Apple has the world’s two top-selling smartphones, but neither is the iPhone 8

“According to a report from the new research firm Canalys, the iPhone continues to be the top-selling phone with 46.7 million units sold in the third quarter of 2017,” Steven Winkelman reports for Digital Trends. “The iPhone 7 and iPhone 6S sold particularly strongly during the quarter, placing them at the number one and two spots for overall phone sales in the quarter.”

“The iPhone 7 saw the strongest sales of any mobile device with 13 million unit sold in the third quarter,” Winkelman reports. “Following in a distant second place was the iPhone 6S, first released in 2015, with 7.9 million units sold.”

“Sales for the new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus were at 11.8 million units combined,” Winkelman reports. “Although sales of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus were strong, they lagged significantly when compared with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus when they were released year-ago quarter.”

  1. I got the iPhone 7 as well. There isn’t a reason to get the 8, and as a blind person, neither the 10 either. Devin Prater Assistive Technology Instructor in Training JAWS, Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, and Powerpoint certified by World Services for the Blind

  2. One of the dumbest pieces of clickbait, ever. Any idiot would know that the iPhone X makes it impossible for the iPhone 8 to hit the iPhone 7’s release numbers. Additionally, the whole idea of knowing these numbers are correct is pure speculation. Must be a slow day.

    1. “Must be a slow day.”

Today is Veterans Day observed in the U.S.A.

Veterans Day is officially on November 11. If Veterans Day falls on a Saturday, it is observed on Friday, November 10.

  3. It’s such a brilliant strategy. Apple doesn’t get enough credit for this.

While Samsung and others direct enormous engineering resources and build production capacity specifically to make a large range of cheap phones, Apple concentrates on engineering the best, and sells older models (from established production lines) as their low-cost offering.

Their products, and their investment in production lines, provide a very long tail.

  4. 1.) Never buy the first generation Apple product because in a year they will put out the 2nd gen at twice the speed and get all the bugs worked out.

2.) The only reason I’m not buying an iPhone 8S is because my 6S+ is flawless. There’s no reason for me to upgrade.
