“Microsoft shipped a new edition of Windows 10 last week, preinstalled on its… new Surface Laptop,” Ed Bott writes for ZDNet. “How did reviewers react to Windows 10 S? Spoiler alert: They hated it. They really, really hated it.”
“Microsoft debuted its first true laptop last week,” Bott writes. “Microsoft chose to debut a new edition of Windows with the Surface Laptop, and the same reviewers who loved its elegant design and performance were almost uniformly scathing in their rejection of the brand-new Windows 10 S.”
“And rightly so,” Bott writes. “Whoever made the decision to debut Windows 10 S on this particular piece of hardware was not thinking clearly.”

Bott writes, “I can certainly envision customers who would benefit from a laptop running Windows 10 S. I’d love to hand it to a nontechnical user who just wants to use Office, browse the web, and never have to worry about browser hijackers and ransomware.”
MacDailyNews Take: Yeah. Those customers are called iPad owners. The smart ones, that is.
Bott writes, “But the idea that you’re going to get through four years of college without ever being asked to install a conventional Windows desktop app is laughable.”

MacDailyNews Take: Smart college students use Macs. That way they can run the world’s most advanced operating system and also, if they’re forced to, slum it with Windows, too.
All of Microsoft’s hardware is handicapped out of the box and can only run a subset of that software that any Mac can run. Only the morbidly ignorant would choose to greatly limit themselves with non-Apple laptops and/or tablets.
The fact that Apple’s offerings can run macOS and also slum it with Windows if need be – giving users two (or, with Linux, etc., more than two) computers for the price of one – is something Microsoft cannot match, especially with the Surface Laptop shipping with the restricted “Windows S,” requiring an extra expenditure of $50 just to be stuck with standard-issue Windows and all of its inherent issues.

It is a very delicate line. Apple has Macs (desktop and portable), with OS X. Then there are iPads, with iOS. Apple has defined fairly well which one are for what, and there is very little confusion what you can or can’t do on iOS (or Mac).
Microsoft tried to sell iOS on a full laptop. On top of that, their iOS has a tiny fraction of useful apps, compared to the iOS App Store (a rounding error, actually). And they tried to sell this at a price of a full pro laptop (that compares with MBP). While hobbling it with a profoundly inferior version of iOS.
The whole launch looks as if the decision was made by accountants: “Why don’t we take the hardware that got such rave reviews and launch our low-end mobile version of Windows on it? What’s not to like? We know they loved the laptop, and if we promote the ease of use and security of the mobile OS, we can sell boatloads!”
Whatever happened to that Stephen Sinofski idiot? Did Microsoft investors ever get any of the $20 billion he and Ballmer squandered back?
He became a Mac 🖥 zealot and saw the light. He seemed pretty confused during and after his Microsoft tenure, but after leaving, he slowly began to appreciate Apple. Now, if you read his WWDC review out last week, he clearly admires Apple.
If you doing Windows, gotta get the pro or enterprise version.

Microsoft should just admit it – the current version of Windows 10 would have been too over bloated for one of their stripped down PC computers that they had to basically strip everything out to even make it work, and they named it Windows 10 S for STRIPPED DOWN TO NOTHING.

Lol. In case you icrap drones forget. Microsoft owns the pc world (91.6% market share… http://marketshare.hitlink.com). I guess if you like to over pay for a computer that is basically a glorified browser box, all desktop/ laptop software is built for Windows. Show me a piece of software that only runs on a Mac that’s not from apple and you have shown me a dead company. Since jobs passed away apple has suffered the same fate that microsoft suffered when gates retired. The fact of the matter is apple is a one trick pony that has lost it’s cool. Microsoft has stole n their thunder. Apple has a long history of coming up short especially pre-jobs 2.0. You icrap drones are living in 2007. It’s Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Facebook’s world now. Deal with it or get left behind. The icrap 8 is nothing new that Samsung and other android vendors haven’t already created. A slow death is still a death. Maybe apple will figure this out like microsoft did when it dumped Balmer. It all depends on what you want. What you are looking for.
Fortunately, for all systems, you can settle for Linux, if you like. But it’s not the same.
I like Macs, because I can do all of the above without mic compromise. However you do pay more. It depends on what you want again.
The only problem with Apple, and this is good for owners, they hold their price too damn well. You can’t get a refurb for $400 off. You won’t typically find one for under $900/$800.
For Windows machines, you can get a Kaby Lake Core i7-7500U, 16GB RAM and 246GB SSD, for under $800, for HP and the like. Not saying it’s better hardware, just acceptable for a lower entry cost. Only on refurb, and only because the high return rate and high availability.
Again, not being judgemental. I feel the rhetoric here tends ignores the obvious.
