Macworld reviews Apple’s new Kaby Lake iMac: ‘Now’s the time to do some shopping’

“Apple has finally updated the iMac, so if you’re in the market for a new computer, now’s the time to do some shopping,” Roman Loyola writes for Macworld. “In this review, I take a close look at the high-end 21.5-inch iMac with a 3.4GHz Core i5 Kaby Lake processor, which sells for $1,499.”

“The 21.5-inch Macs have dual-core Core i5 Kaby Lake processors, while the 27-inch iMacs have quad-core Core i5s. (Apple offers customization options to a Core i7 processor in some models.) The processor in our $1,499 iMac review unit is clocked at 3.4GHz, and it has Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz,” Loyola writes. “Apple also improved the graphics hardware. The $1,499 iMac in this review has a 4GB Radeon Pro 560, and all of the new iMacs except for the $1,099 entry-level model now use Radeon Pro graphics. The 2015 21.5-inch iMacs used Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200, while the older 27-inch models used older Radeon cards. The new $1,099 iMac uses Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640.”

“Apple updated the iMac screen with one that the company says is 43 percent brighter (it’s rated at 500 nits). It’s certainly noticeable to me. Colors are vibrant, and the details are sharp,” Loyola writes. “In all, the 2017 iMac continues the excellence that we’ve come to associate with the iMac.”

  1. Since I already have a perfectly good LCD cinema display and my 2010 Mac Pro is chugging along just fine, Apple still has no good upgrade path for me.

Anyone upgrading by throwing out (hopefully selling or recycling) old iMacs with perfectly good displays, wishing they didn’t have to buy a whole new all-in-one?

    1. If you “sell” your old iMac how is that “throwing it away”? Now try selling your Windows PC, no one wants one of those.

How on earth is an iMAC more powerful than your old Mac Pro with a screen having way more resolution and brightness and all of that in the space less than your cinema screen “not a good upgrade path”?

    2. New 21″ iMac only provides option for 1TB storage.
My 2009 unit has 2TB fusion drive, I’m using about 1.25 TB of storage, nice backward compatibility for new hardware.

Just dumb not providing storage options > 1TB

  2. Just picked up a 4.2 Ghz i7 Kaby lake processor, 32GB 2133 MHz Ram, extremely high end Asus pro gaming mobo, and a 8 pipe vapor chamber CPU cooling system, already have a NVidia Gtx 980 4Gb vid card. Grand total? A little over $900. And I upgraded this from a lower spec components Try that Apple for that price point. Oh wait, you cant upgrade your iMac or the none existent Mac Pro. Wow. Wait and hope some more suckers.

    1. So $900 NOT including a 27 inch 5k monitor or an operating system. No iMovie, no GarageBand, no Pages, no Photoes, no keynote, no Numbers. And no (real) warranties or support. OOOOOOOK then, I’ll just rush out and buy ten……NOT! Good luck selling that shit after six years. I sold my iMac after 6 years of use for $1300. Original cost was around $2600.
.And, oh yeah, …….” an 8 pipe vapour chamber cooling system”. How quaint!

      What a nut job!!!
