“EMarketer predicts 14.5 million people from the ages of 12 to 17 will use Facebook in 2017, a drop of 3.4 percent from the prior year,” Sarah Frier reports for Bloomberg. “Teens are migrating instead to Snap Inc.’s Snapchat and Instagram, the photo-sharing app that Facebook owns, the research company said Monday in a statement.”
“Facebook has continued to grow around the world, with more than 2 billion users this year, but younger people are finding it less compelling, said Oscar Orozco, a forecasting analyst at EMarketer,” Frier reports. “The company needs to attract younger users so they build a Facebook habit that will carry into their adult years, when they become prime customers for Facebook advertising. ”

“EMarketer forecasting analyst Oscar Orozco says teens and tweens, seem less engaged on Facebook, logging in less frequently and spending less time there,” Jessica Guynn reports for USA Today. “What’s more: There are now ‘Facebook nevers,’ children becoming tweens who are skipping Facebook altogether.”
“According to eMarketer, this marks the first time eMarketer has ever predicted a decline in Facebook usage for any age group,” Guynn reports. “For years there have been warnings that Facebook was losing its cool with young people.”

When you look at a social network as “me and all my friends” that’s one thing. When it’s “My mom and all her friends…” there’s not as strong of a drive to stay engaged 🙂
For years, FB was restricted to college aged kids. Then there was the full public release with the years of older, non-techy folks trying to get the hang of using it. As such, it remained a youth bastion. But that’s over. Granny’s on it every day now. Move on to the next youth culture bastion. Don’t let the old folks know. Inevitable.
Exactly. Six years ago, when I asked my little sister and her friends (all 12 or 13 years old at the time) why they don’t use Facebook, they all giggled and replied, “Nobody uses ‘mombook’ anymore — duh!” I heard never heard that phrase before.
Based on that one sentence, I never bought any FB stock. Instead, that money was indeed used to buy nothing but AAPL. I suppose I should give each of the girls a bonus for the best stock tip I ever got!

2 billion users? I have never been able to completely delete my account, it’s “inactive”, if I ever use my facebook login on other sites I’ll bet it’s counted amongst the 2 billion. Facebook is totally ad revenue and I’m very bearish on its future.

I’ve worked in a school system for years (middle and high school). The only people on Facebook are the teachers and parents. This is not a new trend. Anytime we bring up social media safety, it is always SnapChat that the students are using. Even Instagram is starting to decline.

I see this crap on my wife’s friends Facebook posts (my wife doesn’t post that crap – she knows better, although her taste in friends is questionable). Facebook is one great Puke-O-Rama.
It’s that, or political hatred. Kids are all gone from it (mine and their friends) and what’s left is us older folks who are spread out across the globe who like to keep in touch.
But yeah, it’s often puke-worthy going thru the recent posts every day…

I enjoy updates from high school and work friends I’m geographically unlikely to see any time soon. For the most part it is curiousity rather than active communication.
Family and long distance debates on the issues of the day are what I use it for. Twitter is just too short form for me.
I have a Facebook account that I do not use as Facebook wants and rarely use it.
It is locked, I do not post to it and use it to follow individuals and organizations that use Facebook as the primary means of messaging. The rest of it I have little use for.
Good. Zuckerberg needs to lose his company and see what it feels like to on the other side.
