“As promised, Apple on Thursday began rolling out 4K HDR movies on its iTunes Store, content that customers will be able to stream using the company’s new Apple TV 4K set-top box come next week,” AppleInsider reports.
“Apple began the process late in the day, and only certain titles are currently offered with 4K HDR support. It seems the company is rolling out availability by region, starting with the U.S.,” AppleInsider reports. “Movies, TV shows and other video properties benefitting from 4K HDR will show up with special icons.”
“With Apple TV… shipments set to arrive on Sept. 22, Apple still has a week to build out its 4K HDR content library,” AppleInsider reports. “Once the 4K set-top streamer is in customer hands, the company should have a healthy stable of titles ready for rental or purchase. ”

MacDailyNews Take: The 4K HDR title are going to be gorgeous on our 4K Sony TVs. Now, we just need the Amazon app ahead of season 2 of The Grand Tour in 4K (due this October or November)!
(We had to watch season 1 in 4K using the Amazon app on our Sony TVs, so it’ll be nice to finally have those capabilities — the app and 4K HDR — right on our new, already preordered Apple TVs!)

What movies are 4K? How can you find them?
Buy a Roku or 4K bluray player and all will be revealed. BluRay discs are the best value in my opinion if you don’t have high speed internet,especially if other users will want to use the internet while you watch a film.
Basically all cinematic and digital content recorded in the last several years was mastered at 4K resolution or even greater. To purchase it for home use, the distribution has been a mess as everybody now wants to tie you into a subscription model. Comcast Xfinity and DirectTV offer an increasing amount of content. Sony has a video service and Netflix has a sizable library. YouTube has shitloads of high rez time waster content.
And of course Amazon’s got a lot too using their streaming stick or Roku for a lot less than Apple charges for its set top box. Moreover, most of the decent 4K televisions have an ethernet port and streaming capability so if you have blazing fast internet, you may not find you need any external box. My recommendation: Panasonic or Sony.

Great that Apple is upgrading existing HD purchases for free. This could be the way to future-proof one’s collection.
Can’t believe the studios went for it. Or would Apple be covering the cost themselves?
