Apple CEO Tim Cook disagrees with Trump’s response to Charlottesville, donates $2 million to anti-hate organizations

“Apple Inc CEO Tim Cook has joined a chorus of business leaders who have voiced their opposition to President Donald Trump after he blamed white nationalists and anti-racism activists equally for violence in Virginia over the weekend,” Brendan O’Brien reports for Reuters.

“‘I disagree with the president and others who believe that there is a moral equivalence between white supremacists and Nazis, and those who oppose them by standing up for human rights. Equating the two runs counter to our ideals as Americans,’ Cook wrote in a note late on Wednesday to employees, according to technology news website Recode,” O’Brien reports. “Cook also said in the letter that Apple will donate $1 million a piece to the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League and will match two-for-one their donations to the organizations and other human rights groups until Sept. 30.”

“‘Regardless of your political views, we must all stand together on this one point — that we are all equal,” O’Brien reports. “As a company, through our actions, our products and our voice, we will always work to ensure that everyone is treated equally and with respect,’ Cook wrote.”

Like so many of you, equality is at the core of my beliefs and values. The events of the past several days have been deeply troubling for me, and I’ve heard from many people at Apple who are saddened, outraged or confused.

What occurred in Charlottesville has no place in our country. Hate is a cancer, and left unchecked it destroys everything in its path. Its scars last generations. History has taught us this time and time again, both in the United States and countries around the world.

We must not witness or permit such hate and bigotry in our country, and we must be unequivocal about it. This is not about the left or the right, conservative or liberal. It is about human decency and morality. In the wake of the tragic and repulsive events in Charlottesville, we are stepping up to help organizations who work to rid our country of hate. Apple will be making contributions of $1 million each to the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League.   1. I personally know an historian who marched that day in Charlottesville support of not attempting to paper over history wrong headedly.

        1. Did you actually read what you pasted? At the time MLK was alive, the consensus around educated, scientific minded people was that homosexuality was a psychological disorder that might be cured with treatment.

          On top of that, MLK was a rather religious fellow, and as we know, religious teachings treat homosexuality as sin. But rather than telling the young man that he was going to burn in hell unless he repents, rejects his vile thoughts, comes to Jesus and begs for forgiveness, he tries to suggest talking to a mental health professional. No hate, no bigotry, just a suggestion from a person who shows compassion and love. Within the context, every sentence in that quote is positive. Don’t forget, the boy who asked the question was asking for help, complaining that he ‘feels about boys the way he ought to feel about girls’. In other words, he framed it as something wrong, which he wanted to right.

          Don’t forget, in the 50s, for gays, the only ‘solution’ to their ‘problem’ was to find a way to a ‘cure’, so that they can be ‘normal’ like everyone else. Their hope was that medical science will discover the underlying cause to their ‘disorder’ and develop a ‘cure’, so that they can feel about girls what other, ‘normal’ people feel. Even one of the pioneers in the human sexual response studies, William Masters, researched ‘conversion therapy’ and even wrote a book about it (largely discredited by everyone since). Well into the 70s, many people still believed it was a mental disorder (rather than a genetic trait).

It is useless to expatiate on its disadvantages. I think it however a greater evil to the white man than to the black race, & while my feelings are strongly enlisted in behalf of the latter, my sympathies are more strong for the former.” Also of note is Lee’s support of the work by his wife and her mother to liberate slaves and fund their move to Liberia, the success of his wife and daughter in setting up an illegal school for slaves on the Arlington plantation, and the freeing of Custis’ slaves in 1862.

          So, according to “Predrag,” we should give MLK a pass because of the times he lived in and because he did other great things and therefore not rip down MLK statues, but we should rip down Lee statues and ignore the times he lived in and the other great things he did which is directly in opposition with his specious argument for keeping the MLK statues.

      5. While I obviously don’t speak for Tim Cook, I’d imagine his response would be aligned with what most reasonable people would say about this who are against many of the confederate statues being displayed on public property as opposed to being in a museum.

        That is to say that MLK, is known for many things other than his stance on gay marriage. He did not fight or lead a war for states’ rights over human rights. His statues recognize him for his civil rights activities and doctrine of peace to affect change.

        We can point at other statues/monuments/schools/etc… honoring Washington, Jefferson, and others who owned slaves. What we’re recognizing them for isn’t that they owned slaves or fought for states’ rights to own slaves, but rather that they founded this great democracy.

        As far as Robert E. Lee… A statue or memorial recognizing that he freed slaves (including those formerly owned by Washington) would be fine. A statue of him as a war hero against America… that belongs in a museum.

        And while we can (hopefully) rationally and reasonably debate what is and isn’t appropriate to display on public grounds… really when it comes to controversial displays, the better place for them is in museums and not in public parks, government buildings, where some people adamantly opposed to them interact (sometimes without choice).

        They should all be preserved and placed so that people can learn via docent (or iPhones/iPads with Beacons!) as opposed to being placed where they’re subject to the elements as well as vandalism.

        The protestors of their removals should focus their energy on pooling resources to provide for this preservation and education in such facilities.

  10. I’m really confused by this whole thing (truly not trolling here). Keeping in line with all stuff Apple, I respect Tim Cook as a business leader, but his memo is a head-scratcher. This is what Trump said:

    Why does Cook have an issue with this? Doesn’t this make his memo deceptive at best?

    And MLK is a frequent target of Cook’s quotes, and for good reason- he was a brilliant man and a rebel in his time. But Dr Alveda King agrees with Trump on this one (note: yes, I know Alveda is a Fox contributor and Trump supporter. But she still has a voice and mind, and ostensibly a deeper connection to the MLK philosophy):

  18. I am sick of Tim Cook grandstanding at every little social event as if he is the only corporate execs that do so. He is not eve an activist CEO, as all he does is distribute a little memo among employers etc. I also do not want him to donate money from Apple coffer into which he milked us from. Apple customers consist of full of diverse individuals. For obvious cause such as helping poor etc, sure, but if he wants to show “his” stand by money, use his own please. All other colleagues of him, Bill Gates, Larry Ellison, Zuckerberg, and what’s his name in Google, are all contributing their own huge fortune to good cause (yes, I know they are mostly corporate founders). Other companies do things more quietly but far more effectively for actual results,or CEO by their own acts, rather than just barking. Tim, show me your money first and we shall follow.

  23. It seems hate in all its forms is wrong, but never as wrong as when displayed by a group that we disagree with; those we call “hate groups”. We hate hate groups.
    Trump never drew a “moral equivalence” between the two opposing groups at Charlottesville. He simply said that there was blame for the violence on both sides, which is true. Liberals seem to be incapable of objectively analyzing anything; rather they see the world as they would wish that it is.
    Just like Trump on that bus. He never advocated for molesting women. What he said was that if one is famous, women will LET you do anything. If you doubt that assertion, go to any rock concert. professional or even college athletic event. There will be female groupies hanging around hoping that they are the chosen one(s).
    Like it or not, on both occasions he spoke the truth.
