Apple is secretly trying to create a $14 billion market

“Apple Inc. is on par to create a $14 billion market for 3-D sensing hardware by 2020 as the iPhone becomes the largest augmented reality platform in the world, Deutsche Bank analysts said, according to a report from Bloomberg,” Kinsey Grant writes for TheStreet.

“Semiconductor manufacturers AMS AG NPV, Aixtron SE, Largan Precision Co., Sunny Optical Technology Groupand Tong Hsing Electronic Industries Ltd. are all set to rise as Apple implements new 3-D sensing hardware, analysts wrote, which will likely be added to both the front and back sides of the iPhone by the second half of 2018,” Grant writes.

“As Apple becomes the market leader in augmented reality platforms, Alphabet Inc.’s Android phones could have an inferior user experience for at least two years as the company works to make up ground lost to Apple,” Grant writes. “Analysts suspect hardware providers will prefer ‘”well-entrenched’ relationships with Apple over relationships with Android.”

  1. good. I don’t know much about VR/AR but it seems a good opportunity to expand and widen the gap against competitors.

I think AR games will be big, think seeing Pokemon dancing on the sidewalk etc…

Besides a boon for consumers things that increase iPhone’s desirability (Killer apps and games that ONLY exist on iOS ! ) is also good financially for Apple.

    (to my detractors, see I don’t ALWAYS criticize Apple leaders… 🙂 )

    1. Sometimes it isn’t what you say, it is how you say it. In this case, I tend to agree that AR will play a significant role in the future, although it may not be quite as ubiquitous as the hype would have us believe.

  2. Not sure about a 2 year headstart with ARCore hot on ARKit’s heels. Similar to Google Play services, updates will not be coupled with Android versions so a good portion of Android devices may have AR capabilities w/o releasing specialized HW like they required for Tango.
