“Apple Inc sees its mobile devices as a major platform for artificial intelligence in the future, Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams said on Monday,” Jess Macy Yu reports for Reuters. “Later this week, Apple is set to begin taking pre-orders for its new smartphone, the iPhone X – which starts at $999 and uses artificial intelligence (AI) features embedded in the company’s latest A11 chips.”
“‘We think that the frameworks that we’ve got, the ‘neural engines’ we’ve put in the phone, in the watch … we do view that as a huge piece of the future, we believe these frameworks will allow developers to create apps that will do more and more in this space, so we think the phone is a major platform,’ Williams said,” Yu reports. “He was speaking at top chip manufacturer Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s 30th anniversary celebration in Taipei, which was attended by global tech executives.”
“‘I think we’re at an inflection point, with on-device computing, coupled with the potential of AI, to really change the world,’ he said,” Yu reports. “He said AI could be used to change the way healthcare is delivered, an industry he sees as ‘ripe’ for change.”

Apple sees iOS as platform for everything.
And I think in this simple statement we see why Siri has somewhat lagged in recent times. I know I keep saying it but they do love to move ahead in waves and can neglect far too much in between those waves though I guess they feel for the greater good. In their mind Siri was on a plateau that can only really move ahead in sync with other (no doubt big as well as many little) developments in the Apple ecosystem. Thus instead of iteration advances they wait till all the planets align to move ahead in a way they can make a big thing of. Their problem here and indeed in other areas like AppleTV in recent years the opposition have moved rather quicker than they expected so creating an unexpected gap in relative abilities even if some is more perceived than real. So the question is having been written off in AR and then arguably leapfrogged the opposition and certainly in breadth how long do we have to wait for Siri and their AI ideas to come to fruition? Sooner rather than later I hope.
What is the ‘AI’ you speak of? There is NONE of it in sight. To pretend that what we currently have is artificial ‘intelligence’ is beyond stretching the truth. It’s moronic. (O_o)
