“We have known for a long time that Apple is working on an autonomous car project,” Chris O’Brien writes for VentureBeat. “But it was still remarkable to hear Apple CEO Tim Cook confirm the news in a public interview.”
“‘We’re focusing on autonomous systems,’ Cook said in a Bloomberg Television appearance on June 5. ‘It’s a core technology that we view as very important.’ He went on to call it ‘the mother of all AI projects’ and added that it’s ‘probably one of the most difficult AI projects to work on,’ O’Brien writes. “In this case, Cook managed to say something without really saying much.”
“We knew, via patents and regulatory filings and press reports, that Apple had some kind of AV project cooking,” O’Brien writes. “‘There is a major disruption looming there,’ Cook said. ‘You’ve got kind of three vectors of change happening generally in the same time frame.’ Beyond that, Cook didn’t make any great revelations.”

Apple doesn’t have Elon Musk, so Apple’s autonomous car project will be considered a failure from the start. So far, Apple’s ambitions aren’t even up to Google’s autonomous car moonshot project. I believe I’d seen an earlier article saying Apple couldn’t catch up with driverless cars because it didn’t have enough data. I suppose the author forgot Apple had partnered up with China’s Didi Chuxing car-sharing company which is currently working towards self-driving cars with Apple’s funding.
As usual, Apple will be quickly dismissed as having any chances in the autonomous car market. Either Apple comes out with a highly profitable car business or Apple becomes doomed once again. It appears as though Tesla already has a monopoly on electric cars and maybe even autonomous cars, too. Smaller companies are easily running circles around Apple and Wall Street is completely disappointed in Apple for not being able to diversify their business.
Google canceled their project Waymo.
Not-so-magificent Elon: He maybe a smart dude, but in-spite of all Tesla’s hoopla, as a business, it’s worlds apart from one Apple would (want to) model. Tesla is proud to have a qrt when a profit is made and “meager” often characterizes. Although I think Tesla’s aesthetics are suberb, take away the subsidies and credits and it’s vapor. I think Apple will succeed, if a car, or a system is taken to market.
