Who would Apple CEO Tim Cook choose as his successor?

“There might come a day when, heaven forbid, Apple CEO Tim Cook cannot perform his duties for some reason,” John Martellaro writes for The Mac Observer. “As a result, like every corporation, Apple has a succession plan for its CEO. What might Apple’s look like?”

“There are several criteria. A candidate must have high-level executive management experience. That means being seasoned when it comes to making major corporate decisions about product, legal, production, personnel and financial issues,” Martellaro writes. “A good CEO must also be an effective ambassador to government.”

“A desirable Apple CEO is someone who is experienced in the spirit and legacy of what the company stands for. That suggests someone, in today’s era, who has come up through the ranks within the company and, preferably, knew Steve Jobs personally,” Martellaro writes. “Finally, that candidate executive must have a certain leadership and charisma, qualities that can well convey the important Apple messages to customers.”

MacDailyNews Take: Browettize Apple, Tim!

Seriously, Angela Ahrendts (John Browett’s replacement) is “Cook’s best hire to date. Plus, if he, God forbid, ever got hit by a bus, she could slide right into the CEO position. Of that, we have no doubt. Ahrendts’ track record is stellar. Having two world-class CEOs in the executive suite should give Apple shareholders a strong sense of security. Just as Jobs had Cook, Cook has Ahrendts.” – MacDailyNews, September 10, 2015

    1. I’m thinking the choice would probably be more like director John Waters. Flamboyant and an activist–keeping it in the family. Marrying Apple w/ kitschy entertainment, but having no clue regarding product imagination and marketing. Every device will be (RED) branded and biodegradable within 12 months.

      1. Following your interesting meme another possibility is actor Clint Eastwood invoking the “Dirty Harry” mantra.

“But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, do you feel lucky?” Well, do you Apple?

Shooting holes in the limping along LONG IN THE TOOTH neglected trashcan MacPro would be preferable to sending a neglected horse to the glue factory.

Anti-second amendment Libtards with no sense of humor about to condemn in 3… 2… 1…

      1. Whooosh!…the sound of the last shreds of your credibility leaving the room. Not that an infantilised drool covered 14 year old moron had much anyway. You and your kind included.

        1. As you correctly point out — it is repeatedly amazing how the so called party of peace, love, diversity and tolerance spew the most HATE. And they just don’t see it … 🤔

    1. Apple is not interested in getting out of the consumer electronics business. Trump makes his money by licensing his name, as if it has some sort of magical power. He would license his name to a toilet to make money.

As far as MAGA, I have seen no signs that Trump has made any progress in improving this country. In fact, I have seen many signs to the contrary. Your partisan take is ridiculous.

      1. In order to see something, you first have to open your eyes.

The U.S. economy added 220,000 jobs in June, the best showing since February and well above analysts’ expectations of 174,000.

The Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics also said the number of employed Americans — which set records in February, March and April — set another record in June, at 153,168,000 employed.

The June unemployment rate stands at 4.4 percent, which is near historic lows.

        1. The unemployment/jobs numbers are good. But before you give Trump too much credit. Keep in mind…

You’re neglecting the fact that unemployment has been on a downward trend for a long time now. It (U3) actually ticked up .1 since May. In terms of jobs added, there’s been 80,000 fewer jobs added in the first 6 months of 2017 as compared to the last 6 months of 2016.

How many jobs is 80,00? That’s 4,000 more than the entire coal industry in the U.S..

Trump’s best showing for jobs added is 232,000 for the month of Feb. Obama’s best showing is 358,000.

          Sources… straight from Trump’s government:

          https://data.bls.gov/timeseries/CES0000000001?output_view=net_1mth

I’ll still give Trump credit for not breaking the downward trend of unemployment, but if these numbers go up by 2020, will you remember that this is something you hold the President accountable for?

      2. “As far as MAGA, I have seen no signs that Trump has made any progress in improving this country. In fact, I have seen many signs to the contrary.”

        Name one.

And when you are done, breathlessly waiting for your reply to Firsty’s list of positive numbers …

  1. Apple buys Tesla and SpaceX and names Elon Musk CEO. Need to have a visionary for the next CEO. Tim and Angela are great managers, but I think Apple needs someone who will start pushing the boundaries again.

    1. Trouble is it would be the toss of a. Ion as to whether it would be the boundaries of genius or utter excruciating disaster with Campus 2 sold off to Ikea.

    2. I like Elon, but I don’t think that buying Tesla would be a great deal for Apple. It would, however, probably be a great deal for Elon seeing that other car companies are beginning to cut into his electric car niche. Lets see how the new lower cost Tesla Model 3 does, first.

SpaceX is doing great. But I am not sure how SpaceX and Apple tie together.

    3. Apple can’t even keep its Airport (or several other popular products) updated. What makes you think Apple could possibly have the focus to make anything that travels out of Earth’s atmosphere? If it isn’t forcing people to rent iCloud server space, Timmy doesn’t want to do it.

  2. OMG MDN has lost the plot big time here. Angela is the biggest do nothing hire and over priced hire Apple has ever made. Her biggest accomplishments are a) not sucking as much as Browett (tim’s first loser pick), b) planting trees in apple store. Let me get this straight, you get credit for not messing up the highest per square foot money makers in retail, and now that makes her a tech visionary.

You guys are lunatics. The only one with any tech vision that is still at the company is Craig Federighi. And frankly I would prefer crazy eye scott farstall.

Plastic man Phill Shiller totally lives up to his name and is apple’s version of ballmer IMO. And Jeff Williams, who is nice, having a background at IBM, actually makes walking-human-ambian Tim Cook look like a visionary personality dynamo.

MDN is disturbingly negligent and brain damaged with this opinion. IMO

    1. √ Craig Federighi
He’s the techie with excellent presentation skills. Apple requires a techno in charge. Anyone considering a marketing exec in charge is out of their minds, or hates Apple.

Whether Craig Federighi wants to deal with the CEO level executive stuff, no idea.

      1. Do a web search on my term “Marketing-As-Management” for plentiful lectures on exactly how and why putting a marketing exec in charge of a company is an excellent way to KILL IT. Don’t do it. That’s bad.
        💣💥💀⚰

        1. You have hit on something no one else has to date. Bravo. 👏🏻

          e·nig·ma
          iˈniɡmə/
          noun
          1. a person or thing that is mysterious, puzzling, or difficult to understand.

“I get up, I get down.
I get up, I get down.”

          — Yes, Close to the Edge, Sept. 13, 1972

    2. Sir Jony Ives? Kidding of course. He is an exact fit of the description you made on Angela.
In the current brass lines, Craig Federighi is the only one I can think of with great tech knowledge, great personality and mandatory hairdo. Don’t worry about supply chain management. Anyone with greed can squeeze suppliers and let them do what you want.
Yes, Elon Mask is far more fit to Apple than Cook, but he is a bit on wild side, although he dreams, conceives and actually execute with some results. Apple’s cash coffer is big enough now to take his wild adventure. You need only one big hit (or two).

But seriously, I like to see Scott Forstall back. His firing created a bad and probably unfair image of him. But my theory is, when Jobs appointed Cook as the next CEO, he was not expecting Cook to be a visionary or innovative CEO. Jobs just wanted Apple to be in a steady hand to make the company financially stable for several years until it is solidly on its feet, which Cook has accomplished. I cannot think that Jobs was expecting Cook to exercise any tech imagination to be innovative.
After watching the recent interview of Forstall, I could not escape the thought that Jobs was thinking of Forestall as the CEO of true Apple, but only after Cook, and may even told Scott something on his death bed. Jobs and Forstall sounded like very very close and admiring and caring each other and Jobs seems to be keenly aware of Forstall’s talent. Unfortunately, Forstall probably (and unconsciously) threatened Cook’s position, which resulted in such a swift firing of him. Firing Scott was one of the first jobs Cook did.

      1. Well said.

“Firing Scott was one of the first jobs Cook did.”

And the first of his major mistakes. Scott would get it done and turn Apple magical again (MAppleGA) … 😉

  3. Apple doesn’t need a personality to excite the masses during twice a year events, it needs a product guy with complex supply chain and human resource management experience.

The only candidate that fits that mold is Jeff Williams. I don’t know enough about Eddy Cue’s credentials, Craig Federighi. Angela Ahrendts is a brilliant retail leader, but no supply chain/product experience. Shiller’s strength is marketing/sales, not the best background for a product development company.

      1. Listening to Williams is more painful than watching paint dry. Zero passion. Less than convincing and forthright answers. You just get the feeling he doesn’t want you to know anything behind the magic curtain. Which is a problem because if you never give a straight answer, idiots on the internet will make up stuff for you

        1. “Listening to Williams is more painful than watching paint dry. Zero passion.”

That’s easy since you are describing the same mannerisms of timid Tim. What do you expect — a lieutenant that can think for himself and push back? We all know what happened to Scott Forstall immediately when Tim took over.

“Less than convincing and forthright answers.”

Those words should be framed and hung over William’s desk. Early in the video Uncle Walt presses Jeff THREE times to explain why Apple does not release watch sales numbers.

Walt said something like you have done that in the past with other products and services saying we have reached the one million milestone with pre-orders or sales, on this or that product. Why not the watch?

THREE times Jeff dodged the question after being pressed for a DIRECT ANSWER. Instead of answering the question Jeff basically sounded like a Cook lapdog simply saying we decided not to release sales numbers early on. That’s it?

How about the two answers everyone (Apple Borg fanbois excluded) are waiting to hear:

          1. How many Apple watches have you sold?
          2. Why not explain honestly your rationale behind hiding the numbers not previously done with any OTHER product?

Bottom line: Timid Tim who is as emotionless, non-inspiring, passionless and austere flat as iOS will certainly appoint someone in the same mold.

Unlike Steve who had the courage to appoint someone totally unlike himself. I have never been able to figure that one out and possibly Steve’s greatest mystery executive decision. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

So, two choices obviously would be fashionista Tim hire Angela with no real substantial tech experience. Or, the same dark shirt uniform open collar as his boss, answerless Jeff, keeping watch numbers SECRET — the FIRST new product released under Cook. That should tell you SOMETHING.

The outer limits option: Tech genius under Steve at NEXT and Apple, bring back Sir Scott Forstall !!! … 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

        2. Ahrendts always gets thumbs down from this gallery of thumb suckers because of her disqualifying femaleness and supposedly damning evidence of “what has she done? Nothing” which is total BS — she’s run retail for years now, without the controversy of Browett, and retail is thriving, if numbers have any damn meaning. Some dismiss her as an ingénue but it takes a hard-headed, cold-blooded bitch to turn around a foundering multinational like Burberry. That doesn’t happen all by itself, by magic. It takes vision and strong leadership.

The “stage presence” accusation is more BS. Sure, folks like a good show, but what they like better is great products that they want to buy, and a good return on their investment in tech stocks.

It looked to me like Tim Cook persuaded her, or bribed her or both, to come to Apple, after a successful collaboration. He may not have thought about her replacing him as CEO then, but he might be thinking that now. A guy can take only so many arrows before he decides it isn’t worth it any more.

        3. Her gender is irrelevant, but her experience and qualifications are ALL that matters for Tech Titan Apple.

Angie has ZERO TECH CHOPS and would not know the difference between SSD and Kirby Lake processors. A highly-hyped red carpet diversity and fashionista hire.

          Get a grip … 🤔

        4. Funny, I thought the job of a CEO was to make intelligent decisions for the enterprise, keeping in mind its stated core mission whilst satisfying the requirements of stakeholders. I guess I was too “old school” in my understanding. It seems the new understanding is that the job of the CEO is to resurrect Steve Jobs, to a close approximation.

        5. I didn’t actually reference or think of Steve Jobs. I thought instead about how Apple the business succeeds versus fails. My view is from an historical perspective.

Nonetheless, despite his uniqueness, having a disruptive, inventive, pestering, wise and persistent Steve Jobs-esque CEO would be great! But he was unique and is, IMHO, irreplaceable.

I continue to place my interest in Craig Federighi, who is of course no Steve Jobs.

        6. “Nonetheless, despite his uniqueness, having a disruptive, inventive, pestering, wise and persistent Steve Jobs-esque CEO would be great!”

          Precisely, DC! 👏🏻

        7. “It seems the new understanding is that the job of the CEO is to resurrect Steve Jobs, to a close approximation.”

No post I have read is calling for resurrecting Steve. May he rest in peace.

What I and dozens of others have been saying for YEARS now is tech experience matters as CEO of Apple. The only way to make the magic and bring it back. Unlike the cardboard cutout presentations constantly bragging about sales and market share numbers we are all subjected to. I seem to recall a post or two from you in the past also advocating support for Scott.

Not CEOS picked because of diversity, political appointees or Wall Street lapdogs. Is that clear enough for you? 😉

    1. Right, because things were so bad when we had Steve Jobs excite the masses and have some vision. And things go so much better with we-dont-need-no-stinking-macs human-walking-ambian and master of the supply chain Tim Cook.

If you didn’t see the dripping sarcasm above, it’s only because it’s so thick it might be drown over.

        1. Yea because “the master of the supply chain” not updating the Mac Pro for over 4 years and ignoring other macs for years is somehow totally made right when an update is finally made years late…

  4. I don’t read much on Angela. She may have reached her peak level but as a decorator.

Scott Forstall has roots in NeXT. He might be able to mellow out should he return just as Jobs mellowed out upon his return to lead Apple to exceptional accomplishments.

Johnny would quit, however, but we could retun to fun and useful skewomorphism and tactile improvements on the too flat desktop keyboard where I have to correct my typing to many times.

    MITA (Make iPhones Thick Again)

  5. I vote for Jon Ives – Apple needs a design guy at the top. Someone who is knows and loves design and is willing to push an “it just works” ethos. Cook’s strength isn’t design and Apple is suffering for it.

  6. Angela’s track record is nonexistent. Wtf, mdn???
We all know that you’ve been visualizing her on a stupid red rubber ball, but that is not the qualification of a ceo.

  7. I suspect that the legacy of Tim Cook will be similar to John Sculley, perhaps not quite that bad. After Cook, Schiller will cause proliferation of options like the Proforma era because he enthusiastically tries to satisfy “every price point”. Hopefully, another infusion will reoccur after that, bringing Forstall back to be the second coming of Jobs to save Apple and return it to technological triumphs rather than just monetarily successful.

    1. we are anxiously waiting for the return of a tech leader GIANT who puts true innovation over incremental upgrades, puts true unexpected magic over staged staid performances, puts product inventory delivery at launch over delays malaise, puts all people over divisive identity politics, puts updating pro products over beancounter profits, puts people over Wall Street. a tech leader giant who is not riding on a past favorable appointment mostly focused now on the bottom line. a tech leader giant who talks the talk and walks the walk. we are waiting for the second coming of Jobs: Sir Scott Forstall !!! 🙏🏻 🙏🏻 🙏🏻 🙏🏻 🙏🏻
