“Microsoft will quit its loss-making Surface hardware business by 2019, according to execs from PC manufacturers and a channel watcher,” Paul Kunert reports for The Register.
“Talking at the tenth Canalys Channels Forum in Venice, Canalys CEO Steve Brazier said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella would exit the product line because he is a ‘software guy, a cloud guy’ and pointed to the demise of the smartphone line,” Kunert reports. “He added: ‘The Surface performance is choppy; there are good quarters and bad quarters, overall they are not making money. It doesn’t make sense for them to be in this business.'”
“‘When the capital expenditure challenge that Satya Nadella has taken Microsoft down becomes visible to Wall Street, everyone will ask him ‘Why have you gone to a low margin business?” Microsoft will have a lot of cost-cutting to do, Brazier claimed, and ‘Surface will be the first target,’ Kunert reports. “Also commenting on the forecast demise of Surface at the Canalys event, Gianfranco Lanci, corporate president and chief operating officer at Lenovo, said he believed Microsoft may pull the plug on its PC hardware unit before 2019. ‘It might be earlier,’ he told Brazier on stage.”

Microsoft suffers from delusions of grandeur. They think they matter and that people will buy their pretend iPad over other pretend iPads because it’s from Microsoft. Microsoft does not matter. Microsoft no longer has the power to sell superfluous products. The world already has iPad. The thinking world finally woke up and moved on from Microsoft’s soul-sapping dreck. That clueless Microsoft haven’t figured this out years ago (Zune, Kin, how many total face-plants do they need?) is illustrative of the depths of their delusions.

but I am simply amazed with MS’ continued product failures. Maybe I’m naive to think there’s got to be someone, somewhere, sometime with product savvy at MS? After all, the sweating, jumping and frenetic bald man is gone and Bill is saving the world.
MS gets some guy in who says “We’ll get 10% market share 2 years after shipping (Zune or Surface or SurfacePro or phone) and then when it doesn’t happen … Zuned again!
I often suspected that the Microsoft thought process went along these lines …

No love lost for MS, but weak competition is bad for Apple and its customers.
That’s a myth.
Apple tries to deliver the best products that it possibly can. The motivation comes from within, they don’t keep looking over their shoulder because the route they have chosen was decided years ago and the groundwork has already been done in readiness for what they are planning for the future.
You are dead wrong. Apple is coasting badlyin important areas. With or without competition, Apple has been disappointing in the last 7 years for Mac users. Airport users. Aperture users. iWork users. iTunes users. iPod users. Anyone who wants better battery life. Anyone who has legacy peripherals now living in overpriced dongle hell. And a lot more

Well, i have to say they have been in beleaguered territory for some time now. Same way Blackberry was. Intel will probably fall harder and faster though as they NEED MS. They put all of their eggs in one basket. MS can possibly pivot like IBM did, but Intel? Intel is toast.
Good. Microsoft is a decent software company.
They should be focused on multi-platform solutions.
Windows can live in the cloud, azure is a solid product.
Microsoft should have dumped Surface two years ago.
Stubbornness and saving face amidst the demise of the Windows Phone is all that’s keeping it alive. They have the ca$h to burn while they delude themselves. That’s fine with me! Maybe it will help them along the road to total bankruptcy, marking the end of our intolerable and persistent Dark Age of Computing. 😛
