6 things I love about macOS High Sierra (so far)

“I’ve had a few days to play around with macOS High Sierra and have already fallen head-over-heals [sic] for a couple new features,” Lory Gil writes for iMore.

“Every time Apple updates its Mac operating system, some new features get added that completely change the way I use my computer,” Gil writes. “macOS High Sierra is a smaller update, but that doesn’t mean its’ new features are any less awesome.”

Gil writes, “Here are a few of the big little changes Apple has made to macOS that I’m already wondering how I ever lived without.”

MacDailyNews Take: Messages in iCloud is really useful improvement, but it’s the unseen, very powerful Apple File System that’s High Sierra’s biggest improvement.

  1. I agree that APFS is the absolute best feature of High Sierra. I converted my Apple 512GB SSD to APFS during the install process. It took less that 5 minutes to make the upgrade to APFS. Multi Gigabyte Directory copies are darn near instantaneous. Much appreciated, Apple.

    1. Of course MultiGigabyte directory copies are fast. BECAUSE THE APFS DOESN’T REALLY MAKE COPIES. Just over glorified symbolic links with change info on top. If you corrupt an original file you’ve screwed up the copy as well. The only way to make a copy that is really a copy is to copy to another file system then copy back, or save as a new file.

  2. Apple’s Mail compaction sounds good (possibly back to APFS on the credit) and I do like Messages getting better.

AutoPlay ad blocking sounds great, but what’s the point of Safari features if it remains a huge CPU and Memory hog that blows my fans every time I have 20+ tabs open?

Apple could score a lot of points if they can find ways to give us more privacy without losing smooth syncing amongst all devices.
