“The husband of a woman who was struck by the blast that claimed 22 victims in Manchester on Monday has said her mobile phone may have saved her life,” Alexandra Topping reports for The Guardian. “Lisa Bridgett, 45, was speaking into her iPhone after the Ariana Grande concert when the explosion sent a steel nut towards her head.”
“Bridgett, who manages a boatyard in Pwllheli, North Wales, lost a finger when the nut struck and smashed her phone, and her husband Steve, 45, said she was ‘very lucky to be alive,'” Topping reports. “He said he believed the smashed phone had slowed down the nut, and diverted its trajectory. Bridgett, who was at the concert with her daughter and her daughter’s friend, sustained multiple injuries, including a fractured ankle and a large wound on her thigh. She had surgery on Tuesday and was due to have another operation.”

The problem is not Islam as much as it is intolerance and is true of Christians who attack Planned Parenthood or execute Doctors in Church Foyers (Dr Tiller) as much as this crazy individual. Hyper Orthodox anything is not a formula for tolerance, brotherhood or peace.
As an agnostic I have no use for anybody who kills, harms or represses people in the name of whatever sky gawd. It is amazing that no matter what family you are born into, your people worship the one, true gawd. How that works in a huge and diverse world for any faith claiming exclusivity is it does not work. More evil has been done in the name of gawd than any other attribute.
Evil in the “name of gawd” is not the same as true belief in God. There is ALWAYS an excuse made to justify evil, just as you justify your view with such a small incident number of abortion clinic attacks (where babies are, lest we forget, MURDERED!!!) verses the thousands of Radical Islam terror attacks that also take innocent lives.
It’s interesting that as an agnostic, you don’t admit to the millions slaughtered in the name of NO religion by the USSR, Maoist China and Nazi Germany. Please, feel free to link any of these to Christianity or any true belief in a supreme deity. Did you add these ‘small numbers’ to your knee-jerk comment about religion causing more death than anything? Did you add up the deaths in the 20th century ALONE compared to all the “religious” wars combined?
And have you ever stopped to consider all the small daily good most religions do (even Islam) compared to the number of deaths they cause?
I know you gave the standard Leftist “I’m above all of this” mantra concerning religion, but it was religion that paved the way for great societies, not the lack of it.
It was religion that gave people faith in a better life to get through the hell that our ancestors endured. That may mean nothing to you, but to me it tends to lean towards a scientific theory I have (and never hear others discuss) which is the simple fact that religion is a part of our evolution. Think about that.
Stalin was an Atheist and had been a Seminary Student earlier in life, but Hitler and Mussolini were not. None of these monsters killed advancing one faith over another despite singling out certain groups like Jews and Jehovah’s Witnesses. They also singled out Homosexuals, Union Leaders, Socialists, Communists, the mentally disabled and such. I have been to Dachau – toured it with an Orthodox Jew, in fact (Hi, Howard)- and have also known Survivors of the Final Solution.
As to abortion, I am not comfortable with the practice except in the most dire circumstances. However, I find it strange that Republicans who identify as Libertarians want to tell a Woman and her Doctor what she can do with her body. It would seem to me that a Christian would leave the decision to a Woman and Her Doctor and let God judge them in his good time.
Religious Wars throughout history large and small have claimed far more than those you mention here. Europe ran red with Blood for a very long time between Catholics and everyone else. Muslims repeatedly invaded Europe- there are Mosques in Spain, Portugal and in the Balkans from that time.
The Japanese worshipped the Emperor as a God among other peoples- right up until the end of the Second World War it was fairly common. Some of the First People of the New World were killed for their refusal to accept Catholic Christianity. The Crusades were Religious Wars, the march of Islam to the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans commonly happened at the tip of a Sword. The list is long.

You radically weaken your argument on two fronts.
1) Murder is a legal term. The SCOTUS has defined the termination of a pregnancy before the end of week 24 of a pregnancy as NOT murder. It is a termination of a life form that is considered, legally, non viable. It is not murder.
You, personally, may believe and your religion may tell you, that killing any fetus or other entity from the moment of conception on is “murder”. It just is not so.
The debate can go on and on and on and on virtually ad infinitum about where “it” becomes a “human” or a “person”, but the law is clear.
2) You need to stop hyper inflating your numbers, e.g., “thousands of Radical Islam terror attacks”, if you want anyone with the capability of rational thought to listen to (or read) your arguments. In the last few decades there have not been “thousands” (plural). Admittedly, it is several hundred if you count the smaller ones that get poorly reported, but it is absolutely not “thousands” (plural).

Perhaps all religions share an element of obeisance or even coercion, but “Islam” translates from the Arabic as “submission.” And the proponents of the Caliphate, which included Osama bin Laden, extend the idea of submission to non-believers, who must, as they lack the true faith, be killed. I read somewhere where some Muslim Congress is supposed to address 3-Key issues that creates these factions and would nullify their terrorist reasoning including the need to create a caliphate, the fact the West isn’t against Muslims (only radical Muslim terrorist behavior), etc. – items addressed so there would be no reason that could be justified for jihad. It would be a universal mandate meant for all Muslims and adhered to as an essential tenet to their religion.

The problem is RELIGION. Once a religion is formed by a group of individuals it becomes about power by those individuals over the rest. But the bad acts are always someone acting in the name of their RELIGION (and by proxy, their deity or group of deities).
I have no problem with beliefs of higher powers. We’d be extremely arrogant to believe we are *THE* highest form of life in the entire universe. I have a problem with religions that use that belief to control and bludgeon others.

I further said we as a nation should extend refugee status to these people as we as a nation put their lives at grave risk. That is not partisan- that is humanitarian and realistic.

Actually, the victims that died by receiving the full force of the blast saved her. The further away one is from the bomber and the more victims between you and the bomber are what will most likely save you.
That’s certainly a factor.
It is ALSO certainly a factor that her iPhone took the brunt of the force from the steel nut and kept it from going through the side of her head. Remember the nut had enough blunt force to sever a finger, or require its amputation afterward.
To dismiss the iPhone’s contribution in this case is specious.

Then those iPhones didn’t help save them. Obviously.
Also obviously, the iPhone didn’t help merely be being an iPhone. It could’ve been an Android or other hard object held against her head. But bottom line, in this specific case the iPhone was 100% a contributing factor in her surviving the blast, *in addition to* her being further away from the bomb.
So a Samsung phone could have saved her just as well; including distance from the blast, numbers and positions of victims between her and the blast, type and quantity of explosive, number and type of projectiles, whether phone was in right or left hand. Can you think of any other factors?
Just admit that you’re being a sanctimonious pedant now, otherwise you go and tell the husband that his wife’s iPhone wasn’t a huge factor in saving her life.
To overestimate the benefit of an iPhone as protection in a bomb blast is specious, stupid, and ridiculous.
