“A new report out of Asia delivers one more detail about the iPhone 8’s screen,” Smith reports. “According to DigiTimes’s sources, the iPhone 8 will be one of the smartphones this year to feature a display with a 18:9 aspect ratio. Such displays are already available on the Galaxy S8 and LG G6, with some content distributors already adjusting for the new viewing experience.”
Smith reports, “According to DigiTimes, Apple’s iPhone 8 will have a 5.8-inch screen AMOLED screen.”

Maybe my math is rusty, but isn’t 18:9 really 2:1 ? Is the use of “18:9” meant to somehow make it seem “bigger” than 16:9?
18:9 is also the same as 16:8, which would definitely be “smaller” than 16:9. LOL

Ratio’s have never represented a quantifiable size, rather than in this case, a relationship between the width and height.
The 5.8″ bit in the article? Did you get that bit? Or are you speaking on behalf of yourself rather than the rest of us?

There have always been preferred ways to mention ratios such as an iPhone is 1:1.77, which is the same as, and most commonly described as 16:9. Movie makers have different preferences and use the two interchangeably.
The Univisium ratio: 18:9 (2:1) had been coined in the movie industry much before the phone guys, 18:9 is considered a standard now, and makes sense to use that convention over 2:1, for consumer compatibly awareness etc.

The very first post lamented on the notion that rhetorical semantics lead to a realization that the author made assumptions the reader is dumb enough to fall for the trick. “Fact: Screen is bigger. Assumption: Reader is to dumb to realize it.” You took it in the opposite direction, which I interpret as some attempt at satire. The ratio is the same but still playing the stupid card for effect.

I never did understand why 4:3 or 16:9 became popular aspect ratios for anything. 2:1 makes infinitely more sense.
My math teacher taught me to express ratios using smallest denominators. 18:9 is just not correct mathematical documentation.
