Apple blocks Apple Pay support on sites selling white nationalist apparel

“The most valuable company in the world is taking a stand against websites selling apparel and paraphernalia from white nationalists and hate groups,” Ryan Mac and Blake Montgomery report for Buzzfeed. “On Wednesday, Apple confirmed to BuzzFeed News that it had disabled Apple Pay support for a handful of websites that sold sweaters with Nazi logos, T-shirts emblazoned with the phrase ‘White Pride,’ and a bumper sticker showing a car plowing into stick figure demonstrators.”

“Apple’s move to distance itself from these sites comes as a number of technology companies have faced intense scrutiny for enabling the websites or social media accounts of white nationalist and white supremacist organizations. On Monday, both GoDaddy and Google removed the registration capabilities of The Daily Stormer, a white supremacist blog, in response to its posts about the events in Charlottesville.,” Mac and Montgomery report. “Apple removed Apple Pay capabilities from little-known sites, including americanvikings.com and vinlandclothing.com, the latter of which sells apparel with Nazi logos. Apple Pay’s ‘acceptable use guidelines’ state that users may not incorporate its payment service into a site that ‘promotes hate, violence, or intolerance based on race, age, gender, gender identity, ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation.'”

“Brien James, the owner of americanvikings.com, said he identifies as ‘a civic nationalist’ and ‘pro-white’ and told BuzzFeed News he was unaware his business had even accepted Apple Pay,” Mac and Montgomery report. “James called the site a hobby, and did not seem too worried about losing payments capabilities or the possibility of being taken offline. ‘I don’t know the legalities of free speech on a website or if you own a hosting company… but if you run a business you have a right to decide who or not you do business with,’ James said. ‘If they don’t like me, they don’t have to do business with me.'”

MacDailyNews Note: Apple CEO Tim Cook sent a message to Apple employees on Wednesday:

Team,

Like so many of you, equality is at the core of my beliefs and values. The events of the past several days have been deeply troubling for me, and I’ve heard from many people at Apple who are saddened, outraged or confused.

What occurred in Charlottesville has no place in our country. Hate is a cancer, and left unchecked it destroys everything in its path. Its scars last generations. History has taught us this time and time again, both in the United States and countries around the world.

We must not witness or permit such hate and bigotry in our country, and we must be unequivocal about it. This is not about the left or the right, conservative or liberal. It is about human decency and morality. I disagree with the president and others who believe that there is a moral equivalence between white supremacists and Nazis, and those who oppose them by standing up for human rights. Equating the two runs counter to our ideals as Americans.

Regardless of your political views, we must all stand together on this one point — that we are all equal. As a company, through our actions, our products and our voice, we will always work to ensure that everyone is treated equally and with respect.

I believe Apple has led by example, and we’re going to keep doing that. We have always welcomed people from every walk of life to our stores around the world and showed them that Apple is inclusive of everyone. We empower people to share their views and express themselves through our products.

In the wake of the tragic and repulsive events in Charlottesville, we are stepping up to help organizations who work to rid our country of hate. Apple will be making contributions of $1 million each to the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League. We will also match two-for-one our employees’ donations to these and several other human rights groups, between now and September 30.

In the coming days, iTunes will offer users an easy way to join us in directly supporting the work of the SPLC.

Dr. Martin Luther King said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter.” So, we will continue to speak up. These have been dark days, but I remain as optimistic as ever that the future is bright. Apple can and will play an important role in bringing about positive change.

Best,
Tim

  1. “If you run a business you have a right to decide who or not you do business with.”

This goes for being forced to bake cakes for homosexual “weddings,” too.

    1. Wrong. The civil rights amendment says it is illegal to discriminate against race, religion, gender, disability in public business. It is legal to discriminate if you are a private business like a paid members only club.

      1. So, we agree: Apple is wrong to discriminate, pulling their “cake” from those with whom they disagree, discriminating against them and curtailing their Constitutionally-granted free speech.

      2. So which one is homosexuality? Race, religion, gender, or disability? Doesn’t fit any of those. It’s simply a behavior.

Since you’re so smart and smug, how would you handle this situation:
A member of ISIS walks into an American business specializing in taking video for special events. Says they need a professional to video some new beheadings of infidels. I guess you would have to do it or you would be discriminating against their religion. Making you a bigot and insensitive to their following of Sharia Law.
Oh, and after you take the video for them, because according to you, you can’t turn them down because of their religion, they then notice you also build websites for people. Guess what your next job is idiot?
And just because I know what your going say, that you cant be forced to participate in something illegal. Guess what, that bakery was asked to participate in a wedding that was illegal Oregon at the time.

      3. Well then Jimmy, the Christian cake baker Civil Rights were discriminated against when the people of this country, the press and the government went after them and NOT the Muslim baker who rejected a design request for a Gay Wedding cake. Oh, that’s right, wrong religion. You see Civil Rights have nothing to do with it Jimmy. It’s the vileness and hatred of the Left perpetrated on others whose core values do not match to their standards and beliefs. Case in point, has little Timmy had Apple Pay removed from apparel sites selling the Socialist/Communist Antifa propaganda shirts or domestic terrorists Black Lives Matter related sites? Hmmm?? Like the MO state motto says: Show Me!

        1. That kinda reminds me of a conversation I overheard at a college campus recently:
“I hate you because I hate your beliefs. You have no right to exist because you are a hater. ? . ? . ?”

          Who is the real hater?

Why do we hate those whom we disagree? Who taught us to hate those with whom we disagree? If we hate those with whom we disagree – they are not the haters, WE ARE!

Who was that who once said something in this manner: (paraphrased) “The sign of an intelligent person is one who can entertain a thought contrary to his belief without getting angry over it!”

    2. Wow downvoted pretty bad in this one. Apple can refuse to do business with a company that sells offensive materials but it is not ok for some one who believes that homosexuality is wrong and not doing business with them. Talk about bigots man. It’s ok for Apple to do this but others can’t express their beliefs. Libtards at it again. And yes Tim should not use Apple to express his personal beliefs. What would happen if all the people who have stocks in Apple who do not believe as he does cashed in their stocks? Think about that. Oh I forgot, Libtards won’t allow you to see things your way if they oppose their views. Libtards are the biggest biggots in the world.

      1. “What would happen if all the people who have stocks in Apple who do not believe as he does cashed in their stocks?”
It would never happen because money trumps every ideology. 🙂 Has anyone here divested themselves of Apple’s liberal stocks? Or for that matter, products?

        1. Then why do you hang out here then?
So you get your jollies commenting on an Apple board for Apple fans because you don’t like Apple.
That just makes you a troll

        2. You my friend don’t have a clue. Seem like there are a whole lot of assholes on this bus. Some are anonymous and pop up and try to be insightful. Some stand behind their words.

Bottwipe, buttwipe, gay love for bottman are all are mean spirited punks supporting a mean spirited crooked businessman masquerading as president.

I don’t like it. The president daily shits on America and ameriKKKa is emboldened.

Never again. Don’t like that bottwipe is a pathetic example of a human being. Then don’t comment on it .

It’s my own private idaho and I will taunt his ideas all I want. Notice what I just said.

I got where I am on a long, long journey as have we all. I do not discount bottwipes journey (he doesn’t tell it by the way) but he does mine, not because it is fake or wrong but to advance his fucked up agenda.

And he treats every one else the same way.

          In my humble opinion.

          It’s somewhat amusing.

        3. oh no! you conspiracy theorist! you’ve been listening to that Alex Jones! It’s the underground lizard people that burned that Lincoln bust!

what a pile of excrement you are.

        4. Now that is so funny shit. Somebody needs to teach them that is concrete, not wood. You don’t burn concrete. You smash it. I don’t know if there is any help for these youngsters. Probably can’t even check the oil in a car. Idiots.

        5. Buttvinnik is so full of crap he can’t move around in his diaper. Do you really believe anything he says. I just comment about him because I get pleasure out of it. He probably owns stock, has everything Mac and sits in his Mom’s basement until his last welfare check runs out and she boots him out.
He simply posts because getting a rise out of people gives him a woodie.

        6. So he owns stock and Mac’s and collects welfare?? WTF?? Do you know just how much of your stupidity is showing through? Maybe your the one on welfare, because obviously you’ve never been educated.

        7. For someone who loathes “fascist Tim Cook” you certainly spend a lot of your time on a website devoted to his products. From what I’ve seen you have more posts on this site than anyone. If you hate him—and, by extension, his company’s products—that much maybe you should find a company whose CEO you love and spend more time on a site devoted to his or her company.

    3. I work in healthcare and we have to take anyone who darkens our door regardless of insurance, ability to pay, etc. That is a legal requirement and a moral obligation. The only way we can deny treatment is if you refuse to abide by our standards – behavior, consent to treat, compliance with the law (no firearms). BTW, if you have a gun you will have to surrender it so we can lock it up in a safe for your- and our, safety.

Unlike a hospital, what Apple sells is not something necessary to human health or the preservation of life. It is appropriate for them to reserve the right to refuse business. The instance of a Bakery or catering service is appropriate but not on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity as people do not choose to be Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered or others.

      1. Sorry, your wrong people who lgbt are so by choice. They choose to be gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. Nature by its very self tells that. Lets all be gay or lesbian and see where the world population goes in a 1000 years short of artificial insemination, not natural, only a man and a woman can do that Naturally.

        1. So when did YOU choose your sexual orientation? Do you think people choose to be gay — especially when you can still be fired in more than half the country — or even be jailed or killed in some countries??

Do yourself a favor, and read something before posting.

        2. There are people who hate Muslims because they are Muslims; there are people who hate Jews because they are Jews; there are there are people who hate Christians because they are Christians; there are people who hate Buddhists because they are Buddhists; there are people who hate blacks because they are black…. People hate.

If you go back into history Christians have a horrendous record of violence and genocide. Christians in the antebellum South believed that the “white race” was superior to the “black race,” and that the Bible condones slavery. How many blacks were killed, beaten, worked to death, subjected to horrendous conditions, bought and sold like cattle, had their families ripped apart by God fearing Christians?

For a great examination of terrorism perpetrated by Christians, here is a site for you to examine.

          http://markhumphrys.com/christianity.killings.html

I’m not saying that Muslims haven’t committed terrorism, but, for want of a better term, Christians are certainly no angels.

    4. Your argument is completely flaccid and just as useless. Refusing to do business based on illegal discrimination is a completely different situation than the twist you have tried to apply.

You have no case what so ever. You have the right to your position, but the ignorance that you use to support it is astounding and has no basis in the constitution or in discrimination statutes.

  2. If this keeps up Apple might not let the government of his home nation use Apple Pay.

It’s going to be quite the race on what to do block Apple Pay to CEO’s on the Strategic and Policy Forum or wait until it no exists.

Karma, it can be such a bitch. I’m enjoying the meltdown and my told you so smile. I hope that Apple’s home nation one day does make it back to greatness but of course sometimes that requires hitting rock bottom first.

Meanwhile in other news the free and civilized world keeps getting greater and greater and greater.

  3. Ethno-nationalism—it’s losers. It’s a fringe element. I think the media plays it up too much, and we gotta help crush it… These guys are a collection of clowns.

The Democrats, the longer they talk about identity politics, I got ’em. I want them to talk about racism every day. If the left is focused on race and identity, and we go with economic nationalism, we can crush the Democrats.

Steve Bannon, White House Chief Strategist, August 16, 2017

    1. Just eating up today’s talking points, aren’t you be1014. bannon just spreads the manure… you and bottwipe just lap it up and off you go… skipping through the fields, spreading more manure.

SAD! really. You can just watch the shifting talking point as soon as the old ones wear out.

  4. This just in:

Tim Cook announces, effective immediately, all Apple Stores can no longer accept US currency depicting any Forefather suspected of or known to have participated in the selling or buying of African American slaves.
    $5 dollar bills always Welcome?

    1. Has the average intelligence of Americans dropped down into the toilet? That is how it is viewed from the outside. As I have numerous American friends, (Democrats and Republicans) I do not see it but then again, they are college educated and used to diversity, not like Buttvinnik and his dim-wit half brother F2T2. Most Americans do NOT support white supremacists like these two twits do.

      1. Just like President Trump, I do not “support white supremacists.” Nothing I have ever posted, spoken or thought indicates such support.

I expect an apology, if you’re even a semi-honorable person. If you do not apologize, we’ll all know for sure all we need to know about you.

        1. How do you know about Tump’s beliefs? A personal chat with him? Divine intervention? In case you are a complete moron, the whole WORLD thinks this because of his actions and words.

BTW, I do not apologize to trash.

        2. How do you know about my beliefs? A personal chat with me? Divine intervention?

Since you are a complete moron, I’ll spell it out for you:

If I knew your real name, you’d be sued already. You have falsely accused me of something vile, with no proof whatsoever and you’re so stupid, you can’t even realize it and apologize as a normal, well-adjusted human would do when making, at best, an egregious mistake and, at worse, intentional libel.

Since you won’t apologize for your baseless libel against me, we all know exactly who’s truly “trash” here.

And, BTW, your WHOLE world is obviously very limited and tiny, as there are many millions who do not think that President Trump supports white supremacists precisely because he doesn’t and is, in fact, on record opposing the KKK/racists at least 20 times over many decades:

        3. Nice start to your rant. Seems familiar.
Anyone who supports a President who lies, has no respect for women, supports neo-nazis and white supremacists is trash. How can you even live with yourself? I love the suing part….you even sound likeTrump. And using a Hannity video…you are getting desperate my dear friend, desperate indeed. Probably had spittle coming out the corner of your mouth when you were typing.

Pure and simple trash. Can I state it any clearer?

        4. Hey Sarah, broaden your viewing scope. There is a video of Trump saying he didn’t know who Duke was AFTER one of the Hannity vignette’s. Of course, that must be fake news right? I call it selective news myself.

  5. I love my Aluminum MBP more than ever now!
If that brushed aluminum doesn’t just Scream Confederate Gray then, I don’t know what does.
I wonder when the recall to replace them all with Space Gray is coming? Oh! Whoops!! They’re going to have to change that name now. The use of the word Gray is now scrubbed from all Apple products as it could be considered sympathetic to the South. Are there any Apple Board members from Southern State?
Sounds crazy huh? I could totally see Timmy Boy capitulating.
    Like “Our President TRUMP” asked…
    “Where does it end?”

Let’s all go to iTunes and download “If the South Would Have Won” by Hank Williams Jr.
That is unless it’s been removed along with Alabama’s “Mountain Music” album.

I got a million of ’em folks.

    1. I agree with your sentiment but as for your question about board members being from the South, I do believe that Tim himself is from Alabama and Al Gore, member of the board, is from Tennessee. Can anybody verify?

  6. Unpopular opinion but I don’t like this. I don’t support any supremacy movement but when a payment vehicle business steps in and imposes its belifefs, I’m left asking, “What about when it is a different issue where I do disagree with Apple?” For example, I believe in 100 years, many current leaders’ statues will be torn down for their support of abortion which is truly horrific violence. So should Apple allow those businesses – and they are businesses – to use Apple Pay as a payment vehicle? I need a middle man that keeps its big mouth shut and let’s me speak by choosing or not to do business at whatever businesses.

Lastly, I believe fully in the First Amendment. Only by allowing unrighteous people, groups and businesses to self-identify does the public become educated and, in righteousness, chooses to take actions to make a pariah of said people, groups and businesses.

    1. “What about when it is a different issue where I do disagree with Apple?”
Oh no! What if Apple does something I don’t like?! You live, dude. Only liberals get into handwringing like this. If you really REALLY want to purchase white nationalist apparel… there are WAY more ways than Apple Pay.

  7. Eh, really can’t bring myself to get all “liberal rage” about this like some other conservatives. If they did this to BLM, I wouldn’t raise an eyebrow.

As long as I’ve got a credit card, I’m good. I wouldn’t do business with them anyway, so this really doesn’t affect me.

      1. Like I said, as long as I have a credit card and cash, I can buy what I want. Even if Apple cut off acces to EVERY company that currently uses Apple Pay. There are companies that right now still don’t take Apple Pay and I’m still living fine. I don’t know ANY company that ONLY takes Apple Pay… this posture by Apple will ensure that never happens.

And really, when I think to myself “white nationalists are inconvenienced”? My inner troll grins broadly.

        1. First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out —
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out —
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out —
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.

          — Martin Niemöller

        2. Yes, and let’s ignore the fact that Pastor Niemoller spent seven years in concentration camps specifically for protesting the Nazis. This is another effort to draw a moral equivalence between those who pursue evil and those who oppose it.

People who come in from outside a community for a “White Rights” rally and march though that community in a deliberate simulation of a Nazi or KKK demonstration while chanting Nazi, anti-semitic, and racist slogans are not “good people.” The community residents who peacefully opposed the Nazis, one of whom was killed for her opposition, are not equally to blame for the consequences.

Those who sympathize with Nazis are Nazi sympathizers. Those who collaborate with Nazis are Nazi collaborators. Pastor Niemoller fought both.

  8. Big brother apple is now dictating who you shop with and what you buy? Really, when did Apple become the lord and overseer?

Stick to making products Apple not manipulating people.

This is not Apple who APPLE does business with, it’s about them dictating WHO you do business with. Where does this slippery slope stop?

    1. Umm, the slippery slope stops when they remove Apple Pay from any and all companies altogether and you… keep living? Did conservatives just have a liberal lobotomy all over the place? These are the same kind of go nowhere concerns that you used to hear every day for the last 8 years. Relax, we won and if you REALLY want to buy white nationalist apparel, go ahead, knock yourself out!

Think about it this way, every Apple Pay purchase you make sends a bit of that Money to Apple. Is that REALLY what you want to do?

    2. How does a company’s refusal to serve hate groups constitute a restriction on who you do business with? Are you incapable of using other payment methods? And why would a hate group or a botvinnik choose to support the profits of Apple, a company that in their minds supports “libtard” Values? If your wardrobe needs some fresh swastika flag shirts or a white hood, why aren’t you paying in gold bullion, Confederate dollars, human servants, bales of cotton, pork bellies, or bitcoin? There are so many wonderful traditional choices you could use, after all, don’t you want to honor history?

Odd that suddenly the right wing thinks Apple, since Jobs died now a soulless undemocratic multinational corporation run by beancounters and mismanaging the products that once made it great, and by definition free of personal liability and the recipient of every favor/tax break/welfare that corrupt congressmen can offer and granted all the rights of a person without any responsibilities whatsoever under Citizens United decision, also cheered by the alt right at the time — ain’t it odd this company now is the basis of your scorn because the empty suit ceo dared to contradict the worst president the US has ever had. Whine whine whine.

It takes pretty thin skin to be outraged by words when non- whites have been treated to centuries of substandard treatment, and these formerly do-no-wrong corporations successfully pulled off the greatest transfer of wealth in the history of the world under your noses for the last two generations, from small businesses and from individuals to corporate coffers in foreign tax havens. You rightists didn’t make a peep. You cheered as ceos amasses insane wealth and power. You demanded more military spending, more shock and awe, and more protectionism instead of better education, better infrastructure, uncorrupted elections, and firm laws that ensured busisses reinvested their profits in America rather than in the Cayman Islands. No, you supported corporate welfare and free trade, cheap imports and the strong dollar because look at all the cheap disposable plastic shit and games you could buy. Aint that freedom?

Sorry, you got hoodwinked. The golfer in the White House is too busy twittering to defend his honor to bother supporting citizens’ demands for reform.

Also, hate speech — and that includes the sale of T shirts with offensive symbols — is not protected under the constitution. Jefferson Beauregard Sessions has stated so his very self. Even if it was, and Hate Symbols R Us took Apple to court, Apple now has enough money to buy whatever law or court settlement it wants.

As botty would say, you lose. You voters lost when you put into office corrupt congressmen who are puppets of the corporaticracy. Cook now has more political power in the US than anyone in DC right now and he knows it. If you right wingers have a problem with unchecked corporate power, you should have done something about it in the last 6 decades after Eisenhower warned you about it. Hell, listen to you today, you don’t know why you oppose Sarbanes-Oxley, but some talking head on Fox said it was bad, so that must be the full story. How could we let those poor corporations suffer?

  9. As I write using my iMac, the crescendo of the total solar eclipse will etch its way diagonally across the US, from its NW in Oregon to its SE in S. Carolina beginning in four days on Aug. 21. I liken it to an incisive cut.

The build up toward its full effect has begun. Its influence may be most felt psychologically and spiritually, and detected in super aggressive comments here, with my FB friends, elsewhere in real life, and in politics.

If my intuition is correct, the scar that remains will be a testament to its result, and that a version of the word “lunacy,” invoked during a full moon, can be adapted to “sunacy.” Peak “sunacy” in four days.

Then it will trail off until the second strong solar eclipse that will travel from Texas to New England on April 8, 2024, seven years from now. That covers the totality of the Trump administration. I fully expect Apple to achieve greater hights but, sosciety? Hmmm. If the grid survives, I should be able to keep track of it on my iPhone. If the grid does not, I can still continue to make art until my paints run out.

  10. It’s clear that any stand Apple takes will upset somebody, and personally, I applaud Tim’s stand.

If you don’t want to make a contribution, then don’t make one. If you don’t want to buy Apple’s products as a result of Tim’s statement, buy a Dell. If you own Apple’s stock then sell it. As CEO of Apple Tim has the right do do what he feels best represents Apple and its values, in doing so he is, in effect, encouraging you to evaluate your own beliefs whether or not they are in accordance with his.

Tim has made no secret of his being gay, and I’m guessing that he has experienced discrimination, or perhaps has had to overcome personal demons, both real and psychological that others haven’t, so perhaps his words ring truer for him than they do to others reading them.

This isn’t a “Liberal” or a “Conservative” issue—it is simply one man expressing what he believes. Whether you agree with him or not is up to you.

    1. Matters of technology appear to have swerved to a political junction. Thus, a CEO’s every word is judged according to some moral yardstick. I envision little boys playing pretend sword-fighting with wooden yardsticks. Why grown men would do the same has always perplexed me.

    1. apple is not the shining light of goodness and justice. It is not the maker of the finest consumer products. It is not the kingpin of the stock market. And it is not open and truthful.

      Just like any other company.

It does however own a special cachet that is respected by all its adversaries — which is why trolls so often come to visit, to squat and attempt to diminish its influence on the industry, and on the world.
