Apple’s HomePod firmware leak confirms inductive charging in ‘iPhone 8’

“Apple mistakenly released HomePod software into the wild, and the operating system revealed more details about the iPhone 8 than we’d have expected,” Chris Smith reports for BGR.

“The smart speaker already confirmed the iPhone 8’s design and revealed that there is a face unlock mechanism in the works,” Smith reports. “The software also says there’s no Touch ID sensor under the display, and that the iPhone 8 will have that high-resolution screen we heard of months ago.”

“Unsurprisingly, the next revelation is that there’s wireless charging coming to the iPhone 8, which is also we’ve been hearing for a few months now,” Smith reports. “Posted on Reddit, the following image of code in the HomePod’s firmware indicates that the iPhone 8 is getting inductive charging.”

MacDailyNews Take: Not that it ever is, but Apple’s crisis room is really not a happy place as of late.

  1. Uh-huh… I’m sure this leak was “accidental”

Apple is lowering expectations that the new phone will NOT have Touch ID, which is a BIG DEAL, btw. By the time the phone comes out, journalists will be so blasé about the lack of touch ID that it won’t even be news.

  2. I’m trying to figure out what is there to get excited about at all?

The only item that impresses me is a + size screen in a almost standard size iPhone….the rest is MEH? Inductive charging Really…you might as well plug it in…what’s the big deal…I would have bet that the under glass scanner would be there…how in the hell is Face recognition going to work….with Sunglasses, Beards, Hats WTF? It’s gotta be some sort of finger-print reader…HAS TO BE!!

    1. While it may have certain advantages, it certainly is not going to be as convenient in certain circumstances ie ApplePay if its relying on a face scanner. In fact even turning on will be more of a hassle i would have thought. So this will be an interesting ‘innovation’ IF true.
