“A new demo of Apple’s ARKit augmented reality reality by independent iOS developer Andrew Hart showcases how augmented reality could help take our navigation to the next level,” Dormehl writes. “The technology shows how the names of places, alongside helpful arrows and other markers could be superimposed onto our maps in real-time.”

The fantasy of ARKit is quite impressive. I’m curious to see how the reality turns out. As a person who can get lost rather easily, I welcome these types of augmented maps. I just have my doubts as to whether Apple can leverage this tech to their advantage even if they get a decent mobile device headstart. I have this gut feeling that Google and Android are going to push iOS off into a tiny corner yet again with AR.
If there’s a massive interest in augmented reality apps my own guts is telling me that it is the droid “original sin” , its open platform strategy that usually works better on some but not ALL droid smartphones, that it’s going to be the biggest obstacle for the AR droid developers….
Something that the developers for IOS devices , as always, with its “closed platform ” , won’t have.
And you can still make all sorts of “accounting gimmicks “, but in the end the highest profitability will belong to Apple and its products, regardless the overall usage of AR apps.
In other words , you will have more overall AR droid apps being used than AR IOS apps. But the most popular and profitable will be the IOS ones.
I always deemed flyover conceptually better than street view and AR will I suspect truly show why. That said as and when flyover can smoothly blend into a ground level view it will become a sensational piece of kit.
What I would like to see is Apple to allow weather radar data to be superimposed on navigation maps so those of us driving in heavy weather can make intelligent decisions regarding routing or when to pull off the road and let the shit blow over.
I hope Apple is working on CarPlay for Heads Up Display, imagine seeing the Nav, traffic and weather pushed out in your forward field of vision.
