Macworld reviews SYC2: Powerful, convenient way to download website videos and transfer them to iOS devices

“Early last year, Softorino made downloading YouTube videos and transferring them to iOS devices as easy as a few clicks of the mouse,” J.R. Bookwalter writes for Macworld. “Despite the moral and ethical dilemmas of doing so, there was no denying how handy this little Mac utility could be.”

“A year and a half later, Softorino YouTube Converter looks positively quaint compared to the powerhouse sequel, which dramatically improves upon the original in every way,” Bookwalter writes. “It’s not perfect — and no longer free like the original was — but the convenience more than makes up for the cost.”

“The entire application boasts a 4x improvement over the original, which was already quite peppy to begin with. This is mostly noticeable when downloading larger 4K Ultra HD videos, and YouTube Converter 2 now supports VR 360 and high frame rate videos up to 60fps as well,” Bookwalter writes. “Despite the name, YouTube Converter 2 is not limited to downloading YouTube videos. At present the utility works with 53 different websites just by copying a URL, which is automatically picked up by the software and ready to download in one click. The list includes Funny or Die, Discovery (including sister sites like Animal Planet), Bandcamp, SoundCloud, and more… YouTube Converter 2 now converts downloads to ringtones as well as video or audio files. ”

  1. Videos on You Tube could easily be downloaded without a third part app by using the developer tools in Safari. A certain keystroke combo on the resource will download it. Also Parallels Tools which come along with Parallels SW for Mac will download You Tube content.

A word to readers. Beyond the other issues, DRM is coming to your web browser. The WWWC (3WC) has signed off on it. That would be Sir Tim Berners-Lee – who created the first web server on NeXT and browser- also on NeXT. Apple has made no public comment regarding DRM on Safari, but one would expect to before long.

When DRM goes into WebKit these apps should no longer work.

  2. There are other apps and even firefox plug-ins that download videos from various web sites, YouTube included, letting you select the resolution and size you want it in.. I think they are free.. not $20 after the trial…

  3. I’ve been using it for two weeks and a “killer feature” for me is the ease of converting a downloaded YouTube video soundtrack into a ringtone. Easy to download a high quality video, and then convert the audio track into a high quality ringtone. A really top software followup to Waltr and IMHO it’s worth every cent.

I just wish Josh (the developer) would slow down in his video instructions, it’s like zillion miles per hour.

      1. I’m not sure about the other downvotes, but ringtones are one of the most important personalization features for me and at least a few in my family. I never look around the restaurant when someone else’s phone rings. 😉

  4. Absolutely not! I just like the software. Just because you endorse something doesn’t mean you get a monetary gain from a product. Many people on this site love Macs and that doesn’t mean they financially benefit from them whilst others have shares in Apple and receive a financial benefit from Apple.

I neither own a part of the company nor do I work for them, I just like the software and in fact I have no financial relationship with any company either in a direct or indirect manner. I’m just a long term Mac user that highlighting a good Mac useable product.

Using your logic, maybe we should shut up about Macs as well because then you might be accused of deriving a financial benefit from Apple.

  5. Just a followup to the above. Maybe Macworld, Mac Life at alia should also stop commenting on Mac related products as well and if you go down that path no one will know anything software or hardware that we use with our Macs.

Likewise if a user likes a piece of software or hardware then they should just be mute.

As for your comment about ringtones you are entitled to your opinion but that doesn’t mean everything shares your tastes in ringtones. I just wanted a different ringtone and this piece of software provided that and much much more
