3 stunning numbers that reveal how huge Apple’s iPhone business has become

“The true extent to which Apple has become an iPhone company can only be appreciated when you look at key statistics about the game-changing device,” Natalie Walters reports for TheStreet.

“From the launch of the first iPhone in June 2007 to mostly ecstatic reviews to now, Apple has sold over 1 billion iPhones. In addition, the iPhone makes up about 44% of the smartphone market in the U.S., where users spend up to 5 hours per day on their mobile devices. ,” Walters reports. “An April 2017 survey from Morgan Stanley that showed about 92% of iPhone owners say they are ‘somewhat likely’ or ‘extremely likely’ to upgrade their device in the next year.”

• 1.2 billion iPhones have been sold since 1997
• The iPhone has brought in 3/4 of a trillion dollars in revenue
• There are an estimated 715 million iPhone users worldwide

        1. As was my response, poor editorial control.

It should have read, “An obvious example of poor editorial control at The Street.”

Every once in a while, I really wish MDN allowed one to edit a response, at least ones that have not been commented upon.

  1. All that profit share and yet every day I read articles about the imminent collapse of Apple’s iPhone business and how overvalued the stock is. Something absolutely doesn’t add up. Looking at Apple’s P/E seems to tell the story that the company isn’t valued as high as most major tech stocks are, especially Microsoft. Whatever Apple is doing wrong, I sure hope Tim Cook figures out how to correct it. I’m really hoping that ARKit is going to produce some fantastic AR apps which might help to drive future iPhone sales. Please don’t let AR on Apple devices become like Alphabet’s Google Glass.

  2. Here is a delightful quote from an article from yesterday. It seems that Dvorak missed it slightly. On the other hand, could anyone have foreseen that the iPhone would change so much in the world?

“• “Apple should pull the plug on the iPhone… What Apple risks here is its reputation as a hot company that can do no wrong. If it’s smart it will call the iPhone a ‘reference design’ and pass it to some suckers to build with someone else’s marketing budget. Then it can wash its hands of any marketplace failures… Otherwise I’d advise people to cover their eyes. You are not going to like what you’ll see.” – John C. Dvorak, Bloated Gas Bag, March 28, 2007”
