“Apple Inc.’s iPhone X appears to be winning over more consumers than the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus,” Annie Palmer reports for TheStreet. “That’s according to new data from RBC Capital Markets, which surveyed more than 4,000 people interested in buying an iPhone and found that 28% of respondents said they plan on purchasing the iPhone X. By comparison, about 17% said they want to buy an iPhone 8, while 20% intend on purchasing an iPhone 8 Plus.”
“‘Our survey helps confirm our thesis that the rich feature set and differentiated design of the iPhone X will enable a mix shift toward it despite its significant price premium,’ RBC analyst Amit Daryanani wrote in a note to clients on Monday,” Palmer reports. “Wall Street has been growing increasingly concerned that consumers aren’t buying the iPhone 8, in favor of waiting for the iPhone X.”
“Consumers in the survey said that they’re most excited about the iPhone X’s wireless charging features. This is somewhat perplexing because the iPhone 8/8 Plus also have wireless charging, Daryanani noted,” Palmer reports. “Other iPhone X features that responded said they were interested in were facial recognition, the phone’s edge-to-edge screen design and its augmented reality/virtual reality capabilities.”

MacDailyNews Take: Good news for Apple’s iPhone ASP (if they can ever make enough).
Let’s not be too hasty, though. As we wrote last month: Let’s allow the entire iPhone family to be on the market, around the world, for some time before we judge the iPhone mix… Some people will (think they) want the Home button and Touch ID. Many millions worldwide will be swayed by iPhone 8/Plus’ lower prices and promotions relative to iPhone X. Apple is usually close to dead on with pricing. Promotions are another variable. This one is tricky, but we wouldn’t bet against Apple on this.

This is pretty much the universal reaction to what would have been the world’s best smartphone had the iPhone X not existed. Again, Apple may have a problem on their hands if they’ve made too many iPhone 8/Plus units and are not prepared to market and promo them like crazy. Since the U.S. carriers are already offering iPhone 8/Plus promotions, Apple seems to have planned for the expected reaction to iPhone 8/Plus with iPhone X looming over them. — MacDailyNews, September 19, 2017

The fact that there’s only 1 model of the X and 2 models of the 8 doesn’t matter – these are different product classes.
I am having a lot of issues this iPhone cycle. While I have assured my kids they are not getting the iPhone X … I still have resolved that fact with myself. I definitely want the iPhone X, however I find myself leaning more and more towards the 8 Plus. Most of the reason currently is due to price and availability. Sprint has some really good deals for my account and I can get them now. Availability is probably more important for me, because I’m still using a 6 Plus, which is showing its age as iOS 11 has not been kind to it. But I’m held from pulling the trigger because do I really want to be a step behind the most advance iPhone out there?
I do not want a glass backed iPhone.
Then you probably don’t want an iPhone that has capacitive/wireless charging. Apple would only have the choice of a glass, plastic or ceramic back. That’s what happens when people demand all these features. Apple has to compromise. I also would never have wanted capacitive/wireless charging and would have preferably gone with a metal case. Now, repair costs are much, much higher when the glass backing shatters.
Apple’s catering to their customers’ demands? Since when?
I do not recall the last time you wanted anything to do with Apple or said anything positive.
From a contrarian viewpoint, the fact that you do not want the iPhone X means that it will be an incredible blockbuster of a product for Apple.
Even though originally I wanted an iPhone X I’m thinking of just holding on to my iP7 Plus for another year when Apple’s next iteration will probably get rid of the display ears design issue. I do believe this was a situation they talked themselves into as a non-issue and perhaps it is but I’m not one of those who needs the latest versions, even though I have the luxury of affording it if I want.
Rather spend my excess Apple-bucks on a new 2018 Mac Pro next year assuming it isn’t actually released in 2019. That would be a deal breaker.
I like the iPhone 8+ and think it is a great value. My problem is that my fingerprints are so faint, they just don’t show up so I always have to submit my 8 numbers. With the iPhone X, the facial recognition makes life easier for me. I intend buying the 64 Gb one since I never use near that much in my iPhoneS.
I wanted one, but I couldn’t justify spending that much money on one if I want to continue upgrading my phone every two years. I’m more than happy with the iPhone 8 (especially coming from the 6 which I held onto a bit longer than normal so as to buy an Apple Watch last year). I really wish they had put the 8 plus camera in the 8 (it can be done since the X has it with roughly the same size body). Cost is not the issue since the plus is not hugely more expensive. I just don’t want a phone that big full stop.
