“Reflecting its focus on photography, the company has worked quite hard to make the application even more useful than before,” Evans writes. “These include new editing, organizing, Live Photo editing, improvements to the People album and improved integration with third-party photo editing apps, like Photoshop or Pixelmator.”
“Available in the Filters pane, Apple is introducing a range of powerful new filters you can use to add a little style to your images,” Evans writes. “I think they are a little more effective than the existing choices.”

Perhaps Photos is becoming a real “Aperture” type program?
Since installing Affinity Photo, I have used Pixelmator for photographs once. Pixelmator is a great program, but I can do more, and faster, in Affinity Photo. The seven extensions I’ve installed for Photos help a lot.

I cringe overtime I help upgrade someone that actually used iPhoto and have to explain the GIANT step backwards with Photos.

I have too many duplicate photos. Wish there was a better way to filter out dups and keep the highest quality originals.

Oh, and an easy way to separate images taken with a RAW+JPG camera setting. Photos displays them as a stacked set.
Sometimes I want to keep the RAW and sometimes the JPG. I just want to be able to select what I want to keep.
Now I just shoot RAW or JPG, but not RAW+JPG any longer.

I agree; that is a major pain in the butt.
Power Photos from Fatcat software is excellent. They make iPhoto Library Manager as well. You can choose to keep the highest res version, latest version etc. and also just mark duplicates with a keyword so you can check them yourself. It will merge Photos libraries as well.
