This new Mac utility app lets users wirelessly backup their iOS devices to their Mac

“Indie developer DigiDNA has released iMazing Mini, their free macOS utility that offers automatic wireless backup of iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices,” Chris Hauk writes for MacTrast.

“The new backup solution makes ‘Time Machine’ type backups of iOS devices, allowing dozens of device backups to be stored on a hard drive without using large amounts of disk space, as a normal iTunes Backup would,” Hauk writes. “iMazing Mini performs backups of iOS devices when connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Backups can be scheduled as weekly, daily, or any other timeframe.”

“iMazing Mini is free and is available for download through the iMazing website,” Hauk writes. “The company says a Windows version will soon be available.”

  1. The good news: I can set the backup location to be a partition on my Time Capsule.

The bad news: it’s going to take 8 hours to create the first backup. I’m sure the incrementals will be much faster, and I’ll give it a week or two to see how things shake out.

Any long-time users able to share their experience?

    1. I think you misunderstood the purpose of this application.

Rather than connecting your iOS device to your Mac with the USB cable in order to back it up onto that Mac, this application (for Mac) allows you do back up your iOS device onto that Mac via WiFi. While I could possibly imagine how it might be possible to write this app to run on the iOS device, rather than the host Mac, it makes much more sense to have it running on the Mac (with much more storage space than the iOS device). That also makes it easier to back up multiple iOS devices on the same Mac. It’s easier to just install one app on the host Mac, than having to install the mobile app on each and every device that needs to be backed up.
