“Shares of Apple Inc. edged lower premarket Friday, after another report of a problem with an iPhone 8 Plus,” Ciara Linnane reports for MarketWatch.
“Chinese state media reported that a device delivered there had split open, 9to5Mac reported, reigniting concerns about the battery,” Linnane reports. “Earlier this week, a customer from Taiwan and another from Japane reportedly sent pictures to Apple showing their phones split open, which was thought to be caused by the battery swelling due to gases inside the device.”

“Via ThePaper.cn, Liu reportedly took delivery of an iPhone 8 Plus on Thursday only to find that its case was split as soon as he opened up the packaging,” Benjamin Mayo reports for 9to5Mac. “The front screen piece is clearly bent, leaving the device in a non-functional state with the internal components partly exposed.”
“Again unconfirmed, but it is believed that an expansion of the internal battery is causing the devices to split open. Due to the minute tolerances of phones, it only takes a small increase in the size of the component to cause the iPhone to separate,” Mayo reports. “Although details remain murky, it does not appear that any of these devices are delivered in a dangerous condition (it’s not like the battery is about to combust) but it does cause inconvenience and create some bad PR for Apple.”

Keep in mind that the failure rate is unknown. With millions of units already shipped to happy customers and only a handful of reports of battery swelling, the rate could be normal – or even better than normal – but Apple will, of course, being Apple, receive more than its fair share of reporting on this issue.

Now this. Making excuses for Apple. We are literally at the point of Samsung’s battery issue in terms of reports, and somehow there’s nothing to see here.
I’m not saying this isn’t normal and part of acceptable failure rates, but there is a pattern emerging and enough reports now that it’s worth looking into.
I can only guess if this is a problem why it’s a problem: Apple is using glass, which may not dissipate heat as well as aluminum; Apple may have changed the configuration of the internals, thereby causing a fault; the wireless charging now built into the iPhone may also have something to do with this.
The difference is the phones are not exploding and putting lives and planes in danger like Samsplodes did. You can bet the new iPhones are tested to death before release but you are still subject to the vagaries and maintained quality levels of component suppliers per Apple spec. I have a hunch there’s not much wiggle room for error.
What brand of battery does Apple use and how do you know it’s failing wouldn’t hurt someone?

Pattern? Glad you’ve figured it out. Sell that information to Apple and make yourself a bundle of money. Now, getting back to reality, there are certainly enough reports to warrant further investigation…which I’m sure Apple is doing. I don’t see MDN making excuses on the face of their coments here.

Apple receiving more than it’s share of media coverage for every little thing. Factual – Apple has always received lots of scrutiny, but rarely gets the benefit of the doubt treatment that Microsoft, Samsung and Google get.
My friend’s father-in-law got an 8 and uses wireless charging. My friend felt the phone during the charging process and he said it was nearly painfully hot. Something sounds a bit odd there. Maybe the supposedly mis-alignment of the phone on the charger? Still, that didn’t seem like a normal phenomenon (Warm, maybe. Very hot, no)
Was holding out for a X, now I don’t know. Really want a Note 8, still using a 6S Plus. I’m just fed up with Cook’s fuckups and his greed. He’s ruining Apple.
So get a Note 8 and depart these shores fake faux Fandroid Troll. Samsung is already genuinely self-ruining and a major fuck-up on a fragmented and rabidly data-mined ecosystem so you should feel more at home and comfortable there.
Cook just needs to put the dual lens camera in the normal sized iPhone already. We know it fits because it fits in the iPhone X. Their rationale for putting it in the larger phone was because they couldn’t squeeze it in the smaller. Now, it’s turned into we won’t squeeze it into the smaller without making you pay a premium. There should be no difference in the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus except the screen size. I shouldn’t be subjected to a “crappier” camera just because I don’t have Andre the Giant’s hands.
More than Samsung’s wanebe phones? No. There is no proof.
Apple should step up and replace the brand new iPhone with the bulging screen of the Chinese man who bought his iPhone elsewhere. Will help foster good will.
I’ll say it again. Apple has been dying a slow death since Steve died. No innovation, quality is shittier, and incremental releases that don’t do shit for the consumer. And now they can’t say a frigging thing about Samsung’s screw-ups. Look, I love Apple products, but my patience is wearing thin. I’m waiting for the iPhone X, but waiting 6 months to make sure the kinks are worked out (heck, I’d be waiting at least that long anyway).
