Apple’s unpleasant iPhone surprise

“In announcing earnings on Tuesday, the company surprised many investors by disclosing that iPhone unit sales fell 1% from the same period a year earlier to 50.8 million,” Don Reisinger writes for Fortune. “It was one of the few worrisome details in an otherwise strong quarter.”

Reisinger writes, “Another Apple nugget that got attention this week was that the company is working on a smart home hub—a competitor to Amazon’s Echo— that may be unveiled at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference next month.”

“Apple’s disappointing iPhone sales surprised some analysts who had anticipated increased unit sales. In a conference call with analysts, Apple CEO Tim Cook explained the decline by saying that recent rumors about the company’s new iPhones depressed sales,” Reisinger writes. “Cook said that anticipation for the expected devices, which could be announced later this year, prompted some iPhone owners to hold off buying new phones because they wanted to see if new models were coming.”

MacDailyNews Take: Apple’s Q217 iPhone revenue of $33.249 billion was up 1% from the same period a year earlier.

Apple generated a total of $52.9 billion in revenue with operating cash flow of $12.5 billion – in the quarter after Christmas!

The company will survive any “iPhone pause” it’s currently experiencing.

  1. Rumours schumours! I bought an SE a little while ago. I long ago gave up waiting for new stuff to be better than what was on the market. If you need one, get it. If it is available in a store it is already ‘old’, so who cares.

    1. Whenever something new comes out, the “old” stuff drops in price or gets replaced by newer stuff at the same price point.

If you need it, sure, get it…

But if you can wait, that same money would get you a better device.

    2. I just bought an iPhone 7+ with 250 GB storage.
I’ll see what the generation has to offer, but probably won’t upgrade for 2 years or so, 500GB storage?

  2. I advised friends and clients to wait until the iPhone 8 (or whatever Apple will be naming it) comes out in the fall instead of upgrading now. It’s a no-brainer to not tie yourself up when a major upgrade is due soon.

    1. It’s hard not to notice but smartphones seemingly have turned into people’s lives. People seem to live and breathe with smartphones in their hands. The smartphone appendage. The smartphone is much worse than the Walkman ever was. It’s quite an amazing phenomenon. It’s a wonder there aren’t a lot more accidents befalling smartphone users. It’s hard to imagine Apple ever going out of business selling smartphones to consumers. I wonder if there are people who’ve asked to be buried with their smartphones so they can be contacted in the afterlife.

      1. True. It’s actually an epidemic. Especially texting and driving. Here in California, no matter what law they pass, people still do it. Maybe if they raised the fine to like $2,000, it might help. What people who do this don’t realize or care is, not only dos this cause loss of time for other drivers, it’s downright dangerous and it kills people. And when you walk around anywhere, everybody’s face is buried in the device. It’s a shame our society has come to this.
