Dow hits all-time high as fired FBI director Comey testifies before U.S. Senate committee

“While many investors on Thursday were laser-focused on fired FBI Director James Comey’s testimony before the Senate intelligence committee, the U.S. stock market indices rose; the Dow rose to an all-time high, and the S&P 500 was in striking distance of its all-time high,” Rebecca Ungarino reports for CNBC. “Some say the market could be primed for a significant rally.”

“In a Thursday morning note to clients, Raymond James chief investment strategist Jeffrey Saut wrote that unless there is some kind of ‘headline shock’ in the forthcoming trading sessions, ‘we think the downside is contained and that the stage is being set for another leg to the upside,'” Ungarino reports.

“Political tension will likely continue as a ‘cloud’ over Washington, and this is a bigger problem than many people realize, wrote Miller Tabak equity strategist Matt Maley in a note to clients Thursday morning,” Ungarino reports. “‘Unless Comey drops a complete bomb shell … or crude oil begins to crash … the odds are pretty good that the stock markets will remain quiet until we hear from Janet Yellen next week,'” he wrote.”

        18. Since this is a tech site, I will point out the BREAKING NEWS about a nifty new invention. It is called a “calendar.”

          According to my copy of this marvelous innovation, May 3 (when Comey testified under oath that he had never been an anonymous source) came before May 9, when Comey was fired. That, in turn, happened before May 12, when POTUS threatened Comey with the release of “tapes,” which motivated Comey to leak material that was published on May 16.

          OBJECTIVE fact: You can’t be charged with perjury unless you lie, and you can’t lie about something that hasn’t happened yet.

          The statute he cited does not apply because nobody can “knowingly affirm as true something he believes not to be true” when their testimony is objectively true at the time it is given. Do you have any proof whatever that Comey had leaked something prior to his testimony on May 3?

          If not, you cannot prove he committed perjury on that date. Recklessly claiming that he committed a crime without any reasonable basis for the statement may open you up to legal action for defamation. Good thing you’re anonymous!

          Director Comey certainly did leak certain information sometime prior to its publication on May 16, but so what? Other laws might apply, but certainly not perjury. The question Senator Grassley asked related to events prior to May 3; note the use of the past tense.

          In his only sworn testimony after May 12, Comey freely admitted leaking information in response to the President’s threat on that date, so the former Director didn’t commit perjury then, either.

          I have retired, so I am not in a position to offer a legal opinion about your mental state, but your inability to grasp simple facts does remind me of some of the folks I met in thirty years of doing mental commitments.

        27. When botvinick accused Comey of perjury, that became the topic. Responding to him was not off-topic. Stating that you cannot be convicted of lying under oath when your testimony was true at the time it was given is not an opinion. It is a fact.

          Your alleged inability to recognize that simple fact is likewise a fact and not an opinion. I offered a possible explanation for that fact—that you have somehow lost touch with reality. Yes, that was an opinion, but one well supported by facts. Nothing that I said was off-topic. I only reflected on your character after you had repeatedly accused me of lying about myself and my personal history.

      Christmas 1983 Apple IIe promotion. Mom and dad buy the family an Apple IIe, 2 drives, monitor and printer. They could then come to our computer camp in Beaverton, OR. Circus themed. Bring the family, have a great time.

      We were so awesome the promotion had a caveat. You could not open your computer until you got to the computer camp because we wanted this fun camp to teach you everything about your new purchase. The whole family was invited. The computer camp was February 11th.

      Almost all of these customers didn’t open their computers for over a month waiting for the camp. Many of them came from the Puget Sound area to Beaverton. A good time was had by all.

      I almost made it into the film. The part where they are at the computer show. They filmed us during production. Decided not to use the footage. Damn.

        Gave a school a real good price on an Atari 800 computer and 2 disk. Basically cost. They were in Unalaska, Alaska. Surprisingly, UPS could deliver there. Unulaska, AK. They scraped together the funds from community contributions to buy this and called me. Socialism at work.

    1. The media/establishment describe the supposed hacking of the DNC as “a historical attack on democracy”, “election meddling” or something similar. Those phrases are their Orwellian reframing for the exposure of the corruption within the DNC. By the way, so far not only there is no evidence that the Russian government has carried out/ordered the “hacking”, but also anyone from Russia at all, and even the very fact that there was a successful hacking is not confirmed. The only source for the bulk of the “evidence” is “pay-to-attribute” contractor CrowdStrike with a history of questionable claims that was hired by the DNC that has also repeatedly banned real investigators from accessing their network and servers.

      CrowdStrike tries to make you believe that the Russian government/military intelligence (the “GRU”) would use serially implicated “hacking groups” that use the biggest Russian mail service Yandex for their operations as well as sign their edits by the name of the founder of the KGB. Yes, you have to believe in this caricature of “evidence”. At the same time, Wikileaks’ staff has been claiming from very beginning (former ambassador of the UK) that they got the data from a leaker within the DNC.

Get focused on getting that overseas money back into this country, that’s where you put your energy. I mean, think about it, even if it WAS proven to be 100% true, what difference would it make?       If you heard what Comey actually said, there is no uncertainty Russia conducted focused, active, expensive, highly organized, technical attacks in attempts to influence the US Presidential election and, moreover, they did this as a hostile nation against the US government. It has worked for Russia in other countries; just look at some of the puppets Putin has managed to “help get elected” in various former Soviet satellites. It is a pattern.

      The only reasons that anyone could possibly be okay with this is if they look with disdain and contempt on the democratic experiment that is the USA, in favor of the authoritarian dictatorship that is Putin’s Russia.

    As a matter of law, Comey is 100 percent correct. As I have long argued, and as Comey confirmed in his written statement, our history shows that many presidents—from Adams to Jefferson, to Lincoln, to Roosevelt, to Kennedy, to Bush 1, and to Obama – have directed the Justice Department with regard to ongoing investigations. The history is clear, the precedents are clear, the constitutional structure is clear, and common sense is clear.

    Yet virtually every Democratic pundit, in their haste to “get” President Trump, has willfully ignored these realities. In doing so they have endangered our civil liberties and constitutional rights…

    I think it is important to put to rest the notion that there was anything criminal about the president exercising his constitutional power to fire Comey and to request – “hope” – that he let go the investigation of General Flynn. Just as the president would have had the constitutional power to pardon Flynn and thus end the criminal investigation of him, he certainly had the authority to request the director of the FBI to end his investigation of Flynn.

    So let’s move on and learn all the facts regarding the Russian efforts to intrude on American elections without that investigation being impeded by frivolous efforts to accuse President Trump of committing a crime by exercising his constitutional authority. – Alan M. He is an admitted Washington LEAKER and a tall spineless wimp that folded to AG Lynch pressure to call Hillary’s investigation a “matter” in the middle of her presidential campaign. And how e kept secret notes on our president on his government computer. Comey possibly could be indicted.

Pestering the rest of lazy, cheapass NATO to contribute their fair share is excellent. Melania Trump may be the most beautiful First Lady ever. I didn’t mind Comey being fired at all (but what a brain dead way to do it).

          As for the rest of The Trump: I consider this an age of destruction, of demolition. According to my Angst Theory, that means an equal and opposite generation of creativity, at least outside of a totalitarian system. Despite the traitorous drive to make my country totalitarian, we’re not there! So create on kids. The control freaks hate it! And that’s a great thing.

          Part of the problem of course is the bombardment of propaganda, left and right, in our new information society. It’s all about manipulating the populace who have a weak sense of perspective outside of their designated political boxes. Then add in the desperate crazies factors.
