even thought it was incredibly accurate because to them, it is. But a good metaphor meant to cut to the core of clarity ought not be quite so subjective.
