Canalys estimates Apple shipped 3.9 million Apple Watch units in Q317, despite strong demand outstripping supply

Canalys estimates market-leading Apple shipped 3.9 million Apple Watch units in calendar third quarter 2017. Apple posted its strongest quarter so far in 2017, thanks to the release of the Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS) and Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular).

Samsung was a distant second, shipping a mere 500,000 Samsung Gear S3 units during the quarter, according to Canalys’ estimates, while third place Huawei shipped a paltry 200,000 during the quarter.

“Strong demand for the LTE-enabled Apple Watch Series 3 has dispelled service providers’ doubts about the cellular smartwatch not appealing to customers,” said Canalys Analyst Jason Low, in a statement. “Despite strong shipments, the Apple Watch Series 3 did not reach its full potential in Q3. It suffered limited availability as demand outstripped supply in major markets. Service providers had underestimated demand for the new Apple Watch. “In China, customers with high expectations are being driven away by the service disruption fiasco in the country. Besides bringing in more stock, operators should work on improving their remote service provisioning systems to cater for the expected higher demand in Q4,” said Low.

According to Canalys estimates, 800,000 Apple Watch units shipped in Q3 were cellular-enabled. In the quarter, Apple shipped one Apple Watch for every seven iPhone 7/8 series smartphones shipped. Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) alone, despite constrained supply, outsold Samsung and Huawei smartwatches combined.

    1. I just bought the Gold Aluminum 42mm Pink Sand Loop Series 3 GPS + Cellular arrives Thursday. Advancing from the original Series 0 Space Gray Sport on launch day April 2015. Why? 16GB Storage & Speed-NOT the LTE part.

But the real reason is that Stanford Medical Research won’t let Original Series 0 WATCH owners in their new Apple Heart Study. Series 1 or later is required. Seems to me the cost of the new WATCH is worth the price of admission into the study which is FREE. Thank you Apple & Stanford for doing this important work. Just in time for me finishing my 71st year when heart problems become more common.

  1. I upgraded from a stainless steel series 0 to a stainless steel series 3 LTE. What a difference. I got black this time thinking I could switch to the chrome when I wanted a different look on a particular occasion. Not a chance. I could not give up the improvements even for an evening. I will be giving the series 0 to a relative soon.

  2. At 71 I’m the oldest of my siblings and significant others (although they are close in age). This year I’m giving Apple Watch 3s w/ cellular as Christmas gifts (9 of them).

Although not where they will be in the future, Apple Watch medical capabilities will be a boon to my extended family.

    1. I complete 71 years next month. I’m getting my Series 3 GTE+LTE (from April ‘15 Series 0) Thursday specifically to be able to join in the Apple Heart Study at Stanford Medical Center. Series 0 WATCH owners are not allowed in the study. Make sure you and all your relatives join in the study. Admission is FREE.
