Bolt-S USB-C cable brings MagSafe back to the Mac

“Removal of MagSafe from the latest round of MacBooks and MacBook Pros was one of the most controversial changes,” Andrew O’Hara writes for iDownload Blog. “MagSafe was life saving when someone inadvertently tripped over your power cable. Preventing your $1,000+ machine from toppling to the ground.”

“USB-C has quite its list of advantages, but it was still a difficult design decision that still angers people to this day,” O’Hara writes. “Vinpok is looking to remedy that with their launch of the Bolt-S USB-C magnetic cable for MacBook and MacBook Pro.”

“I really haven’t missed MagSafe all that much since I upgraded to the 2016 MacBook Pro. I’ve found the cable removes itself easily enough and the added advantages have overweighed the downsides. That said, the Bolt-S is the closest yet to bring MagSafe back,” O’Hara writes. “If I still has a Retina MacBook, there is no way I would leave the adapter in my one USB port at all times, but on the MacBook Pro, I can easily see using this.”

MacDailyNews Take: This is a brilliant idea, if we don’t say so ourselves.

Now, we would love to see a tiny MagSafe adapter cap (or very short corded adapter) that sticks into the USB-C port for MagSafe power cords. That way we don’t have to regress in the name of progress.MacDailyNews Take, March 11, 2015, two days after the new MacBook was unveiled

We’ve also heard positive things about the Stouchi MacSafe Magnetic USB C to USB C Charging Cable (US$26.90 via Amazon).

  1. Great, but still no charging light. Apple dumped Magsafe 2 for no good reason. They could have kept that port on the new MBP’s. Yes, USB-C devices are becoming more common, but the overwhelming majority of USB-C chargers are for phones and tablets, insufficient for charging a laptop.
Between all the missing ports, dumping MagSafe2 for an inferior method with no status light, inexplicably removing the backlit Apple logo, and adding a freaking douche-bar nobody wanted replacing a far more functional row of F-keys/ESC key/brightness/volume, my 30-year love affair with Mac is over. I’ll probably keep using them, but I won’t enthusiastically promote or recommend them anymore. Tim Cook has done a sucky job.

  2. Being using the griffin cable since I got my new TB MBP. It works well but not as good as the MagSafe2.
I will try the BoltS since the protrusion is smaller than the Griffin version.
Now what I need to find is a cheaper usbC charger that is safe and has enough power for the MBP.

  3. I said when they announced the MacBook Pro without MagSafe that this was a money grab by Apple. They can’t charge us extra for MagSafe so the only way to make a buck off it would be to remove it and then license to third parties.

  4. Magsafe was a nice idea, but the magnetic board on the laptop’s end gets dirty, attracts metals, can become a fire hazard, and just plain old only charges, the Apple logo light was cool, but a Mac stands out for other reasons now, at 40 the mac is an Adult brand… Bring back Magsafe just to charge? And let you know it’s only charging? Evolve, please…
