Gizmodo reviews Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular): ‘The first smartwatch actually worth buying’

“The Apple Watch Series 3 is crazy expensive for a smartwatch — $100 more than its closest competitors. Many of the third party apps are still slow enough to drive sane people to the brink. It also only lasts a day on a charge,” Alex Cranz writes for Gizmodo. “I should hate this watch and everything it stands for, but after three weeks of wearing it, I’m so enamored I’m actually encouraging others to buy this silly little square. The Apple Watch Series 3 is the first smartwatch actually worth buying.”

MacDailyNews Take: That’s hyperbole. We wouldn’t trade our experiences with the original Apple Watch or the next-gen Series 2 and the various watchOS versions for anything. You only get one chance to experience an Apple product grow from planting to fruition. There was a lot that Apple and we users learned about what works and what doesn’t over that time. Every Apple Watch iteration was worth buying.

“This is connectivity implemented right, and when the Series 3 works as Apple intends, it shows off exactly what a wearable should be,” Cranz writes. “While there have been many reports of connectivity issues with the Apple Watch, I had zero issues signing in and getting my Series 3 connected to my phone plan. It took two minutes and was so easy I was concerned I’d screwed everything up.”

“I lasted on just the watch for the whole day and felt like I was living in some cool dream. Sure the Jabra headphones I was using had a bad microphone so people would hang up on me. (The AirPods work better for phone calls, but I’m not a big fan of how they sit in my ears.) My phone was gone the entire time,” Cranz writes. “I was checking the weather, picking up stories from AP News, and texting like a fiend, all from a watch.”

    1. The is some work and added cost for mobile providers to service for a second device using a number already assigned to a phone. So I’m okay with them charging something. But ATT and the like are going to have to provide an audited accounting that justifies $10/month before I ever believe that they aren’t simply gouging us. I can only hope that Watch 3+ buyers like me won’t buy into the cell service. Price should come down if the percentage of 3+ watch owners choosing to go without without LTE service stays high.

      1. $3 a month, maybe $5, I’m ok with, but not $240 for two years.

I’m still wearing my Series 0 AW, and if it had had LTE, I’d be approaching $300 AT&T tax, almost the cost of the watch itself!

        AT&T can go bugger off!

  1. A silly turn of phrase to use when “encouraging” others to get one. I don’t want to spend a few hundi for a SLS. Despite the criticism of craft, I do share the ill-fit of Apple’s Ear-Pods and Buds. I just purchased a pair of bluetooth Anker buds. Included with the device were 3 different sets of in-ear buds and 3 sets of ear hooks. Anker enabled me to find a great fit. I wish Apple would recognize they’re not a one-size-fits-all product.esp considering the price.

  2. Love my series 3 cellular. Very impressed. And I agree that it’s the first true Apple Watch worth getting. I can’t wait to see what series 4 and beyond has to offer.
Anyone interested in getting a deal on the older model should absolutely not chase good hard earned money on the older models. You’ll absolutely instantly regret it.

  3. Would like to know what plan’s being used – took 6 hours w ATT to setup, up to a top tech who said “we’re not ready for this”
Also discovered to send/receive SMS (green) messages, phone doesn’t have to be with you but must be on and connected to Internet.

  4. Have a Series 3 LTE Apple Watch on my wrist right now. I love it but think it is about 50-100 over-priced. The charge for the Ceramic models is just crazy.

As to the wireless carriers pricing, the watch should not be charged extra for at all. Imagine if Comcast or Charter charged you extra for each internet connected device at home after you paid for your bucket of data. It’s just greed.
