“And so it begins. The promised truce among wireless carriers is over,” Scott Moritz reports for Bloomberg. “After vowing to avoid a repeat of the blistering iPhone price war of last year, AT&T Inc. will fire the first shot — offering a free iPhone with the purchase of another, for customers who also subscribe to its DirecTV satellite service.”
Moritz reports, “The buy-one-get-one-free promotion starts Friday and applies to the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, among other phones. AT&T hasn’t said whether the deal will be extended to Apple Inc.’s most expensive phone ever — the $999 iPhone X, aka 10 — which marks a decade since the company entered the phone business.”
MacDailyNews Take: We very highly doubt the iPhone X would be included in this promotion.
Moritz reports, “T-Mobile US Inc., which was the first and most aggressive on price last year, said it was steering clear this time around. Instead, the company plans to offer a $300 trade-in credit for customers buying the iPhone X, as well as the new 8 and 8 Plus. The trade-in must be an iPhone 6 or newer.”

AT&T customers who purchase an iPhone can also get an iPad for $99.99. The deal requires a 2-year wireless service contract.

Why do you have to buy direct tv which offers no cable service in Ny area. At & t disolve there service in Tenn, now they have service in NY. If you get there service from Direct Tv you will owe considering you can’t get hi speed cable service because they don’t offer service. Ask the Tenn. student who could not get any cable service in his neighborhood because none of the cable companies would install in there neighborhood yet the power company did from the another community.

DirectTV doesn’t offer cable service anywhere. It is a satellite broadcasting company. AT&T, which owns DirectTV, only provides cable TV (U-Verse) in the relatively few locations where it (1) is the incumbent local landline company and (2) has installed a fiber network that has adequate capacity for voice, data, and TV. Everywhere else, it steers its customers to Direct TV. The landline company in most of New York and New England is Verizon Communications (Not Verizon Wireless), formed from the merger of NyNex with General Telephone. Since AT&T doesn’t provide phone service in NY, it doesn’t provide cable TV. You can watch Direct TV anywhere in the USA.
I don’t want a “free” second phone. I want an AT&T subsidy for $450 on each phone, starting with the first. I’m game for a two year contract. Not going anywhere. I plan on adding a 5th line.
Would rather pay $749 for the iPhone X 256GB than $1149.
What if I already have ATT and DIRECTV – will they still let me get the deal?
Don’t count on it unless your out of contract and in a position to cancel your existing AT&T services. Been there/tried that.
