Apple’s next-gen iPhone will likely – finally – have a completely new design

“After three years and three phones, it seems that the iPhone is finally getting a facelift,” Mike Murphy writes for Quartz.

“Recent reports form Forbes and Apple blog 9to5Mac suggest that the next iPhone, likely called the iPhone 8 (or perhaps the iPhone X), will feature a smaller body than its predecessors, but a far larger screen,” Murphy writes. “A video of a purported dummy version of the phone, shared with 9to5Mac and in line earlier leaks, hint that it will have two rear-facing cameras (arranged vertically instead of horizontally as they are on the iPhone 7 Plus) and no home button or fingerprint sensors.”

“It seems the new phone will have a larger screen, but in a smaller package,” Murphy writes. “All of these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt — they’re just that, rumors. But Apple would likely be looking to produce a show-stopping device for this year…”

MacDailyNews Take: It’s been a long time, in tech terms, since the current design debuted with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus on September 19, 2014. Three generations of iPhones looking pretty much the same is too long (at least our current iPhone 7 Plus units in Jet Black stand apart somewhat).

  1. Nothingtoo wrong with the current design… imho

One model and one color of iPhone X as a 1year special edition, 512GB and AirPods included, maybe a ceramic Edition model

Let the 7S/7SPlus arrive as expected

    Too many models right now…

    1. Oh I’m not a fan of the current design at all: flimsy, fragile, bendable, easier to break.

Whatever form the next design, I think most users would agree: sick to death of thinner devices. Keep the thickness or add a little more and stuff in a bigger battery!

  2. I am in Europe at the moment where Apple’s new products produce more yawns than interest. Apple’s apps just don’t work very well here. Apple Maps is worse than useless for instance. And the prices are crazy.

Europe is a big market. But it’s mostly android.

Part of the reason is the European attitude. Americans are show-offs. Materialistic. Europeans not so much.

And you will never see an Apple Watch in the wild in Europe.

    1. Oh yeah, Europeans are so humble and live off the land. Is that the reason why they build cheap rolls royces, maseratis, bmw’s, ferraries, mercedes … ? and they wear cheap Prada, St laurent, Gucci, Et al … ? And let’s not forget the cheap rolexes, tag hauers, patek philippes ….Materialistic and show off those Europeans? No way José!

      1. And I’d be lost without my Louis Vuitton tote. Quality and a timeless style yield a healthy ROI for the frugal but fashion-conscious, and extra design points for artfully disguising one’s pack-rat tendencies. Even a gently used model is double-take pricey but the TCO is unbeatable.

    2. What a typical Euro trash attitude. Socialism, unchecked immigration leading to terrorism (shocking) and jealousy of the USA runs rampid. Oh, but when Europe finds their ass in a sling and needs our military, suddenly they are singing God Bless America.

  3. The best looking iPhone to date, in my opinion – ok? was the first, original iPhone. I was so dammed proud to show it off to anybody. That’s the phone design that gets ripped off over and over by other manufacturers.

  4. My supplier friend who is working with parts that end up in Apple products has me thinking that most of the leaked photos are actually iPhone 7S and there is a separate iPhone AR model that nobody has seen. AR is the reason why the cameras are turned sideways. There is also something weird about the new model design, either it is a two piece phone where display can be detached or it’s a laptop style. Seems like the display is wirelessly powered too, there is hardly any battery in it. It doesn’t make much sense if you think it’s a touch based phone. Could it be that there is “display only” accessory?

      1. It’s just that with iPhone AR you could shoot 3D video in landscape mode or do some 3D interactive stuff, and it would matter if you used with the “toaster”.

        1. If you are talking about creating stereograms I suppose the orientation of the cameras would make a difference. However no flagship smartpphone by any company including Apple can take those types of pictures. AR uses one camera for image and the other to determine depth. The software compensates for the orientation of the camera to perform AR so there is no reason one orientation is more ‘beneficial’ to AR than the other.

  5. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Still, iPhone 8 will be playing catch-up with Android screens (which have long been edge-to-edge; they look REALLY nice).

Of course, I’m staying with iPhone even if they make a new one ever again…
