CNET reviews Apple iPhone SE one year later: ‘Still a nice little speed demon, totally holds its own against newer iPhones’

“One year ago, the iPhone SE arrived just a few months after the iPhone 6S,” Scott Stein writes for CNET. “It was nearly the exact same phone under the hood, just packed into an old iPhone 5S case. Fast processor? Great camera? Longer battery? Check, check and check.”

“But how does it compare to the iPhone 7 Plus I’ve been using daily? I started using this iPhone SE to see for myself,” Stein writes. “Turns out, Apple’s most affordable phone is still a nice little speed demon, and totally holds its own against the larger, newer iPhones, especially when it comes to battery life. You just need to be one of those people who really values a small phone over a large screen to appreciate it.”

“The SE keeps up with iOS 10 very nicely, and feels as fast as most new iPhones,” Stein writes. “The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus have a speed edge, but for most instances no one would notice the difference.”

  1. “… totally holds its own against the larger, newer iPhones…”

Maybe if all you do is phone calls and Facebook, then fine, you may be happy with a 2 year old chip. By that logic, an iPhone 6 is good enough for anything most people do.

However, the A10 Fusion chip in the iPhone 7 is clocked at 2.3 GHz. The A9 Chip in the 6S and 5E phones is clocked at 1.8 Ghz.

Apple’s iPhone 7 release info and Geekbench don’t lie: the iPhone 7 is 35% faster. http://browser.primatelabs.com/ios-benchmarks

Whether you care more about shape or speed is up to you. But MDN, please stop the bullshit articles that essentially claim that last generation A chips are just as fast as the current ones. They are not.

    1. Paul,
How many people you know do serious data processing or hi-end games playing on a 4-inch screen? I don’t know any.

Neither MDN nor CNET is remotely claiming that last generation A chips are just as fast as the current ones. They are saying that hardly anybody who would choose to use an iPhone SE is likely to notice—in their everyday use cases—that it is significantly slower than an iPhone 7.

It is not entirely perception, because the larger, newer screens consume a portion of the gains from the faster processor, but user perception is what really matters for the typical iPhone user.

  2. Love love love the SE.
I just broke it, though I live it very much I don’t know if I want to spend money to replace it with only months to go with a new Apple event and new devices and maybe more options.
I promised I would use it until it broke, and I broke it prematurely. I thought I’d have it up and running for years to come. Did not see that coming. Lol

  3. I love my iPhone SE 64GB, i replaced the 6s which was too big and uncomfortable for me. I missed the size and comfort of the 4S when i got the 6S, but the SE is the best of both worlds, 4s size and 6s power. Also the finger sensor works better on the SE then it did on the 6S
