“Apple today released the seventh beta of an upcoming tvOS 11 update for the fourth-generation Apple TV, and within the beta, there appear to be assets for ‘J105a,’ previously revealed as the code name for an upcoming 4K Apple TV,” Juli Clover writes for MacRumors.
“Developer Guilherme Rambo, who has made a name for himself delving into the HomePod firmware, shared a screenshot depicting HDR image assets with a file name that includes ‘J105a,'” Clover writes. “The ‘J105a’ name was first shared by Bloomberg in February, in a report that suggested Apple was working on a fifth-generation Apple TV capable of streaming Ultra HD 4K video.”
Clover writes, “Apple has also started listing select movies as 4K and HDR in iTunes purchase history, leading to speculation that a new Apple TV is imminent. ”

Panasonic freely admits that LG is the only game in town for OLED panels, but Panasonic has plenty to offer in other aspects of the system and are working with LG on flagship OLED models. If you are viewing this site on an Apple product, then you must be able to survive without OLED and could get a better value with an LED backlit LCD screen supporting the latest HDR standards.
You just have to wait for that Wisconsin factory to start cranking out Apple’s new TV sets. Oh wait, is that still a secret?
I hae a couple of 60″ LG plasma HDTVs — not 4K, but great picture, high contrast, and very fast refresh rate for sports and fast motion. I won’t be moving to 4K until they break. So I am one of the subset of people who is not that concerned about 4K right now. I am much more concerned about the AppleTV user interface, remote, and content, as well as its integration with the rest of the Apple ecosystem.
Unfortunately this year may be the first year I don’t upgrade any of my Apple gear, excepting the MacBook Pro I just bought.
I have a 6 year old 42″ Sony LCD TV in my living room. With the distance I sit I won’t notice the difference between 1080 or 4K so that rules out a new ATV.
My 2011 iMac has a 6tb drive in it and is just used for email, internet and low power stuff that it is still able to happily cope with. Plus the new iMac hasn’t a large enough drive to hold my iTunes library.
My IPad mini & IPad Air 2 are used for YouTube, internet, shopping and video streaming. Though the mini is slow it can still easily do what I need.
I have no need for an Apple Watch so that leaves my iPhone. That too has now reached a point where it’s too powerful for the mundane things I do. I don’t use it for gaming or intensive tasks.
I can’t afford over $1000 for an iPhone 8 so unless a 7s has some must have tech I’m afraid I’m done with my upgrade cycle for a while.
