12+ useful but hard-to-find tips for using Apple’s Pages

“Apple’s iWork apps (Pages, Keynote, Numbers) are now available for free to any Mac or iOS user, so I thought it might be good to document some of the lesser known talents of Apple’s now-free word processor app,” Jonny Evans writes for Computerworld.

“I remember that when I first started using Pages the process of inserting a hyperlink wasn’t that easy to find, so I thought I’d share it here,” Evans writes. “Select the word or words[to which] you want to add a link: On a Mac select the Insert item in the tool bar and choose Link from the dropdown menu; On iOS you will get to the insert link tool via the Paragraph (a reverse P) item from top right of the keyboard. You can also select Link in the contextual menu around the selected text. Insert your link, including http.”

Evans writes, “When creating a list you can change all sorts of settings, but one of my favorite tricks is to change the bullet image to am emojii or an image from my image library…”

    1. Or I could use any other Spreadsheet/Document combo in existence.

Pages/Numbers used to have a really great Merge feature and for some reason they removed it.

  1. Apple seriously needs to rethink their mission if any of its products has hard to find features. They really seem to have lost the plot with user interfaces and useless built in help menus.

    1. Can’t disagree.

They’ve confused easy-of-use with simplification, and almost every program has been simplified into obtuseness.

Many icons have stopped being a symbol for some one thing and have become hieroglyphs. The one I hate most is composed of 3 or 4 horizontal lines, usually with a dot preceding each line along the left side.

  2. His point was that Pages 1.x had mail merge built in. The versions since 5.0 do not.

Apple had aimed the original program at home and office users who wanted a program that combined simplicity of use with advanced page layout features. The replacement program deleted most of the page layout and other professional features in favor of a completely new focus on cross-platform collaboration with iOS and iCloud.

Originally, 5.0 also lacked most of the previous AppleScript compatibility (since that was purely a MacOS feature). They have now restored just enough to make mail merge via a separate utility program possible. Most of the page layout features are still missing.

  3. Can’t use Pages on iOS with my iPad Pro. The auto hyphenation can’t be turned off, only on the desktop version. Try typing a page and the word at the end of the sentence will be cut with a hyphen. Not cool and totally lame. It’s really useless trying to use Pages on iOS. I am forced to use Word.
