Apple unveils iPad Pro in 10.5- and 12.9-inch models with the world’s most advanced displays & breakthrough performance

Apple today introduced an all-new 10.5-inch iPad Pro and a new 12.9-inch iPad Pro, featuring the world’s most advanced display with ProMotion technology and incredible performance with the new A10X Fusion chip. The new 10.5-inch model reduces the borders by nearly 40 percent to fit into an incredibly compact package that still weighs just one pound. Combined with powerful new iPad features in iOS 11 coming this fall, like the all-new Files app, customizable Dock, improved multitasking and deeper integration of Apple Pencil, iPad Pro gives users the ability to be even more productive and creative.

“These are by far the most powerful iPads we’ve ever created with the world’s most advanced displays featuring ProMotion, the powerful new A10X Fusion chip and the advanced camera system of iPhone 7,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of Product Marketing, in a statement. “Together with iOS 11 these new iPad Pro models will radically change what users can do with iPad.”

The Most Advanced Display Featuring ProMotion

The stunning, redesigned Retina display in iPad Pro features ProMotion, a new technology that delivers refresh rates of up to 120Hz for fluid scrolling, greater responsiveness and smoother motion content. With ProMotion, Apple Pencil is even more responsive with an industry-best, 20-millisecond latency for even more fluid and natural drawing. ProMotion also improves display quality and reduces power consumption by automatically adjusting the display refresh rate to match the movement of the content.

The advanced Retina display is Apple’s brightest iPad display yet and features antireflective coating, making content easier to see indoors and out. True Tone dynamically adjusts the white balance of the display to match the light around you for a more natural and accurate viewing experience. A wide color gamut enables iPad Pro to deliver digital cinema-standard colors.

Groundbreaking Performance Powered by A10X Fusion Chip

iPad Pro delivers groundbreaking performance, connectivity and versatility to tackle the most demanding tasks. The powerful new 64-bit A10X Fusion chip provides performance that is faster than most PC laptops shipping today, so tackling complex tasks like editing photos and 4K video, rendering 3D images or playing games feels effortless. A six-core CPU and 12-core GPU deliver up to 30 percent faster CPU performance and 40 percent faster graphics performance than the industry-leading A9X chip, while delivering all-day battery life.

iPad Pro is the perfect device to shoot, edit and share pro-quality photos and videos. It features the same advanced front- and back-facing cameras as iPhone 7, including a 12-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization, along with a 7-megapixel FaceTime HD camera. iPad Pro also features a four-speaker audio system, providing powerful, clear and rich stereo sound in any orientation. An embedded Apple SIM and support for 802.11ac Wi-Fi and LTE Advanced make it easier to stay connected when traveling in more than 180 countries and regions.

Touch ID on iPad Pro is more responsive and gives users a simple and secure way to unlock iPad, keep personal information private within apps and approve purchases from the App Store, iTunes Store and iBooks Store. With Apple Pay on iPad, paying for physical goods and services within apps or on websites in Safari has never been easier.

iOS 11 Introduces Powerful iPad Features

iOS 11, coming this fall, introduces powerful new features for iPad, including:

— a new customizable Dock that provides quick access to frequently used apps and documents from any screen;

— improved multitasking, including a redesigned app switcher that brings Spaces to iOS, making it easier to move between apps or pairs of active apps, used in Split View and now Slide Over;

— the new Files app that keeps everything in one place, whether files are stored locally, in iCloud Drive or across other providers like Box, Dropbox and more;

— Multi-Touch Drag and Drop, which is available across the system to move text, photos and files from one app to another, anywhere on the screen;

— a new document scanner in Notes, which lets users easily scan single or multi-page documents, removes shadows and uses powerful image filters to enhance readability; and

— deeper integration with Apple Pencil, with support for inline drawing to write along text in Notes and Mail, Instant Markup to easily sign documents, annotate PDFs or draw on screenshots, and a new Instant Notes feature, which opens Notes from the Lock Screen by simply tapping Apple Pencil on the display. New searchable handwriting makes it easy to search for handwritten text or characters.

Apple Pencil & Smart Keyboard

Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard, available for purchase separately, bring breakthrough levels of precision and utility to iPad Pro. Advanced sensors in Apple Pencil measure both pressure and tilt for natural drawing, annotating and note-taking. A new full-sized Smart Keyboard has been custom designed for the 10.5-inch iPad Pro, offering a thin yet durable keyboard that never needs to be charged or paired over Bluetooth and is easily foldable into a protective Smart Cover.

  1. This pro and that Pro – everything except a new mod Mac Pro. Apple has transformed itself into a consumer electronic company that dabbles in computers.

    1. Just because you can’t recognize the next generation of personal computing even when it’s right in front of your face doesn’t mean the rest of us can’t.

        1. I’m addressing the story in the link you provided. Not your typical GOP sad excuse for an argument – personal attacks. Oh look, your handle, “Superior Being”

          “Affinity-photo-brings-professional-photo-editing-to-pad”

          If this were more than a tiny niche of the market, Apple would have cancelled most of the mac line. But as we have seen today, a 10″ or 12: smart pad can’t replace a desktop computer or workstation.

        2. The news about the MacPro has already been discussed endlessly a few months back after the news conference relating to its future. Hey we know its hardly something to celebrate but whats the point in labouring the point yet again here in a story relating to the iPad Pro, a good news story at that.

          Just let it go until the new Mac Pro becomes a (near) reality then you can start your boring mind numbing deluge of motivated criticism that may (or may not) be relevant to the product at hand. Till then just give it, and us, a break will ya, some of us do have lives (yes even work lives) to lead and want to concentrate upon the relevant technology being discussed here be it positive or negative.

      1. OK sparky, do your spreadsheet or type your dissertation on an iPhone.
        Some of us would rather a nice desktop instead of a toy Facebook machine. And a nice desktop is not a sealed up all in one.
        That is for your secretary.

        1. I’m getting a secretary ? Woohooo!

          Gotta agree. Even my iPad with this new Files app isn’t going to cut it for the tasks I do on my PC..

    2. Apple said it pretty clearly earlier this year that most Pro’s use iMac and MacBook Pro. Very few use the MacPro. Also what we saw today, is that if you’re the kind of person that wants the biggest baddest iMac you can buy, Apple is going to create something for you to sink your dollars into.

      This also clearly sets the stage for whatever the Mac Pro becomes in the future starting either over $5,000 OR being just a case with Apple ROM that will allow you to do whatever you want. So, it’s “relatively” cheap, but you get nothing for spending $999 on just a box that allows you to put your own stuff in.

      1. and the fact is that most of we creatives don’t use a Mac Pro box any longer, indeed many won’t likely stretch to the supercharged iMac due to price though I suspect it will be great for many. However of course there is that minority that do need something more than the all-in -one even if it is likely decreasing and I just hope that they do get something akin to what they need next year. Apple needs to support these cutting edge users (or those who just like to think of them as such) not because it makes them lots of money but becasue of the trickle down effect on all aspects of the company and its users.

        Microsoft created the Surface studio white elephant not because it is practical to most creatives, not because it actually is that powerful not because despite being ridiculously expense for what it is (and yet will earn them practically nothing) but because it improves the overall perception of the company and appeals to imagination of the creatives even if not the practical reality while getting mindless publicity from the fawning press who just love to talk up that company out of instinct. If nothing else it perhaps taught Cook and co you can’t take anything for granted, something they have been guilty of in recent years especially pro users.

    3. Yeah I’d like that new Mac Pro too but will pick up a new 10.5″ iPad Pro nonetheless next week when they show up in stores. Glad I waited. Just desperately need to replace my old & creaky and slow iPad 3 as well as my old & creaky Mac Pro.

  2. LOL at this:

    “Every customer who buys iPad Pro from Apple will be offered free Personal Setup, in-store or online, to help them customize their iPad Pro by setting up email, showing them new apps from the App Store and more.”

    Real “Pro’s” (wink,wink) don’t need help with that blather. Jeez.

  3. Leave it to Apple come up with yet another iteration of the iPad when no one wants the others. iPad is a waste. Another attempt by Apple to get another 1K plus out of people. Useless device

  4. “They’re unlikely to move anyone who already thinks that the words ‘iPad’ and ‘Pro’ don’t belong next to each other.” – Andrew Cunningham

    Well spoken, Andrew.

  5. Weird to see such negativity after Apple basically adressed everything that was holding the iPad back, and in doing so re-imvented personal computing–again. This time it was different, but the result will be the same. Apple leads the next generation to the next big thing. Total domination. Good luck Microsoft and Google!!

  6. One thing I can commend is the Mac OS-ification of iOS for once with the dock and file system. I don’t see it as a natural evolution though, but a reaction to tons of negative feedback from customers. The price drop on the non-touch bar Macbook Pro is also welcome and likely an indicator of where the demand is, same with the Air spec bump.

  7. Have an iPad Pro right now and we will see. The new OS looks like a step forward, but it will never be a replacement for a serious computer with the limitations Apple keeps on iOS.
    Then there is the grossly overpriced pen and keyboard. And the scandalously overpriced LTE radio.

  8. Someone made the comment about a useless device. The iPad was only the fastest selling consumer electronics computer in history. It’s obvious that mobile computing is the future. Actually the future is now.
