Microsoft makes Visual Studio for Mac generally available

“Microsoft is making its Visual Studio for Mac product generally available today, May 10,” Mary Jo Foley reports for ZDNet. “Officials announced availability of the product on Day 1 of the company’s Build 2017 developer conference in Seattle.”

“Visual Studio for Mac is not a port of Visual Studio for Windows; it’s a rebranded version of Xamarin Studio integrated development environment (IDE) that will work on the Mac,” Foley reports. “(Microsoft bought mobile-tool vendor Xamarin in February 2016.)”

Foley reports, “Microsoft made a preview of Visual Studio for Mac available in November 2016.”

    1. Reading a book on it right now as I develop for Windows and Linux systems. Now with VS for Mac I can develop the mobile apps for iPhone and Android (not my choice). XCode is still required though I’m not sure to what extent. I know I can use .NET core to develop the web side services and apps. You just install the .NET Core Framewoek on the target sytem and ur code in C# (or whatever .NET language you use) runs.

      1. If the interface is similar enough, you could pull more developers from the Windows camp to at least use Macs for .NET development over PCs even if they end up not developing any macOS or iOS applications.
