$10 accessory makes Apple’s AirPods almost perfect

“I have one small problem with the AirPods: They don’t stay in my ears super securely,” David Carnoy writes for CNET. “I can walk around with them fine, but if I run to catch a train in the subway–or just run with them in general — I feel them start to slip out and have to slow down. Once, I caught one bud as it fell out of my ear.”

“Some people I know can run with their AirPods — their ears are the right shape, the perfect AirPodian receptacles, God bless them,” Carnoy writes. “And the sweat-resistant AirPods are good to run with. Not only are they very light but their open design allows you to hear oncoming traffic.”

Now, “silicone cover options have grown to include ones like those from EarBuddyz that feature an integrated earhook or ‘sports fin.’ Other brands, such as Spigen and Earhoox make similar products that work with both EarPods and AirPods.”

“They all cost around $10 for two sets of hooks. I’ve been using a set of the EarBuddyz and now have no problem running with the AirPods,” Carnoy writes. “The only problem–and it’s a big one–is that you have to take the earhooks off to get the AirPods back in their beautiful little dental-floss sized charging capsule.”

MacDailyNews Take: We’re lucky – Apple’s AirPods fit in our ears and don’t fall out while running – even while sprinting during intervals, box-jumping, and more. As Carnoy writes, a protective case for the AirPods case with a place to store the silicon covers/fins would be perfect for those who need a bit extra to keep AirPods securely in their ears.

  1. This accessory is brilliant. If Apple hard plastic AirPods or regular earbuds fit you perfectly, then hats off to you. But no matter how good an in-ear headset is, the fit and ability to maintain optimal position, is different for everyone. I’ve found that those little ear hooks go a long way in keeping the earbud in the right position. And silicone softly provides a good seal to reduce ambient sound. I don’t have AirPods, but if I did I’d be jumping all over these.

    1. Do they still fit in the case, and do they interfere with microphones? With all the self-conscious people out there worried about how AirPods look, adding a pink foam part probably won’t appeal to them.

      1. I personally want to put spiral stripes on my AirPods to make them look like candy canes. Fashion statement!

Yes, if you shove the AirPods into the case, the foam will collapse. But you can easily take the foam off then on again. The top of the charging case doesn’t quite close with the foam on.

As for my choosing red foam, again it’s more fun than white or black. Think of them as a (PRODUCT)RED™ statement. 😉

        1. I wonder if Apple considered adding a little extra space in the case to allow 3-rd party Airpod covers. I assume they didn’t want people f-ing with their aesthetic and highlighting a drawback of the product, so they didn’t. Since they’re held in with magnets they could have allowed for a bit more space.

    1. Not everyone has the same ear shape. I’m lucky that I can use them by themselves and they stay put. But I know people who have trouble keeping them in. It’s not a matter of size of the ears. It’s the geometry of the ear.

  2. I have a pair of these and they make a big difference. AirPods fit nicely in my ears during regular activity but have slipped out when exercising. These make them rock solid. Of course you have to remove them to dock the Pods in their case but it’s a small price to pay.

Something this useful for $10? What’s everyone complaining about. Cheap enough to give a try. Plus you get 2 sizes so you could give one away.

  3. Funny story– an AirPod dropped out of my ear as I walked home from the grocery. Panic! I retraced my steps to no avail. Found it with “find my AirPods” embedded in the bouquet of tulips I had purchased and put in a vase, just above the water line. Dropped out twice so far– I’m worried enough to bite on these.
