Hey, Apple, can we have a ‘Guest Mode’ in iOS 12?

“Face ID and Touch ID have made it much easier to lock down iPhone X and previous iPhones and iPads so we’re the only ones who can access our data. Face ID also — finally! — gives me the ability to lock down iCloud Keychain items so that I have to authenticate in apps and on the web before it will autofill my passwords and credit card information,” Rene Ritchie writes for iMore. “That way, if I hand a friend, colleague, or stranger-in-need my device to quickly make an emergency call or look up something critical on the web, I don’t have to worry about them placing orders on my dime.”

“But there’s more on my iPhone and iPad than just my Keychain. There are my emails and messages, photos and videos, calendar and contacts,” Ritchie writes. “Apple provided the ability to lock Notes over a year ago but, since then, hasn’t extended the functionality to any additional apps. It makes it downright hard to be paranoid.”

“I’m hoping Apple can address even more of my concerns in the next iPhone and iPad software update, iOS 12,” Ritchie writes. “Apple could add the option to require Face ID or Touch ID to launch every app. Settings could offer a Secure toggle that engages the authentication system for built-in apps the way password managers and banking apps already do for third-party apps. People and institutions highly vested in security would no doubt love that, but it would add both complexity and an excessive amount of overhead. A Guest Mode would be a simpler, more elegant solution.”

MacDailyNews Take: Rene wants a “Guest Mode” that would allow you hand your iPhone or iPad to someone so they could place a call or look something up on the web without also giving them access to all of your data.

We think that’s an excellent idea! Do you?

    1. There is already a setting to disable caller-id (shows up remote as “unknown” or something) so it seems like it’d be trivial to have that setting always on for any calls made when the phone was in guest mode.

  1. I think it would be easier to add a toggle to require authentication on certain apps. There’s only a few apps I wouldn’t want a friend to open without my authentication, mail, photos, tinder…

        1. You’re typing far slower than the average human, then.

Even with 0.5 sec between key presses, the second “+” key is missed and it becomes 1+11. A calculator that forces you to wait almost 1 second between keypresses is not fit for use in any way, shape or form.

      1. You kept posting this 1+1+1=12 thing like it was some kind of mathematical flaw in Calculator when, in fact, it is the lag in the Calculator I/O and processing that will interpret 1+1+1 as 1+11 unless you enter it slowly.

That is a poor situation and it should be fixed. But it is not nearly the earthshattering deal that you make it out to be. Why are you so bent out of shape over this issue? Did you lose you job because of it?

Interestingly, the Mac version of Calculator (which looks basically the same) does not care how fast you enter the numbers. I typed faster than the graphics could display the numbers and the total was always correct at the end of the series.

Anyway, now I can ignore your posts on this subject.

        1. You think I don’t know it’s a UI problem and not a mathematical one? Did I *actually* have to spell it out for your pedantic self?

Good of you to ignore a problem with the UI. You know, the user interface, that Apple’s supposed to be the best at?

Bury your head in the sand like a Windows or Android sufferer. Apple fans like myself demand way better.

        2. What makes your comment even more sad is that I *already* mentioned it was a UI lag issue with the “+” and other operator keys almost 5 hours before you went on your rant.

No, people aren’t going to die and your security won’t be compromised because of this bug. But it’s still a showcase for how Apple is getting the little things *wrong* and there’s no excuse for it, and you should be pressing Apple for not giving Windows and Android users more reasons for mocking them and us.

  2. To be honest I have never had anyone ask me to use my phone. If someone needs to make an emergency call to family etc, then they can either borrow my phone or I can place the call for them.

  3. I’d love a guest mode for things like iPads that are used as communal devices around the house. You wouldn’t maybe want to set them up with email accounts etc, but they could be used for controlling Apple TV, HomeKit, general browsing, and so on.

On a separate note I’d also love to be able to limit usage of homekit to certain devices or rooms. I’ve got various devices that I don’t want visitors/family messing with, or lights I don’t want them accidentally turning on as they play around with it.

  4. A guest mode would be great. I think there should be multiple modes. For example, a mode for work (could be geo-located) so company owned apps and configurations/settings could only be seen when at work (for those whose work is tied to locations). Another useful mode would be a “with friends and family” or “with my children” mode that could turn off all but emergency notifications and phone calls, etc…

  5. I’d love to be able to create a second user account on my work provided iPhone. As it is, I don’t want to use my own personal Apple ID on it, but this limits my ability to use my Apple Music, view my iCloud photos, access my personal contacts list etc.

It would be nice to be able to add this stuff and then delete the account if I ever give the phone back.

On another note. I don’t want to be looking at my “work account” on weekends. As it is, I carry my own personal iPhone on evenings and weekends, just so I can disconnect from work.
