Apple’s billion-dollar advanced manufacturing investment is a blueprint for U.S. job growth

“Add Apple to the list of companies trying to make nice with the Trump administration,” Issie Lapowsky writes for Wired. “Yes, even the richest company in the country, which rarely backs down from a fight with Washington, sometimes succumbs to government pressure. But unlike Carrier, an air conditioning manufacturer that recently scrapped plans to move its factory to Mexico, Apple’s response to Trump’s agenda may actually help create the kind of jobs that are growing, not disappearing.”

“In an interview with CNBC, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the tech giant is launching a $1 billion fund to invest in advanced manufacturing companies in the United States, announcing its first investment later this month,” Lapowsky writes. “According to the National Association of Manufacturers, for every $1 invested in manufacturing, $1.81 is injected back into the economy. ‘When you talk about why this matters, not only is it the billion investment, but the multiplier effect around it,’ says Brian Raymond, director of innovation policy at NAM.”

“This $1 billion fund transcends mere marketing. It’s good policy,” Lapowsky writes. “There’s one hitch. Even as Apple commits $1 billion to invest in the companies that are creating these jobs, manufacturers may have a tough time finding the high-skilled workers they need to fill them… That means that even as President Trump pressures Apple and others, Apple’s investment might just pressure President Trump into supporting workforce development programs that help build these skills.”

  1. I want to thank all of the business leaders who have joined us to discuss a subject that’s very important to me — training our workforce for the 21st century, especially with respect to manufacturing jobs.

We’re working every day to bring back jobs to our country, and thousands and thousands are already coming back. You’re seeing it, you’re reading about it in the papers every single day. We want to make sure that we have the workforce development programs we need to ensure these jobs are being filled by American workers.U.S. President Donald Trump, March 17, 2017

      1. Sorry Sean, but Repubican presidents care about EVERYONE. That would include naysayers like you.

On the flip side of that coin, Clinton clearly lost for the same accusation you level at President Trump. Breaking news: Democrat identity politics doesn’t work anymore …

        1. I’m not talking about “republican presidents” — who in the past have enthesiastically protected the air, water, American workers. I’m talking about this traitorous scumbag, whose administration is riddled with people meeting with and by paid by foreign governments. And I don’t mean “meeting with” in any kind of sanctioned, official capacity.

Gawd, he can barely speak a coherent English sentence. He almost never says anything CONCRETE… it’s always “tremendous”, “winning”, “sad”. And the majorty of what he says is simply lies.

        2. “I’m talking about this traitorous scumbag, whose administration is riddled with people meeting with and by paid by foreign governments.”

Yeah? What proof do you have? Forward evidence to the New York Times and you can share a Pulitzer Prize.

“Gawd, he can barely speak a coherent English sentence.”

Gawd, I understand him perfectly! And so did all the blue state voters that turned red and handed a HISTORIC ELECTION VICTORY to a first time — non-politician. Give credit where credit is due, still smarting Democrat.

“He almost never says anything CONCRETE… it’s always “tremendous”, “winning”, “sad”. And the majorty of what he says is simply lies.”

And the majority of what Obama said was lies: Affordable Health Care Act, keep your doctor and your premiums will go down was one of the biggest lies in presidential history. And the Clintons are honest and never lie? And the fake media always tells the truth and never lies?

Seems to me Sean, BECAUSE OF YOUR PARTISAN BLINDERS — you cannot discern a lie from the truth … 🇺🇸

        3. Are you following what has been coming out in the investigations? And that’s only just starting.

Are you following how screwed the millions of people are with so-called Trumpcare?

        4. Would that be FAKE NEWS from the CIA Counterfeit Network, Washed Post or the NY Slimes?

What, no Pulitzer for you? Thought not.

Screwed with the new healthcare bill? Hmmm, it is only a first step on a long journey and certainly not law. The Senate has a chance to improve the bill and anything can happen.

Also, following chamber rules of procedure this is only phase one of a multi-pronged, multi-year effort to correct the EXPENSIVE, keep your own doctor, premium savings of $2,500 per family, Unaffordable Care Act. What a joke it begs to be eliminated.

Be wary of FAKE NEWS from some so called journalists …

        5. Yesiree, Bob.

Sean and his ilk as Melvin is fond of saying, drinks the over the top Democrat kool aid, relentlessly repeated by the complicit Democrat media hyperbole trying to rationalize and legitimize the spread of FAKE NEWS.

The Democrats are DESPARATE. They have been getting shellacked in the voting booth and their PC politics soundly rejected for YEARS now. And they are too arrogant and stupid (see Hillary’s losing explanation couple days ago) to admit it. Talking about the party bosses, not the rank and file Democrats who still believe in the party like it was in the 1960s …

        6. “Would that be FAKE NEWS from the CIA Counterfeit Network, Washed Post or the NY Slimes?”

Yeh – GoeB – EVERYBODY’S lying except your beloved would-be dictator. Noticed who he praises in the world? Russia. North Korea. Turkey. That’s where you want the US to go?

By the way, your knee-jerk categorization is stupidly way off base. I am not a Democrat.

        7. You confuse ‘dictator’ with Teddy’s bully pulpit.

You confuse a master negotiator bargaining tactic with devotion.

You confuse your own political identity.

          You sure are CONFUSED …

        8. Master negotiater, master business man, master common sense and master PRESIDENT.

I have empathy for those who backed the worst president in U.S. history and have NOTHING LEFT.

Except reduced to crying, whining, and conflated obfuscation ..,

        9. It is called the American Health Care Act.

Unlike the Affordable Health Care Act.

The deceit of Democrats never ceases to amaze me …

        10. Trumpcare. If the orange one wants to claim it will do anything that he promised, and as usual use it as a big press play, then he deserves to have his name permanently affixed to the bill. Just wait till you see the pork in it.

        11. Jean, Sean and John Smith. Amazing how you all come out at the SAME time and attack the SAME poster. That would be me. Possibly, are you all the same posing poster?

Agent Orange CHANGE will deliver because we have already seen that many times. I can’t help you all with serial blindness to reality …

        12. Uhhh, did it occur to you that there might be more than one person who dislikes your viewpoint, your man baby president, and a White House riddled with billionaires and hard-line ultra right pigs like Bannon.

        13. Sean,

Don’t confuse these guys with facts, which they insist are fake news. They are much fonder of their unsupported opinions, which they insist are facts.

A wise man (St. Ignatius of Loyola) once said that one should make every effort to parse the statements of others in the best possible light. When they are clearly in error even after your efforts to understand them, do your best to gently correct them. If they decide to ignore the truth after all that, it is on their heads. There comes a point when you just have to walk away and let them face damnation on their own.

When someone utters an untruth and then repeats it after being shown the truth, it is clear that he is not mistaken, but simply lying. The pattern is pretty clear on this website and in this thread: Somebody says something that is simply false. That could be a mistake, so somebody provides a correction. Rather than respond to it, they simply double down on the falsehood. Rather than provide any factual support for their allegation, they insult the person trying to inform them. That shows that it was never a mistake but always a lie.

They seem to be under the impression that real Republicans and real Conservatives are not people devoted to facts, freedom, and the Constitution, but those who reject those values in search of raw political power. So, advocates of traditionally conservative values who do not appreciate the Trumpist agenda must be lying when they say they are Conservative Republicans and have been for their entire adult lives.

For example, since TrumpCare will be great for healthy males like themselves, it must be great for everybody. When shown the specifics that prove that this is not the case (older Americans, female Americans, sick Americans, and poor Americans will be much worse off), they do not provide contravening facts, but respond by calling you a “Libtard” or a Communist.

Actually, I only know of two actual card-carrying members of the Communist Party who have been anywhere near the center of American political life in recent decades. One of them is Donald Trump’s father-in-law and the other is his first former father-in-law.

        14. Nicely articulated.
Confronting them, though, isn’t to try and convince THEM. I have no fantasy of ever doing that. It’s more to not give them free space to constantly spout crap and be abusive towards others.

        15. Two Liberals piously consoling each other over failed elitism politics. You have learned NOTHING from Hilliary’s loss. No surprise there.

Unless you work in Hollywood, REALITY wins …

        16. You should try listening to John Kasich sometime. A compassionate conservative who actually believes and acts on his Christian principles.
I certainly don’t agree with him on everything, but that’s life. Everything’s not black and white. But he is SO far ahead of your ignorant pyscho snowflake.
Funny how the US is now the laughingstock of the planet and has completely lost the moral high ground, and you STILL love your vacuous buffoon.

        17. “But he is SO far ahead of your ignorant pyscho snowflake.”

The red line enforcer is not a snowflake. You are talking about Obama.

“Funny how the US is now the laughingstock of the planet and has completely lost the moral high ground.”

And just who defines moral high ground — politically correct professors? Once again, you are confused and are talking about Obama witnessed by denigration of world standing the last eight years.

Regarding President Trump’s standing in the world, as opposed to the teaching moment all talk blahblahblah wimp, once again your belief projections are untrue.

I can’t recall a first term president that met with so many world leaders in his first 100 days. Negotiating with China, aggressively warning North Korea, putting Syria and Afghanistan on notice (bombing) in such a short time. Truly amazing and remarkable record for a first time, inexperienced politician.

A word of wisdom to you and the rest of the disbelievers: Just because you disagree with President Trump’s politics and mock his flamboyant personality, does NOT NEGATE his accomplishments. Spin does not change reality but there are enough FOOLS out there to eat it up and drink the kool aid …

        18. “And just who defines moral high ground”
Everybody in the world to whom the US says, ‘We are the leaders of the free world’.

“I can’t recall a first term president that met with so many world leaders in his first 100 days.”
And they all think he’s a crass blustering baby.

  2. VICTORY in the House! President Trump wins again!

The Obamacare abomination begins to die today and the country will prosper because of it! On to the Senate!

The death of the Obamacare abomination will help to create even more jobs.

    Also, this:

    Congrats again, America!

    MAGA.

      1. These traitors need to be remembered come re-election time:

Here are the 20 Republicans who joined Democrats to vote against the bill: Andy Biggs of Arizona, Mike Coffman of Colorado, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Walter B. Jones of North Carolina, Frank LoBiondo of New Jersey, Christopher Smith of New Jersey, Leonard Lance of New Jersey, Dan Donovan of New York, John Katko of New York, Michael Turner and David Joyce of Ohio, Ryan Costello, Patrick Meehan, Brian Fitzpatrick, and Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania, Will Hurd of Texas, Barbara Comstock of Virginia, and Jaime Beutler and Dave Reichert of Washington.

    1. Congrats, America. A big step towards running your country based on hate-filled Iron Age fairy stories.
(If you think I’m over the top with ‘hate’, go read the Bible… all of it. Yeh, there are good bits, but huge amounts are simply sickening. And yes, every bit as bad as the Koran.)

      1. Please tell me how scrapping and improving a flawed and promises broken law is, “hate-filled Iron Age fairy stories.”

Never mind. Go back to what you are smoking .,,

        1. I think he can get far better results with what you are smoking if you think that TrumpCare is going to cost less for most Americans. Young, healthy, males will indeed pay a lot less… if they chose to buy insurance at all. The rest of us are going to have premiums, deductibles, and copays that go through the ceiling.

With no more requirement for individuals or employers to have health insurance, only people who are worried about their health are likely to buy it. Sicker individuals cost more, so the companies will have no choice but raise their basic rates to recapture their losses. The only alternative would be to go out of business because they can no longer cover their losses with premium income from their healthy former customers.

On top of that increase in basic rates, companies under ObamaCare can only charge a 60-year-old three times the rate they charge a 20-year-old. With TrumpCare, that goes up to five times, with the possibility of a state waiver that permits even higher multipliers. Is anyone under any doubt that the insurance companies will charge as much as the law allows?

The same goes for preexisting conditions. Rates for healthy people will go down, but they aren’t the ones who need insurance. Less healthy individuals will go into high risk pools. The history is that states with those pools have never had rates that average individuals can afford; the government subsidies are never enough to cover the surcharge on premiums. Bear in mind also that people with chronic health conditions are likely to have lower incomes and thus less disposable income they can spend on insurance than healthy folks.

About the only thing I can imagine that would make it tolerable is to smoke whatever you are.

        2. GoeB,

Who gives a flip whether I am a real or fake conservative? We obviously differ on what conservatism is. I don’t think conservatism requires killing nonwealthy Americans by denying them affordable health care. You apparently think it does. ObamaCare may be an abomination, but TrumpCare is much worse.

I made a factual argument you can’t refute, so you went straight to personal insults. What part of what I said is not accurate? Please be specific on how any average American who is not young, male, and in perfect health will benefit from the changes in health law the House passed today.

        3. Nothing to refute when you arrogantly ASSUME your fantasy positions are self righteous realities.

I warned you before Libtard in DISGUISE, for putting words in my mouth and again arrogantly describing people in the wrong light. Your post and conclusions, once again, are TOTAL BS 🐂💩

Some things never change … 😆

        4. Okay wiseguy, you have decided that attack tactics are the way to win your brainless arguments, why don’t you go take it to a political discussion board?

Neither Trump nor you nor any of the fact free cheerleaders here have been able to specifically identify how Trumpcare would lower prices, increase competition, or cover “all Americans” as Trump repeatedly promised, including those unfortunate people who suffer from preexisting health problems and those people who happen to work at businesses that cannot or will not provide healthcare.

Did you read all the pages of the Trumpcare bill? If you care so much about taxes and deficits, why are you cheering a bill full of special interest pork THAT WAS RUSHED TO VOTE INSTEAD OF BEING ANALYZED BY THE CBO AS ALL TYPICAL MAJOR BILLS ARE????????

The usual few bigmouths are not here to discuss better healthcare or how major corporations like Apple can help, or anything at all about real results of complex issues. You are just brainless cheerleaders paid to blog for Trump or Putin or whatever partisan scum organization feels the need to spread FUD. No, even worse. You aren’t even presenting reasonable uncertainty or doubt. You don’t want all the facts, or to discuss all sides of the issues. You are parroting your partisan position and attacking anyone who has other viewpoints.

A young fool believes himself bulletproof and independent, and given the choice, he will shun the duty to pitch in for the old, the sick, and the weak. You know, those people who painstakingly cared for the brat when he was an infant, helpless and vulnerable.

If you had a shred of empathy for others around you, and if you actually act with Christian compassion as you were taught, you would spend less time making excuses why 24 million Americans should be denied preventative healthcare and start acting like an adult willing to find a better way. The ACA needed further refinement, but gutting it and sneaking in tax cuts for the rich, along with other pork, all neatly stuffed into a bill that will cost taxpayers somewhere around $400 billion MORE than Obamacare does not seem like a step in the right direction.

In the end, we can all pitch in to pay for preventative healthcare for all, or we can continue to pay huge property taxes to fund local emergency rooms at many times the price. But you knew that already, didn’t you? You read the bill already. Right?

        5. Good points on empathy, Christian and more.
I’d like to add one more point — what the hell is the point of having a country if the attitude is “look after yourself, jack, and if you sink, too bad for you”?

        6. Wise and a Guy — well, one out of two isn’t bad. You got it exactly backwards: DEFENSE tactics with a bit of tough love mixed in. 😘

Breaking news: Political discussions enter into every board, no matter where you go. Don’t like it, don’t read it!

As I have posted several times here the American Health Care Act is the first step in a long process. I’ll leave it to experts like you to already know all the ramifications, costs and outcomes for years to come BEFORE it becomes settled law.

Tell me, where was your expert advice and analysis when the Unaffordable Health Care Act was passed? Gotta pass it to know what’s in it is classic cluelessness up there with the deplorables comment that cost Hillary the election.

“You are just brainless cheerleaders paid to blog for Trump or Putin or whatever partisan scum organization feels the need to spread FUD.”

Wow. We are all brainless paid cheerleaders to spread FUD. I believe you mistake honest supporters for the George Soros mindless paid protestors NATIONALLY at every turn of Trump’s accomplishments.

True story: My local Congressman voted for the new health bill was visited by a handful of protestors outside his main local office, staged and already in place as the vote winded down. The local newspaper took a few pics, interviewed two people and within 15 minutes they were gone. First person factual account, NOT opinion. If they were paid, they certainly did not hang around long enough to earn a paycheck.

“No, even worse. You aren’t even presenting reasonable uncertainty or doubt. You don’t want all the facts, or to discuss all sides of the issues. You are parroting your partisan position and attacking anyone who has other viewpoints.”

I starting to feel sorry for you. You don’t see or understand positions and arguments other than your own. You are describing, YOURSELF.

“A young fool believes himself bulletproof and independent, and given the choice, he will shun the duty to pitch in for the old, the sick, and the weak. You know, those people who painstakingly cared for the brat when he was an infant, helpless and vulnerable.”

          Hey, we agree. 😊

Don’t assume you know what brand of compassion I was taught. That said and I’ll say it again, the new health bill is in its infancy. I don’t buy the preemptive crystal ball sky is falling chicken sh*t strikes from the opponents in the Democrat party and the biased big media. But I’ll keep an open mind.

We shall see and fingers crossed the new health care bill will fix the fatal flaws and benefit everyone at LOWER costs … 👍🏻

        7. “We shall see and fingers crossed the new health care bill will fix the fatal flaws and benefit everyone at LOWER costs”.

Yes, it WILL be very simple to see when millions lose healthcare and costs skyrocket for the elderly and other groups.

        8. Was I talking to you? No matter.

So what is the point of your numerous posts trashing Trump? Makes you feel better about backing a Clueless Clinton loser. I can buy that, but it seems an exercise in pointless futility.

“Yes, it WILL be very simple to see when millions lose healthcare and costs skyrocket for the elderly and other groups.”

Hey brainless, healthcare costs have been skyrocketing for years now and a major reason Trump was elected.

Time to fix the problem, end the partisanship and MAGA! … 😊🇺🇸

        9. GoeB,

Just answer one question without going into a personal attack, if you can:

If insurance companies are currently charging older Americans three times as much as younger folks, because that is all that ObamaCare allows, and TrumpCare allows them to charge five times as much (which it does), what would lead you to believe that a senior’s premiums will not go up by 67% due to that factor alone?

Example: Coverage that costs a 20-year-old $2000/year and currently costs a senior $6000 will go up to $10,000, even IF there are no issues with inflation, price gouging, preexisting conditions, reduced coverage, higher copays, or any of the other price hikes that might have happened anyway, and that TrumpCare will (at best) not improve.

Note: Under ObamaCare, individuals receive various tax offsets and subsidies for healthcare expenses that TrumpCare replaces with a single tax credit—$2000 for individuals under 20, ranging up to $4000 for individuals over 60. In the example above, the net cost of insurance for the 20-year-old will be $0, while the net cost to the senior will be $6000 (the same as he is paying now, but without any of the current tax benefits or subsidies).

If I am the idiot you claim me to be, please point out where I have failed to see how this “benefits everyone at LOWER costs” (emphasis yours).

    2. The American Health Care Act (HR 1628) passed by the House today reduces taxes on the American people by over $1 trillion. The bill abolishes the following taxes imposed by Obama and the Democrat party in 2010 as part of Obamacare:

-Abolishes the Obamacare Individual Mandate Tax which hits 8 million Americans each year.

-Abolishes the Obamacare Employer Mandate Tax. Together with repeal of the Individual Mandate Tax repeal this is a $270 billion tax cut.

-Abolishes Obamacare’s Medicine Cabinet Tax which hits 20 million Americans with Health Savings Accounts and 30 million Americans with Flexible Spending Accounts. This is a $6 billion tax cut.

-Abolishes Obamacare’s Flexible Spending Account tax on 30 million Americans. This is a $20 billion tax cut.

-Abolishes Obamacare’s Chronic Care Tax on 10 million Americans with high out of pocket medical expenses. This is a $126 billion tax cut.

-Abolishes Obamacare’s HSA withdrawal tax. This is a $100 million tax cut.

-Abolishes Obamacare’s 10% excise tax on small businesses with indoor tanning services. This is a $600 million tax cut.

-Abolishes the Obamacare health insurance tax. This is a $145 billion tax cut.

-Abolishes the Obamacare 3.8% surtax on investment income. This is a $172 billion tax cut.

-Abolishes the Obamacare medical device tax. This is a $20 billion tax cut.

-Abolishes the Obamacare tax on prescription medicine. This is a $28 billion tax cut.

-Abolishes the Obamacare tax on retiree prescription drug coverage. This is a $2 billion tax cut.

As a presidential candidate in 2008, Barack Obama had promised repeatedly that he would not raise any tax on any American earning less than $250,000 per year. He broke the promise when he signed Obamacare. With the passage of the House GOP bill, tens of millions of middle income Americans will get tax relief from Obamacare’s long list of tax hikes.

        1. I would be more impressed if the House Republicans had all agreed to waive their luxury-quality group health insurance and go on the individual market. The cuts described above all benefit big business with hardly any direct benefits for individual Americans, whose costs will go up dramatically for the reasons I describe above.

        2. Talking to yourself, again?

Per your misguided MO, and your false premise it has to be fixed by the Senate is personal opinion and simply incorrect. Gee, what a surprise from a masked Libtard.

Certainly, there is ALWAYS room for improvement. But only a left partisan like yourself doesn’t see it and will continue to DENIGRATE an effort to FIX the Unaffordable Health Care Act.

          Yup, an ACT alright …

      1. Not quite. Trumpcare is a deficit spending bill with no redeeming financial value. It’s designed to score political points, not to improve healthcare costs.

Ryan inserted pork and tax breaks into the same old a flawed repeal act that eliminates the requirements for insurance companies to cover people in need, eliminates the funding mechanism required to replace the legacy system where insurance avoidance led to massive charity care at emergency rooms. Not a solution to anything. Hospitals still have regional monopolies, pharma continues to enjoy its profiteering, insurance companies don’t have any requirements to provide basic coverage packages at any price, nor do the have to compete in markets they claim are not profitable enough.

Trump promised everyone Cadillac quality healthcare for all, at Kia prices. What this slashing of insurance regulations will do is make insurance cheap for 20somethings and completely unaffordable for retirees. Just like it was over a decade ago. If the senate is dumb enough to approve this bill, then you can all come back a year from now and report how much the premiums on your health insurance changed. ICal it.

        1. THE SAME DAY, Fuhrer Drumpf told the Australian Prime Minister they have a better health care system than the US.

          That’s a single-payer, universal coverage system.
          WTF!!!?

  3. Suuuuuuuure. Because the term “advanced manufacturing” always conjures up images of factories full of low wage labor.

Apple already showed its attempt at advanced manufacturing in the USA with the Mac Pro production facility. Aside from the fact they screwed the pooch with a bad hardware design and therefore production rates are only a fraction of plant capacity, how many people are employed at that facility?

    1. The company that actually assembles the Mac Pro, Flextronics, has between 500 and 800 Austin employees. There are some estimates as high as 1300, but that is probably a goal assuming greater production. Apple itself has about 4000 Austin employees.

  4. Just think of the high multiplier effect the reptriation of corpoate earnings currently stashed overseas should they be all repatriated directly into domestic US infrastructure!

Main St. where true jobs are made would rejoice but so would Wall St. who somehow manges to always assert itself into any Socialist jobs program if there’s free money to be made without even lifting a worker’s tool, but by manipulating currency and by profiteering that does not benefit the commons.

    1.
