“Apple has reportedly started working on a foldable iPhone with LG Display, not Samsung Display — the sole OLED supplier — possibly due to concerns over tech leaks to its archrival Samsung Electronics,” Lee Ji-yoon reports for The Investor.
“According to The Bell on Oct. 11, LG Display recently created a task force to develop a foldable OLED screen for the new iPhone model, while its parts-making sister firm LG Innotek has also setup a team dedicated to developing the rigid flexible printed circuit board, more widely called RFPCB,” Lee reports. “Citing unnamed industry sources, the report said, the panel production could start from 2020, which means Apple could delay its phone launch compared to Samsung’s first foldable phone that is likely to debut next year.”

Would Samsung leak info to Samsung? Perish forbid!
What we can be sure of is that Samsung will rush a poorly thought out version to market in order to be “first.” Apple will take the time to do it right.
and goofy cheap short sighted andriod buyers will believe their fantasy of cheaper and better until it isn’t
Or until it explodes violently in their pocket, pouch or purse.

If there’s one manufacturer that I’ll never buy from then it has to be Samsung. Faulty phones, washing machines and a company philosophy that is based on stealing from other companies. Unbelievable!
Good thing they got this leak under control.
Wait, what?
Right?!
I’m sure LG doesn’t make any phones
😱
I imagined a foldable iPhone way back in 2007. I figured two 3.5″ screens could be unfolded to make a 5″ screen.
would love to see foldable macbook with totally customizable keyboard / tool bar side of clamshell
I think you mean a 7″ screen, right? Unless you meant to say two 2.5″ screens.
I think I’ll stick with a single solid slab. I honestly don’t think I’m interested in any folding device to carry around in terms of a smartphone. Of course, I’d have to see how this folding is accomplished to pass any judgment on it. As an average consumer, I can’t see the need for a much larger display than what is being used today.
Again, with the foldable display tech, we’re likely going to see another price jump for flagship smartphones. It’s a never-ending cycle. I’m not against the advancement of tech, so let the games and whining begin. All I want at this point is greater battery life.
Folding screens have been talked about for a number of years and while I can understand how a folding display might function, I’m not clear about how effectively a folding touch display might work.
It would be unacceptable for the ‘hinge’ line of the touch screen to respond in any way differently to the rest of the screen. I’m not saying it’s impossible – I’m just curious about exactly how it’s going to work as it’s not something that I’ve noticed any mention of when people have written about them.
