“Most of Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is skewed heavily toward the legions of developers who create software and hardware for the Mac and iOS ecosystems, as you would expect,” Jeff Carlson reports for The Seattle Times. “The sessions are satisfyingly technical, the conversations wide-ranging and the details are tailored for its nerdy (I say as a compliment) audience.”
“But even compared to previous WWDC events, the keynote and news for this year’s show had an overt appeal to developers: Apple is working hard to make you happy,” Carlson reports. “And for Apple, that means hardware.”
“Part of Apple’s response was to roll out updates to the iMac and MacBook Pro, each with faster Intel ‘Kaby Lake’ processors and greater graphics-processing power,” Carlson reports. “The bigger hardware news, though, isn’t coming until December. Apple offered a sneak preview of the new iMac Pro, a space-gray colored, all-in-one that will put all of the company’s other Macs to shame.”
Carlson reports, “Running Intel Xeon processors in 8-, 10-, or 18-core configurations, the iMac Pro will be capable of up to 22 teraflops of performance power.”

The original iPhone had to be announced early because Jobs knew once it was submitted to the FCC for pre-production approval (as all phones need to be) it would have leaked. HE wanted to present it.
6 months for the iMacPro and over a year for the MacPro – After ignoring the Pro market for years, Apple is reduced to utilizing Microsoft tactics while it tries to pull its head out of wherever it has been.
Personally I think they have spent the last two years picking out their new offices in the “space ship” and designing cold door knobs & graphics for the bathrooms.

You do understand that today’s weather models are running on machines that do 10s of thousands of teraflops real world performance not just 22 teraflops theoretical peak performance, don’t you? And, those machines don’t try to simulate the entire planet’s weather either. Further, they don’t do it in real-time.
Real world peak performance of the maxed out iMac Pro is likely to be on the order of half or less of that theoretical peak performance. Simulations highly tuned to the specific configuration of the maxed out iMac Pro might get 80% of so of that theoretical performance, but very few people are going to do that much tweaking and optimizing for a desktop machine.
The iMac Pro will be a beast of a machine when it finally ships, but MDN’s hyperbole is unwarranted.

Truth be told this iMac Pro would probably suit me for a year or two but the right model would still cost around $7,000 I would imagine and be stuck as far as upgrades and buying external GPU TB3 boxes. My opinion is it would have been better to have a new upgradeable Mac Pro right now than an iMac Pro. It’s the Mac Pro squeaky wheel that needs the most oil right now.
The things we do and wait for – for macOS love.
At least we know the iMac Pro will have this going for it:
– Upgradable RAM
– Upgradable CPU (as guestimated by iFixIt) (Hello Other World Computing!)
– Access to external GPUs (as per next spring, so the story goes, using an upgrade to macOS 10.13. This was announced at WWDC).

I believe that the Mac pros price is going to start where the high-end of the iMac Pro will end. It will be a very powerful machine, but it will also be a very expensive machine. The higher you go, the smaller the potential market you’re aiming for.
So, shipping the iMac Pro first means they’ll be shipping something that’s going to sell and pretty decent numbers. A lot of pros on the fence may realize that, while they like the idea of a Mac pro, and they’re not going to be able to swallow that price.
In my opinion Apple is not going to leave a 2k market gap from a top regular iMac at around 3-4K and the next entry iMac Pro at 5K. My guess is the “modular” Mac Pro will have to fill a Pro starting point and also the ultimate level Mac.
Well since the Mac Pro won’t have a monitor and be “modular” I suspect the price won’t be quite as high actually, but the more options and modules you stack up the price surely will as well. We’ll have to wait and see. The new iMac Pro will take take care of a lot more pros and would me too – temporarily. Remember the iMac Pro only STARTS @ $4,999. And we will see just how upgradeable Apple makes the Mac Pro to make it worth it but surely they understand the pro requirements NOW and won’t do anything trashcan cute the next time.
