Purported ‘2017’ iPhone leak hints at Ion-X back glass

“The iPhone 8 has been rumored to have a front and back glass design for a while, and now new images have surfaced the may show the glass used on the rear casing for a ‘2017’ iPhone,” Zac Hall reports for 9to5Mac. “If the leak is accurate, the glass material could be the same as some Apple Watch models.”

“There are a few reasons to be skeptical about the latest leak, however, which appears to originate on Chinese social media platform Sina Weibo and was submitted to leak aggregator Slashleaks,” Hall reports. “For starters, the Slashleaks post claims the leaked part is used for a 2017 iPhone SE and not the iPhone 8 which is actually expected to feature a glass back.”

Hall reports, “It’s possible the glass casing, which claims to be Ion-X glass like aluminum Apple Watch models, could be used for the 4.7-inch iPhone 7s this year.”

  1. My prediction, based on this article, coupled with other leaked details, the three models are iPhone 7s/8 (same model) iPhone 7s/8 Plus and the iPhone SE.

They might call it “iPhone,” harkening back to the original name with Plus and SE. It’s seems about right for an SE refresh and the dubious name of a 7s and 8 (edition) version, doesn’t hold water. Apple makes practical devices, not lamberginies. I think the Apple Watch Edition is an anomaly in the Apple lineup and won’t jump lines.

We get the OLED screens, but I also predict we will not be all that happy with it, because of pixel burn and the resulting ghosting. I think this will effect resale value. I think Apple should continue development of LCD tech and let the others have OLED. It doesn’t seem to be a marketing roadblock, to be hooked on LCD.

Really I don’t expect any real magic. I expect excellence and we will love the new glass case. The iPhone 4/4s was a marvelously engineered product, attenna issues aside. Apple knows their €h!+, when it comes to phones.

  2. I’m still guessing liquidmetal. It IS considered glass.

Oh and I love how the MDN app opens links to the App Store! I use the app over the webpage specifically for this feature!

  3. Apple must be worried that Samsung is going to beat them. Their Whatever-It-Is 8 is currently the most fragile phone ever made. The screen breaks every time in testing when dropped. Apple want’s the back of their phone to break too. Unless “glass” means Liquidmetal like Wrong Again said.
