New report delivers another key iPhone 8 detail

“The iPhone 8’s key feature will be the display,” Chris Smith reports for BGR. “For the first time in Apple’s iPhone history, the screen will occupy almost all the real estate available on the front side. Apple has been preparing for this change for a few years, developing critical technologies that would let it modify the design of the handset without removing any features.”

“A new report out of Asia delivers one more detail about the iPhone 8’s screen,” Smith reports. “According to DigiTimes’s sources, the iPhone 8 will be one of the smartphones this year to feature a display with a 18:9 aspect ratio. Such displays are already available on the Galaxy S8 and LG G6, with some content distributors already adjusting for the new viewing experience.”

Smith reports, “According to DigiTimes, Apple’s iPhone 8 will have a 5.8-inch screen AMOLED screen.”

      1. Ratio’s have never represented a quantifiable size, rather than in this case, a relationship between the width and height.

The 5.8″ bit in the article? Did you get that bit? Or are you speaking on behalf of yourself rather than the rest of us?

        Dimebar?

        1. Those ad popovers are infuriating. I’d pay good money to find out who the coders and advert agencies are who are pushing this crap.

While those who are actually advertising may not be responsible for the way their ads are pushed, it might do some good to let them know their ads are irritating and because of that you at disinclined to buy their product.

Oh, along those same lines… MDN, its less likely that I will visit your site if this crap continues.

    1. There have always been preferred ways to mention ratios such as an iPhone is 1:1.77, which is the same as, and most commonly described as 16:9. Movie makers have different preferences and use the two interchangeably.

The Univisium ratio: 18:9 (2:1) had been coined in the movie industry much before the phone guys, 18:9 is considered a standard now, and makes sense to use that convention over 2:1, for consumer compatibly awareness etc.

      P.S. That’s what she said 😉

    2. Don’t be silly. 16 is WAY bigger than 2. Actually, 18:9 is used because it’s being compared to 16:9.

It’s also the same as 1:0.5 but that’s just weird looking.

    1. I understood what you meant. I agree people don’t think passed the words they read.

-lesson- As we all know ratio is not size and dpi is not resolution. Given proper dimensions and resolution we could calculate dpi and ratio. -end lesson-

The very first post lamented on the notion that rhetorical semantics lead to a realization that the author made assumptions the reader is dumb enough to fall for the trick. “Fact: Screen is bigger. Assumption: Reader is to dumb to realize it.” You took it in the opposite direction, which I interpret as some attempt at satire. The ratio is the same but still playing the stupid card for effect.

You got down-starred because it went over their heads.

  1. I never did understand why 4:3 or 16:9 became popular aspect ratios for anything. 2:1 makes infinitely more sense.

My math teacher taught me to express ratios using smallest denominators. 18:9 is just not correct mathematical documentation.

    1. There is some bit of ancient technology you young kids may never have seen before:

      Cathode Ray Tube

It’s what burned out my eyes. And started circular, then was stretched a bit later into the 4:3 ratio.

      Some called it Television
