Apple granted 56 patents today covering an edge-to-edge iPhone display, Touch ID under the display and 3D scanner

“The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office officially published a series of 56 newly granted patents for Apple Inc. today,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple.

“Our report covers three specific patents,” Purcher reports. “One covers a portable 3D scanner associated with a Kinect-like device. Another covers Touch ID that moves from the Home Button to beneath the display. The last patent covers a touch panel that will allow a device like the iPhone 8 to have a display that extends edge-to-edge eliminating the traditional bezel.”

“Apple’s newly granted patent 9,652,096 covers their invention relating to the fabrication of an electronic device, and more particularly, to bending one or more edges of a touch sensor panel and/or a display panel of an electronic device to reduce the non-interactive border area of the device,” Purcher reports. “This can achieve the advantage of allowing the touch active area of the panel to be extended closer to the edge of the device or reducing the overall width of the device.”

Purcher reports, “Apple’s newly granted patent covers their invention relating to methods and devices for projection and capture of optical radiation, and particularly to optical 3D mapping.”

      1. I assume you intended this comment as your sarcastic view of the state of things in the USA. But whether you realize it or not you have stated a universal truth. Regardless of where we live today we live under a theocracy or “god” ruled society. The specific “deity” that rules will vary with the country or region of the world in which we live. But ultimately the whole world is under the dominion of “the god of this world” who “has blinded the minds of unbelievers…” ( 2 Corinthians 4:4). Satan is his name and he is real regardless of the ridicule and vituperation that this statement of fact will engender. You can vilify the messenger but the truth still stands. Worship of this god is manifested in many forms: worship of self (secular humanism and other forms of atheism), political correctness that denies the existence of absolute truth (look in the Holy Bible if you need to know what truth is), worship of the “government” and/or science as our source of salvation, and the list can go on. All of these are forms of “religion”.You may dismiss me as a deranged religious zealot. But if you worship one of these above mentioned religions you may be the pot calling the kettle black.

        1. You may be a “deranged religious zealot,” anonymous John. I don’t know you, so I cannot make that judgment with any degree of confidence.

I maintain a significant degree of skepticism with regard to all religions. Many of them have led to unnecessary and widespread strife and wars over the centuries. I am particularly concerned with the actions that recent and current Republican Administrations have taken with respect to funneling tax dollars to religious institutions. I strongly oppose those actions. At the very least, any religious institution that wants to receive tax dollars should have to give up their tax-exempt status.

  1. Expect to be able to scan your face and add yourself to games, AR, and VR. For example, when wearing an AR/VR helmet your face is covered. So how can you be seen in the AR/VR space? The answer is that your scanned face will be presented. Add to this the emotion-sensing software they picked up a few years ago and you get a strong sense of what’s going to be on offer.

Imagine having a “meeting” in your backyard. 10 people are there around the circle. You look around and see them all. They see you. They smile, you smile. You see their lips moving and eyes sparkling as they talk. // Meanwhile, in real life you’re all in 10 different places around the globe with goggles on your faces.

This will have tectonic implications for any form of gathering — education, business, consulting, apprenticing, church, government, etc. Get developers on the scent and you’ve got the makings of the next tech revolution.

  2. This is the news that lets me forget all the “Touch ID on the back” and display size rumors. Glad I have stayed long in AAPL. If we get repatriation and boffo iPhone 8 sales, the best is yet to come for investors.
